    what a crap post from a sad little man. barrett has missed games in the past due to a shoulder injury, I would assume this is the same shoulder. if he plays hurt and doesn't produce he's a bum, but if he doesn't play because he's hurt then he's a wimp. if he admits it's been bothering him but he feels better now, then he's a "coward" fans suck.

    every pitcher has to do what best suits their stuff...that said, the nibbler types don't seem to do as well in the postseason, when everyone is honed in on every pitch and every at-bat. in that situation you'll need to be able to beat someone instead of just coax or trick them into beating themselves.

    I don't think the Cubs are following their manager anymore. Whether deserved or not, he's lost the team's ear. It will be a long, painful second half unless the makeup of the team is changed or the manager is replaced. The good news is that the All-Star break is the best time to do these things.

    were not talking about george bell on the 91 cubs...and you can't compare lee to richie sexson on the brewers a couple years ago either... DERREK LEE COULD WIN THE TRIPLE CROWN THIS YEAR. apparently some of us have forgotten, which is understandable considering the team's inconsistent play. but my god, it's not like he's just an all-star or something. he's the best hitter in the entire league, and a gold glover on top of that! it's true that lee is unlikely to ever hit this well again, but do you want to take that chance? the risk of trading him is that he continues to hit like pujols for the next 4 years or so...and again, for what? a few AA players who, if everything works out perfectly, could result in one, *maybe* two all-star players in 6 years? the odds of that happening are probably less than lee continuing to be a dominant offensive player. the risk-reward analysis fails to justify any trade involving lee.

    the white sox and the local media are very much enjoying the reversal of fortunes this year, that is certain. I don't really dislike the white sox, I hate when the Cubs lose to them but I don't think about the sox otherwise. the white sox have the inferiority complex, and they've got good reasons for it. (media coverage, attendance, treatment from the city etc) the cardinals...yeah, I hate them all the time.

    Why is Grady Little the fab choice here? I can't think of a single reason why he'd be preferable to anyone...his team won the WS immediately after firing him, and I don't think I even have to mention what happened with Pedro Martinez in that ALCS. You want him in charge? Really? Why?

    you don't blow up a team that has mark prior, carlos zambrano and aramis ramirez on it. trading lee for prospects signals to everyone that you've given up, which means you'll have no shot at signing any top FAs for the next couple years, and you probably won't be able to retain prior/zambrano/whomever when their contracts run out...and for what? for the hope that in three years one or two of these prospects might be half as good as lee is right now? it's a stupid move any way you slice it. this is not tampa bay.

    ben grieve needs to go to the AL where he can rot on the bench, in the NL roster spots are too important to give to a guy who has 2 outcomes: called 3rd strike or base on balls. remember warren newsom? ben grieve's like him, but not as good.

    in a video game or ootp, trading lee is a smart move. in reality, it would simply be a catastrophe. you think team morale is bad now? go trade lee for a band of AA players and see how that goes over...as for the fans, even cub fans have limits. the tribune has been trying to fight the cheapskate label the last couple years by raising payroll, a move like this would submarine these efforts forever.

    I don't like morgan at all. that said, that article was so pretentious and smugly ostentatious that I don't blame morgan for getting angry. the writer sounds like a jerk, and he cleverly left all of morgan's out-of-context quotes in but didn't quote himself at all. cheap journalism, but he's preaching to the blog choir so it won't really matter.

    it's a .500 team, that's why they will win 6 in a row and then lose 5 straight. as far as the lineup thing, perez is hitting about .430 or something lifetime against smoltz. macias is 1-3 lifetime. with lee hurt, the lineup is pretty messed up. I think it's foolish to indict a manager based on a single lineup that is clearly not an everyday one. it's not like he slotted the pitcher in the #8 spot...

    ultimately, baseball managers have very little impact on the game. all of their decisions are reactive ones, unlike in basketball, football or soccer where strategies are implemented that change how the game is played. firing dusty baker will not make the cubs a better team. it will, however, provide a sense of relief and hope. the cubs are nearing the point where this will be reason enough to change leadership. I don't anticipate a new manager being any more successful than baker, however. ...UNLESS MIKE MADDUX IS THE PITCHING COACH!!!

    the point is that it makes no sense to compare morris to maddux. no one is touting maddux here. however, there are separate threads here boasting of the accomplishments of: - matt morris - mark mulder - chris carpenter I probably am missing the love-threads for suppan and marquis, but I'm sure after they throw a good game some cards fan will bump them. It'd be nice if the cardinal fans could just have a "STARTING PITCHER!!!1" thread and consolidate all of this.

    Durham is still adequate at the plate, but he has lost a few steps and the Giants are not comfortable with him at second base...I don't imagine he could cover much ground in center field either. so...NO.

    bright spots to the 2005 season: - no sammy - no chip - no alou - derrek lee is the best player in baseball - burnitz proves to be a very patient hitter, if not a powerful one - aramis ramirez is locked up, and he's very very good - ron santo is (relatively) well

    the red sox would never, ever do that trade. I don't think they'd trade either of those guys, let alone both, let alone for a pair like dempster and mitre.

    I'm not sure a lot of you watch the games...I know that as soon as Stone quit there was a knee-jerk reaction here that the new guy would be Dusty's boy or something...Brenly never had a chance because of the preconceptions here that he would always praise Baker. To be honest, I've never heard him go out of his way to praise Dusty. Just because he isn't sniping the way Stone did doesn't mean he's a lapdog. Get some perspective.

    I think Amuary's career is the future of Juan Cruz. Lotta talent, no command, erstwhile journeyman. Just good enough to warrant a chance, but never good enough to stick.
