  1. NY Mets back in the news again. Iriki gets 50 games for performance enhancers. First player charged under new penalties. Story We need to stay away from the Mets. First Hernandez, then the incident in Pawtucket, and now this.
  2. The Pierre-o-Meter finishes at: .264/.299. The 2 runs now put him on a pace for 131 this year, which would tie him for 19th best single season as a Cub. More day games and more heat = more effective Juan Pierre. His career numbers say so at least.
  3. The Jacque-O-Meter now stands at: .231/.283 after going 3 for 4 and being a triple short of the cycle. Thats quite a way to add 43 pts to your batting average in 1 game.
  4. Sigh. Both of his RBIs with the Orioles up 5-2....the more things change, the more they stay the same.
  5. sadly, yes. I blame it on big oil.
  6. You are right Rocket. Allen has only been convicted (felony wise) for the racial fight that almost got him kicked out of school after he took a chair to a girls head. He was also charged with trying to kill his cousin and his roomate with a gun during a domestic arguement. I am sorry, he really isnt violent. *rolls eyes*
  7. Or Alan Iverson/Ron Artest. I say ban him for life. (and ban AI and Artest for life too).
  8. Inconceivable!
  9. Lifetime .299/.350 in April. PreAll Star .275/.321 My whole thing is that he should be given time to make an adjustment. Switching leagues isnt so easy (ask Mr Renteria). But we have a whole list of people who want to crucify him. I thought we were better than Red Sox fans, but was apparently wrong. I just hope he turns it around soon before it gets into his head.
  10. I think he will get a nice summer vacation out of it. Durham, N.C. has struck yet again. Are they opening Oblivion gates down there or something?
  11. Bynum is also left handed. I was surprised that Restovich was not starting out in right today. However, Dusty has a history of letting guys hit out of their slumps, which also is one of the reasons ARam hasnt had a day off in a while. The other thing is that tomorrow is an off day and going 2 days without hitting may not be the best thing either.
  12. I know who they are now though.
  13. 2 out of the playoffs with 142 to play. Houston and Louis both have had a ton of home games. Houston hasnt played but one team with a pulse all season. .600 translates to 97 wins, which is good enough for the playoffs. All of this with having Lee, Prior, Wood, Miller, and Pagan on the DL. And without a CF, RF, 3b, reserve C, Gold Glove Reserve first off of the bench, and 2 rookies on the field. Not too shabby guys.
  14. Slugging % is overrated. Give me 100+ RBIs a year, and we are good. He is on a pace for 122 RBIs this season.
  15. Murton is turning into one of the best clutch hitters in the game. he is turning into absolute money and i for one have been pleasantly shocked by his performance this year.
  16. Really? Jones hasnt had a .350 OBP since 2002, and has only accomplished it 3 times in 11 years. Edmonds numbers are declining. You can almost see the bell curve when you look at his numbers. With his early injuries and a .385 OBP last season, I dont think he will make it this year. I am not a fan of OPS so I am not going there.
  17. Get ready for disappointment. Guess how many qualified CFs in MLB have these stats? 3- Vernon Wells, Curtis Granderson, and Corey Sullivan. ESPN Players such as Andruw Jones, Torii Hunter, Jim Edmonds, and Johnny Damon all suck according to your standards. Hmmm...realistic standards?
  18. It's a little early to project stats out toa full season, though I'm sure he'll come close to the modern era stolen base mark. Oh hell no. You cant have it both ways. Either the sample size is too small (in which case everyone needs to shut up) or the projections are legit. Dont play both sides of the fence, it is uncool.
  19. Pierre's spot is +36 in projected runs (119 in 2006 vs. 83 in 2005) and he is on a pace to finish 2nd in the Modern Era for Cubs in SBs (Chance had 67 in 1903, Pierre is on a pace for 60). Oh noes!
  20. Day hasnt been the same since he hurt his arm and got busted for fixing the baseball. Hate to say it, but i think you can stick a fork in him.
  21. i think that a lot of the problem right now is the realistic fact that the Reds, Cards, Brewers, and Astros are all playing really well right now. The pressure that is being exerted by Cub fans is because there are 3 teams playing well over .600 in our own division. The perceived threat is that they may run off and leave us. That is what is driving this notion to win. Whether or not this can continue is a matter of opinion, but with the East and West so weak this year, it may be a realistic possibility. I can tell you the way things are going that 2 teams are going to qualify for the playoffs from this division- i just hope that we have enough to take out the Astros or Cards, and that the Reds and Brewers will fade per usual because of weak pitching and defense.
  22. This brings up a question I have .... In a game earlier this season, I can't remember the exact one ... Pierre led off the game bunting for a single. Walker makes a quick out without advancing Pierre. DLee comes up to bat and quickly gets behind 1-2 in the count. The pitcher starts throwing over to first every other pitch to hold Pierre on, knowing that Pierre is expecting a breaking ball on a 1-2 count. Result? DLee comes back from a 1-2 count for a walk, with the pitcher obviously distracted by Pierre. The result of the walk leaves Pierre at 2nd, Lee at 1st with Barret up (Aram was out) with 1 out .... Pierre steals third the very next pitch off a great jump (which advances Lee to 2nd), and the catcher makes an errant, rushed throw to third. As the ball trickles into the outfield, Pierre easily trots in home and Lee advances to 3rd with 1 out. Lee later scored on a lazy Barret sac fly. In essence, Pierre "manufactured" TWO runs in that inning ... both his and Lee's. I would like to know if there is a stat out there that would accredit Pierre in any way for Lee's. If not, then there really is a lot of weight to the fact that our current stats do not entirely take into account or reflect the impact of speed on the game. I totally agree with this post, and the earlier liink doesn't take this scenario into account because Lee's BB isnt an official AB. Therefore it doesnt count his run. I am just not buying the kool-aid Saber is selling in this dept.
  23. That was a heck of a relay throw by Perez after Mabry screwed up in the OF. Meachem understands the power of the Neifury and held that runner, or he would have been a dead duck. The Niefury is so frightening that not even the number 13 scares him.
  24. Like I have said before, you cant adequately hope to understand the power of the Neifury, being a mere mortal and all. I will try to explain a little....the Neifury hustles. The Neifury is versatile. The Neifury is quick. The Neifury has a Gold Glove and can play SS better than most other mere mortals. The Neifury puts the ball in play and does not like to walk. The Neifury will sneak up on you when you least expect it and kill you before you know he is even there. The Neifury also spreads his message to the younger ones (like when Cedeno skipped the ball to the plate the other nite and cost us a run) so that one day they too will be able to revel in the power of the Neifury. And he does all of this while quietly spending most of his time on the bench, waiting for his occasional start. We should be so fortunate to know the true awsomeness of the Neifury.
  25. you are right, i am not buying that study. there are too many variables that study doesnt take into account. things like rookies/veteran status, lefty/righty matchups, the way the pitcher throws, and how hard he throws...just a ton of things that you cant quantify. For instance, Mr Vargas from the Fish is 0 for 15 lifetime in giving up stolen bases. You cant honestly tell me that having a Pierre or Jones or Perez or Lee standing on 1st base jumping around and threatening to steal doesnt have an effect on his head. It not only changes the way he delivers the pitch, but may change the pitch as well. Instead of throwing a guy a breaking pitch, he might start him off with a fastball- which may in fact result in a hit. Just ask Tim Hudson how he feels about giving up SBs tonight after the Lee fiasco in Beerland cost him the game.
