Although you may be trying to be negative, this is probably true. We could be the worst baseball team ever. That's really overly harsh. Wow. You never cease to amaze me Fred. Ya know, sometimes I even surprise myself ! mhuber92211 asked me if I could find a way to track such things..... and by golly, I figured it out. Ahem...I believe that was me 8) But anyway...have you come up with something terms of strength of the streak, or is it just the Cubs chances after a win or after a loss? Sherwood.... yes, indeed that was you. Forgive me for my "senior moment" there. not sure how you would define the strength of a streak, I'm just taking the CUBS' W/L record after a win, after 2 wins, after 3 wins...... and coversely after a loss, 2 losses...... etc, etc. W L pct after 9 losses 0 0 0.000 after 8 losses 1 0 1.000 after 7 losses 1 1 0.500 after 6 losses 0 2 0.000 after 5 losses 0 2 0.000 after 4 losses 1 2 0.333 after 3 losses 2 3 0.400 after 2 losses 7 5 0.583 after 1 loss 5 12 0.294 First game 1 0 1.000 after 1 win 14 4 0.778 after 2 wins 6 8 0.429 after 3 wins 3 3 0.500 after 4 wins 2 1 0.667 after 5 wins 1 0 1.000 after 6 wins 1 0 1.000 after 7 wins 0 1 0.000 after 8 wins 0 0 0.000 after 9 wins 0 0 0.000 after 10 wins 0 0 0.000

Are the '05 White Sox the '04 Cardinals?
Fred Hornkohl replied to ZMovieman's topic in General Baseball Talk
Oh, I don't know.... they seem pretty offensive to me ! -
Hey. Mizzou..... you could do worse !! I mean, think of it this way.... you're not having to watch Leicester, Dempster, Rusch, Mitre, or Koronka start, right ?? Yeah, I've seen such Cubs legends as Jim Bullinger, Jeremi Gonzalez and Anthony Young pitch live! Maddux is a HOF'er! Ah... the stories I could tell you about Bob Buhl, Larry Jackson, Dick Ellsworth, Cal Koonce, Bill Faul..... oh, never mind. It's not worth the stroll down memory lane.

Baseball 101...Spring Training for the Fan
Fred Hornkohl replied to Coach C's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
thats one of the things that always confuses me- all the (seemingly) random letters. i know some of the more basic ones but others ive forgotten, or never knew. is there like a baseball glossary of some kind online? along with whats quoted above, whats WHIP, LHIP, RHIP or whatever? and anything else you'd like to throw in OPS is slugging plus on base percentage (OBP). I think you calculate OBP by: walks plus hits/PA(plate apperances) OBP = ( H + BB + HBP ) / ( AB + BB + HBP + SF ) SLG = TB / AB TB (total bases) = H + 2b + ( 3b * 2 ) + ( HR * 3 ) OPS = OBP + SLG -

With runners at first, first & second, or first, second & third and 0 or 1 outs, when a batter pops the ball up to the infield or to the outfield where an infielder can easily make the catch facing the infield, the batter is called out automatically. The reason is so that the fielder cannot "accidentily" drop the ball on purpose and then get a double play. The double play could occur because the runners will not be running. So, even if the fielder drops the ball, the batter is still out. The runners can advance at their own risk after the call/catch is made. If any of this is incorrect, please fix it. Thanks. I don't believe the infield fly rule applies when there is only a runner on first, it's when there are runners on 1st & 2nd, or bases loaded. The batter is never out "automatically", it is a judgement call on the part of the umpire as to whether the fielder could have reasonably made the play. -
That was Sat 23 Apr, and you are quite correct. Maddux also pitched very well against the Pirates the weekend before that, Sun 17 Apr, in Pittsburgh, going 6 innings and giving up 2 earned runs. He left the game with a 2-2 tie, and Wuertz picked up the win in relief when the CUBS scored 2 in the 8th to make the final 4-2.
