Currently, it's 70 degrees here in Atlanta, overcast, and it's been raining off and on all morning. It's not raining at the moment, so it's one more cup of coffee, and we're off to Turner Field. Fortunately, our seats are about 8 rows behind the overhang of the upper deck, so we'll stay dry come what may. Go CUBS !!

Agreed. I couldn't have put it any better myself. :D Now there are a couple of truly objective opinions !!

Sure it does. July 5th runners vs the braves runners on 1-3, 1 out Dusty pinch hints jose who ends up striking out. I understand that this is just one example but pinch hitting jose macis in any sittuation with hariston, Dubois, Cedeno, barret hell even zambrano on the bench is simply bad managing. Just a minor point..... Hairston was already in the game at that time.

I would say, if you think keeping Dusty Baker is the answer, you're twice as delusional. Replacing Dusty is one of many answers. He's the wrong manager for the wrong team. I said it before he was hired and I haven't seen anything resembling evidence to the contrary. Goony, I've restored the complete text of my original post. If you think that I'm advocating keeping Dusty Baker.... please quote my post again and highlight where I said, implied, or even infered that we should keep Baker. The thesis of the original post, and the title of this thread, is that firing Baker is the answer. I am merely trying to point out that when you replace Baker with [fill in the name of the world's best baseball manager here], the 2005 Chicago Cubs are NOT a contender. Now, if you really think I'm delusional..... then simply tell me what manager can take this team to the playoffs, and I will gladly retract all.

Dusty is neither a good manager nor a bad one. He is quite average. You could do better, you could also do much worse. And, believe me, the CUBS have done much worse over the years. Frank Luchessi, Preston Gomez, Charlie Metro...... there's no point in going on. If you think that replacing Dusty Baker is the answer, you're quite delusional. Even the ghost of John McGraw couldn't make chicken salad out of chicken s**t !!!

It'd take something special to pick Dusty off in the dug-out with a foul ball. Is it too much to hope Corey could do it and redeem himself? Dusty got hit by a foul ball last year. hit by Jose Macias, no less. Yet he still plays Macias. I don't get it. Macias has started exactly 5 games out of 82 this year. Compare that to the amount of playing time he got last year.

"We got'um right where we want them!"

Point of information....... team OBP CUBS .324 Mets .322 Astros .316 The hell of it is..... we've dropped from .333 (approx league average) to .324 in the last 3 weeks. Thank you. Carry on. -
I personally don't ever want Blanco to play. Every time I hear his name, I hear Slim Whitman singing "Una Paloma Blanca" for some reason. Hey... I'm no music critic, but with these numbers I might just rethink my taste in music........... CUBS are 27-33 when Barrett catches, 13-8 when Blanco starts.

Caray on the difference between the Cubs and Braves.
Fred Hornkohl replied to scs_paradise's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
The Boston/Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves are a very interesting franchise and a study in contrasts. The Braves, along with the CUBS, are the only two teams to compete each and every season since 1876. (That's the same season that the Indians beat the Custer's out in Montana). From 1876 through 1900, the Boston Braves were the best team in professional baseball. (The CUBS did run a close second.), But in 1901, everything changed. The American League was formed, and suddenly the Braves were challenged for popularity within their own home market. During the next 53 years, the Braves played like horse........ well..... lets just say they were bad. Only the Philadelphia Phillies and the St. Louis Browns had worse records during the period. (Those are 2 great studies in futility in their own right). The only highlight for the Braves during this period was the summer of 1914. Mired in dead last place in late June..... they came back to win the pennant and the World Series that year, their only title in Boston !! Then it was on to Milwaukee, where the Braves won another World Series, and were the second winningest team in the NL during the period. Then Bill Bartholomay decided he wasn't making enough money in Milwaukee, and uprooted the team for the greener pastures of Atlanta. In their first 24 years in the south, only the Cleveland Indians had worse winning record than the hapless Atlanta Braves. (I'm omitting the expansion teams of the period for this comparison). The turnaround of the Braves in 1991 is well known to all of us. For all their winning over the last 15 years, this franchise is still 41 games under .500 over it's lifetime. Hell, even the CUBS are 9,756 - 9,208 for a 0.5144 winning percentage over that time !! Over the last 3 weeks, this team has gone 7-12 and looked extremely bad doing it. They've scored 3.42 R/G while giving up 5.47 R/G. Over a whole season, this projects out to a record of 60-102. Corey Patterson?
Fred Hornkohl replied to The_Realist's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
Corey has been really painful to watch the last 30 days. I know he's a better hitter than what the numbers show for June, but I'm so frustrated, I just don't know what the answer is. I suspect that describes CUBS management as well. Would you happen to have Jeromy's stats on how he does after the all-star break in his career? No, I just started keeping stats on individual players this year, so I only have '05 in my database. (I was thinking maybe that long off season would be a good time to start working backwards on that.)

Like many of you, I was prepared to hate Burnitz when we signed him. I must admit, though, he has been a very pleasant surprise so far this season. He seems to be streaky, which not at all unusual, and right now he his hot. Look at his OBP the last month !! Let's hope he stays hot for a good long while.
