As sulley pointed out, there are many ways to define success/failure. Consider this...... after 65 years of hardcore suckitude, the CUBS still have the 5th best overall record among MLB franchises. Meanwhile, the Phillies, who waited 97 years for their first WS title (I know, not quite as long as we've waited.) have the 27th best record, have lost more games than any sports franchise on the planet, and are ahead of only 3 expansion teams. Point taken. That team started out 34-19 and looked like they were going to steamroll everything in their path. Then Rick Sutcliffe went down with an injury, and one by one, every one of our starters did a stint on the DL. There's no question that it was a miserable season. It was terribly disappointing and bewildering. But I doubt that many CUBS fans would say they were embarrassed to be CUBS fans in 1985, which was the point that the original poster was making about this year. Second point taken. 1985 was so disappointing because of the great discrepancy between the results and our expectations. The records alone don't just don't describe how we feel about our team, but I have yet to find a way to quantify our expectations. A 60 degree sunny day in early March in Chicago feels warm and wonderful and has us thinking about summer time. The same day in early September will feel a little chilly. Our expectations are formulated, at least in part, by recent results.

Sixty Five (65) baseball seasons have come and gone since the CUBS last appeared in the World Series. Over that span of time the CUBS have won a hair more than 47% of their games. Now, I'm certainly not suggesting that this is good or acceptable for a major market franchise, in fact, it is the worst record of any of the 16 original franchises. The nearest competitor for worst record is Pittsburgh at 47.9%, and they had 10 playoff appearances and 3 World Series wins during that span !!! I'm only pointing out that this 47% figure is the average of what has clearly been the worst period in franchise history. The 2010 season, 75-87 0.463, is pretty close to that average. Or, to put it another way, out of the 65 seasons in this span, the CUBS have put up a record 75-87 (0.463) three different times, and have had 37 seasons with a better record (including their 6 playoff appearances) and 26 seasons with a worse record.
