  1. I have great faith that the FO will be able to patch together a good enough rotation to support what should be a dominating offense for a long time. I do too but there's nothing in the pipeline beyond trading/FA. I wouldn't say nothing. I also wouldn't say our next great pitcher is definitely in the system. But De La Cruz, Cease and Albertos are all varying amounts of interesting, though there is obviously great amounts of uncertainty with each of them. Assuming they actually found a mechanical adjustment for Matusz, I'm very curious to see what he can do. Maybe Otani will get posted. :beg:
  2. I think they have much longer than a 2 year window (they will need to find a couple new starters in the next couple years, that can be accomplished with money and other trades pretty easily) They will have lost Deliverance and Hammel, Lester will be declining as Arrieta likely will be as well with Kyle in his prime. They'll likely need a top 15 WAR starter at that point, which would create another window. I have great faith that the FO will be able to patch together a good enough rotation to support what should be a dominating offense for a long time.
  3. hahahahahahahahahaha your friend may be a perfectly decent person. But I hope I never have to talk baseball with him (or her).
  4. These last years would have been hell if Chicago had gotten them. But I'd be trilled to have all the infrastructure improvements going forward.
  5. thank you, that's the guy I was thinking of earlier. I was still scouring the Brewers roster, forgetting he's the one who helped kill Schwarber Hate that guy.
  6. Yeah, I'm pretty much at the point where I'm going to just focus on being excited about the improvement to this year's team instead of focusing on the cost. Like I said earlier, I'm going to combine the moves for Matusz, Montgomery and Chapman in my mind to spread the cost across all those guys.
  7. And Chapman isn't just a good (or even great) relief pitcher. If he is not #1, he is one of the most dominating relief pitchers in baseball history. He is a weapon at the end of games. He's proven he can go either multiple innings or multiple days in a row without losing his stuff. He's a difference maker. He's also an ass, but that's a different subject that's been beaten to death already.
  8. Pretty sure Contreras and Almora have graduated. I can't remember who got called up first but I remember reading that Almora graduated right before going back down. Almora has fewer games and plate appearances than Joey Gallo, who was on prospect lists going into this season and has only one MLB PA this year. Contreras is still below the threshold for rookie status (which I think is enough to make him qualify as a "prospect" but I'm not positive if the criteria differs at all), though he won't be for long. It is the days for Almora. I'm going to update the NSB ranking page after the deadline and ask people to update their lists (or enter one for the first time).
  9. I'm going to try really hard to convince myself that it is a 5-3 deal where we get Chapman, Montgomery and Matusz in return.
  10. Call me crazy, but I kind of hope we're getting Chad Green in addition to Chapman.
  11. Assuming this happens, the depth chart at RP starts to get a little crazy: Chapman Rondon Strop Edwards Montgomery Wood Grimm Cahill Nathan Matusz Patton
  12. My opinion of Warren has decreased from where I had it to begin the year and my opinion of Jeimer has increased (even though he is not yet ready for MLB). But I won't lose sleep over either of those guys in this trade.
  13. They could think that one portion of the game influences the odds more than others and still believe it is a crap shoot overall. Or that improving their odds by some margin in this year's crapshoot weighs more heavily than the future value of whatever prospects they are giving up. There are other variants out there that would allow for both the belief that the playoffs are a crapshoot and that the deal makes sense. This is what I would have believed last year. But I thought I finally grasped that it's all a crapshoot and it doesn't matter who you add. Like people here have said you could add Chapman, Miller and Jose Fernandez and still have an 80 percent chance of losing. Oh well. I'll admit I'm an idiot. I'll be happy landing Chapman and not worry about it. As someone else said, it might only move the needle by 2%. But the front office may feel that the future value Torres is worth less than that 2% for a variety of reasons.
  14. case by case basis. this would help solve a glaring weakness, this isn't going from castro to russell and expecting it to win you a short series. but......If you subscribe to the theory of crapshoot, there aren't case by case basis. If you take each one case by case you don't really believe in the theory. Or am I wrong? They could think that one portion of the game influences the odds more than others and still believe it is a crap shoot overall. Or that improving their odds by some margin in this year's crapshoot weighs more heavily than the future value of whatever prospects they are giving up. There are other variants out there that would allow for both the belief that the playoffs are a crapshoot and that the deal makes sense.
  15. I saw the results, how did the pitches look?
  16. Ben Zobrist might be back from the dead. Well, that would be a good thing.
  17. Does baseball have a mercy rule? If so, I want to see it applied in all four games.
  18. She could have been talking to one source, then heard from the same source as Sharma. Hard to know.
  19. So...Just got back from vacation. Did I miss anything while gone?
  20. Not as bad as his Grandmother [tweet] [/tweet] that's pretty sad I know, look at that attendance.
  21. Iirc, they were also breathtakingly lucky with ph home runs in high leverage situations early in the year.
  22. Interesting but seems against Theo's MO to trade young cost controlled talent for 2 rentals, even if they are looking to move Jorge. The best way to make a deal in your favor is to go against the conventional wisdom of what you like to do. Did you get that from Trump's book? Because it doesn't make much sense.
  23. I mean, I get the desire for another left handed bat. But unless Contreras will be catching nearly full time, I will not be happy about the move. How about 3/5 Montero most of Arrieta's and Ross for Lester obv. Reddick has been a very good hitter the last two seasons. Meh, as always, it would depend on what we have to give up to get him. If it is a small package, then the more talent the better.
  24. Because megathreads suck.
