  1. Once in a while, I regret my decision to skip law school (and its expense) and work for the family business. Now is not one of them.
  2. Yep. It's 16 games. Four plays can literally be the difference between 6-10 or 10-6, particularly when a team is just mediocre enough to keep most games close.
  3. it is a rare thing for me, and even then i'm sick of it before the end of the meal.
  4. it means exactly what i meant by it no it's not like football positions are baseball positions and everybody's ability to hit can be measured individually. Middle linebackers do not impact the game the same way many other positions do. Same is true of QBs, tight ends and guards. It's an upgrade, but it's an upgrade that provides stability more than anything. It's good, but not a game changing situation. none of these words mean things. stability? it's a tangible upgrade and that will be noticed in yards and, subsequently, points allowed and subsequently in wins. it may be less of an upgrade than going form worst qb in the league to best, but it is a significant one, either way. you had two dudes who didn't know which direction to run and now you have two of the best in the league and you're telling me that's not going to noticeably impact how well we keep other teams from gaining yards?
  5. there's a lot at stake here [tweet] [/tweet]
  6. Year one of Tresty, with the shortened Martz year being number 2, at least on a per game basis. Yeah the 2 years with Martz were pretty good considering his receivers during those years were Johnny Knox, Devin Hester, Earl Bennett, Rashied Davis, Devin Aromashodu, Roy Williams and Dane Sanzenbacher (he did have Greg Olsen in 2010) In fact I never would have believed that Jay's career arc went the way it did if you told me during the 4th quarter of that chargers game in 2011. That was his career peak, one year removed from a 11-5 division title and NFC title game appearance, bounced back from a 2-3 start to win 5 in a row and considered one of the legit contenders in the NFC. Then he broke his damn thumb chasing down a DB who intercepted a pass that shouldn't have been intercepted (I believe it bounced off his [expletive] WR target and held up in the air long enough for someone to grab it) and it all went downhill from there. if only knox had had his back broken a few weeks earlier jk that was a terrible injury and i feel bad for saying that
  7. do you know what anecdotal means? it means exactly what i meant by it
  8. I don't care what position it is (barring K/P), if you go from clearly worst in the league to one of the best tandems in the league, that's a huge swing and that's going to have a noticeable impact. you should care middle linebacker isn't defensive end. They aren't difference makers. that's anecdotal narrow-minded nonsense. they are when you go from worst in the league to top tier.

  10. Yeah. I expected the defense to be much improved. The McPhee situation is a major setback though. He was one of the best pass rushers in the league.
  11. yes, but they were competitive. You're still putting too much stock into that. "Almost won" is just the other side of the same coin as "almost lost." It's not like this is a significantly younger team with a bunch of potential; it's still mostly a collection of spare parts, older players and some scattered younger players they're praying can pan out and/or stay healthy. I agree it's a better team, but at best they've likely gone from bad to OK if enough people stay healthy. i'd say it's more accurate to say it's the older players that are scattered. a few older guys on offense but the defense is very young.
  12. i think too much was made about the floyd comments, after having seen him saying it and the overall context. just seems like he was making excuses ahead of time for why floyd was going to be used situationally early on (which i think most of us expected to be the case, anyway). hopefully this white injury doesn't end up amounting to anything.
  13. the rizzo style beef at buona beef is definitely worth trying
  14. You are very good at not paying attention to things and commenting on them, lol. I don't think it's because Roberts is doing a magnificent job, or anything, but the Dodgers have been very good despite a lot of major injuries (TT likes to point out that this should've been seen coming when the Dodgers decided to have 15 starters with health concerns). But then the criteria for the award becomes "did better than he should have due to X factors," which penalizes someone like Maddon because "well he had the best team on paper so whatever". It's a silly award whose criteria changes year to year That was never the argument and that's totally a given.
  15. Roberts took a team that went 92-70 (.568 win pct) and has turned them into what is so far a 79-60 team (.568 win pct). Yay? Well yeah, but you're not comparing apples to apples there when you consider they've gotten where the are now without Kershaw for 2 months. Not to mention all the other pitcher's arms falling off. I'm with david, Maddon got it last year and Roberts has done a good enough job that I'd have no issue with it. Baker can DIAF though. Meanwhile, Dusty is doing his usual best to explode his newly signed ace's arm.
  16. I don't have near as much a problem with Roberts winning it as I do with Dusty, who is already working his usual magic in Washington. 19. Before. All of those types of awards in every sport (maybe hockey does weird stuff that I don't know about but who cares) are voted for before the playoffs. They're regular season awards.
  20. And there it is [tweet] [/tweet]
  21. The Cardinals seek out pond scum to fill out their roster, but occasionally an OK guy is acquired by mistake. Just like sometimes their pond scum leaks onto other good guy rosters like ours. wong is still pond scum, let's not get crazy here jesus christ. i must be hungover or something. i was transcribing wong and pham in my head the whole time. tommy pham is cool with me. especially after actually watching that clip.

  23. They'd have Wainwright. They should send out Martinez. That's kinda what I was thinking. If they lucked into a win, it would be annoying to face their actual best pitcher in game 1. Also I'm shocked that Wainwright hasn't sucked out loud as much as I thought.
  24. who would the cardinals throw in the wild card game, assuming they would clinch it early enough to have their pick of their 5?
