The slippery slope argument is a non-starter because no one is as bad at anything in baseball as pitchers are as hitters. Even playing late-career David Ortiz in center field isn't as bad relative to league average as pitchers are at the plate*. My personal preference is for NL baseball because I'm willing to sacrifice ~2 PA per team to get the increased strategy in the later innings, but I'd rather have both leagues be the same(even if they both have the DH) than the split that we have now. *This might be an exaggeration but I'm too busy/lazy to look it up. -

The big benefit from the 8 team divisions in the proposed schedule is that it takes a big bite out of travel costs. You could do eight 4 team divisions and weight the schedule with games from your division and a sister division for the same result, and the main benefit is about a playoff structure that is less desired(8 teams) or can also be replicated with 4 divisions. Unless we're switching to buses I think everybody touting He travel cost thing is making stuff up. You are still getting in a plane every 3-9 days. You are still staying in expensive hotels. I admittedly haven't done the math, but considering that thought seems to be coming from the direction of MLB/owners, who have the most to lose if that's wrong, and that the difference is really only considered in the context of making up the difference in 3 home games of revenue, I believe it. -

If you absolutely have to do best of 3 I think that's a good option to get closer to the one game atmosphere, but you don't need to do it at all. Just do the single game elimination. -

This might be anti-big-man bias, but I'm struggling to see a best case scenario for Bamba where he's better than the 3rd best player on a championship caliber team. Like Spongeworthy, when you get the chance to draft this high I think you need to spend it on a guy who could be Option A or B on a title contender, even if you fail miserably in the process. The exception to this is if you're lucky enough to already have that A & B and have the pick via trade, but even Boston and Cleveland would probably be best served by that approach.

I haven't watched as much soccer as some others, but to me that seems like an extreme fluke. Some of the announcers/studio guys were saying that you need to wait for the game to calm down to wave the guy on, but when he did it Poland had a guy waiting for the ball to come down unopposed with his back to goal. the fact that he played it to another teammate who first-timed that looping ball into no man's land seems like something you just shrug your shoulders about. The ref wants to get back to 11 v 11 and the play certainly wasn't goal dangerous for Senegal at the time, but I also don't fault the Poland player for trying to play that ball all the way back because he probably didn't see the guy get waved on and he wasn't in the field of vision.

Yes, they're favored to win this group, and they could give a good game to their likely first knockout opponent(England or Belgium). They made it to the quarterfinals in 2014 and lost close to Brazil.

Gyorko is 26th best fielder at any position in all of baseball according to Fangraphs DEF 8th best 3B defensively. Carpenter has a better DEF than Bryant. But yeah, beer league, whatever, etc. Facts suck.

Sure those teams are only a handful of games better than the Cubs over less than half a season and they play in a league where more than half of the teams are not making any effort at being competitive whatsoever and the NL is currently winning more interleague games despite the inherent disadvantage they have in AL parks but hey who can fathom a 7 game series not going their way?
