    People need to stop treating the franchise tag as some cap space holy grail. Fact is you spend w ton of money and usually piss off and alienate one of your best players. A lot of the contracts Clifg Stein has drawn up lately are basically mini two year franchise tags (where the second year is a savings) with team options.     I think generally the interception complaining tends to be meat balling. The fumbles are not as much. Now, not to say interceptions are unimportant but overall context tends to be thrown out the door. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    I love this kind of stuff. I'd love to see a similar article on the NBA. I want to say I've seen something similar before for the NBA, might even have been a Grantland/Simmons article. I might have to Google it. I know, for example, that you can trace the draft pick the Bulls used on Joakim Noah all the way back Kelvin Ransey, drafted in 1980 and immediately traded to Portland for Ronnie Lester and a 1981 1st round draft pick (the immortal, Al Wood). Hmmm. I know Noah, Taj, and McDermott trace their roots to the Curry trade. I guess Antonio Davis was also sent in the same trade. So Davis to Jalen Rose to Artest to... Pippen(?)... Gets us to 1987.     Unless it's just a case of the coach trying to deflect blame away from his players, our returners have done what Trestman/DeCamillis have wanted. But with this being the case it's really odd to have two failed returners still on the roster. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    They played better in the Vikings game and the actual play calling looked about as good as it had all year (low bar). I'd buy the implementing different looks thing based on the Vikings game, even if there were some clear execution and time management issues that limited the total point output.     Even if you want to account for the high stakes pressure the offense was put in, there seemed to be very little of giving Jay different looks. So either he ignored the calls/opportunities or it wasn't really implemented at all. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Not sure but I'd also expect that if a new pres of football ops is brought in it will be one with a very established record at either the coaching level or executive level. If Phillips has to choose another GM it's likely just him sorting through the endless candidates with "director of" titles and no GM experience. Seems like a toss up as to what he may find. A search for a president would be a smaller field where you can probably even pluck a lateral candidate (similar to a Theo situation). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    I don't know why it should. The team has regressed for quite a while. Maybe the McCaskey's will see the ridiculously long leash that Epstein got and knowing their cash flow isn't a problem they will feel comfortable with the status quo. But that is just further delaying the inevitable. I want an overhaul. Just curious, does your overhaul stop at Emery? If you're decided to can Emery the ax needs to cut a little deeper still. I would dump Phillips but do not think that is necessarily necessary for football improvement purposes. While Phillips obviously doesn't make football decisions he has to hire someone who does, in a field where the candidates have way less publically available information and which he really doesn't seem to be tuned into the insider circle. I'd be very nervous that Phillips next GM is worse than Emery. More so than being worried that Emery's next coach being worse than Trestman. Also raw's stability argument holds more weight at the GM level IMO. (And obviously even more at Pres/ownership level but again that's really the only true fresh slate).     In order of preference I'd rather have: Emery hire a new coach and pick the next QB Trestman hire a new DC and groom the next QB Phillips hire a new GM. If the ax can go up to Phillips (or he can at least be reallocated) I would welcome the full overhaul and put that first on my list. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    I don't think any smart fan is ready to walk away from Cutler within the next two years but believe one more new system shouldn't impact those two years much. If you do keep Trestman and we fail to improve again then you're definitely in an awkward one year dead period with Cutler and probably a lot of the offense. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    I can see the thought process. You're basically going to take a roll of the dice on a DC and STC and try and get Trestman to basically be a good OC again, when the alternative is a roll of the dice on a complete revamp. And if it doesn't work out, there probably isn't too much long term damage done and probably a cleaner break in regards to player personnel. It definitely ties Emery to Trestman much more. If he fires Trestman this year he definitely gets to make another HC pick. It's a lot less likely if he goes ahead and the team doesn't get better. I'm not going to be shocked or upset either way re: Trestman. No change to D or ST would be the real shocker. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    I question how good a D coordinator we can even get. It's a risky proposition for a coach coming into what could be a one year job. You're likely taking a chance on someone with less than top notch credentials. Unlike the HC job which would probably be highly sought after, the DC job isn't as enticing, even relative to it obviously being a lesser position. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
