    I'm curious why Rolen isn't being given time to rest his shoulder. He is to undergo a strength test on his surgically repaired shoulder today. I don't get it. The Cards have a 13 game lead so why not take advantage of it and DL Rolen for 15 days to get him ready for September and, more importantly, October? With their starting pitching they shouldn't collapse (I wish they would) even with Molina, Sanders and Rolen (if they DL him) on the DL. I don't get it.

    I know it took a lot for you to say that;) Sweeping the Stros was a big statement this weekend. I think the last month was a little bit of a mirage for them. They're getting into the meat of thier schedule now and should start to fade. The Nats seem to be the team that the Cubs need to start falling off. I think the Phils are going to start trading off players. The Mets don't scare me. Does anyone really think the D-backs are a playoff team? I think the WC is going to come down to the Cubs and Nats. As a possible NLCS preview, that should make the 14 games we share a lot of fun to watch. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS WEEKEND!!! I actually see the wild-card coming down to the Cubs and Astros. I see the Nationals finally realizing they are the Expos just in a different country. Seriously, they had a good run and some good players, but I see them playing .500 or below from here on out, and I see the Braves with #14 straight. No one else in the NL East concerns me, really. Dontrelle looks like he'll do his typical 2nd half fade. The NL West? Only one team will be playing in October. The Astros just need one or two bats, and for Pettite and Oswalt to remain healthy. I know they were holding their breath on Saturday after Oswalt was hit by the pitch. But it will come down between the Cubs and Astros for the third straight year.

    I hate that Sanders got hurt. He's a good guy. And, yes, if Edmonds was playing a few steps deeper in CF this might not have happened. Let the trash talking begin. It's the Cubs and Cardinals in five days.

    I'm happy where Hill is right now. There is no need to bring him up just to have him pitch maybe 2 or 3 innings a week out of the pen the way the starters have been going deep into games. I trust Hendry on this one. There must be an obvious reason why Hill is still in the minors while Mitre and Novoa are up in the bigs. I still very much dislike a 12 man staff, though.

    Sometimes it's brutal listening to Santo. He's supposed to be the analyst but asks Pat to watch the replay and then Pat has to re-tell what happened.

    Grieve's OBP with the Cubs is almost .500. We couldn't need that for a bench guy. :wall:

    Grieve isn't even thirty yet, but it seems like he's been in the majors for ten years.

    Mike has apparantly tumbled down the depth chart. He was wasted in the first game of that Atlanta doublheader, and he's no longer being used like a setup man. Novoa, who has been either great or awful has somehow gotten the job without showing much. No one seems to want the set-up role. Maybe we'll have to wait for Williamson, I don't know. But Wuertz has turned into the righty version of Glendon Rusch with his WHIP. I don't know why Novoa would be considered the set-up man he hasn't done much better.

    When else is he going to pitch? We have so many relievers that guys need work.

    Good move, taking Wood out. We should try and run five relievers out there today. Just kidding. We don't know which Maddux will show up tomorrow. Man, Pittsburgh seemed to be a competitive team just a few weeks ago. Let's pound them the rest of the weekend. Wuertz walking guys again.

    Nice going, Neifi. I still don't care much for you with a bat. I hope now some people realize that OBP matters up and down the order and not just for the 1-2 hitters.

    It's really hard to give Dusty the benefit of the doubt and assume this is only a blip. I don't think I have to apologize for thinking Dusty will bench Murton and play Hollandsworth far too often. Baker has already said that Murton is going to platoon with Hollandsworth. This is for Murton's own good, says Baker, to protect him from tough RH pitchers and not damage his confidence. Seems to me we've seen this movie enough times now to know how it's going to end. I have no problem with this if, if, IF, IF Holla continues this little hitting streak he's on. But I believe he'll slump again. I know I tend to be an optimist, but I still believe that they'll platoon for the next two weeks (which will coincide with Holla's bad streak) before a deal for an everyday LF is made.

    That might have been a good comparison if we're talking about the April/May Holla. Bernie Williams doesn't have similar numbers over the past two weeks that Holla does. I don't know why people can't forget about Holla's horrible April and May but can't remember Holla's recent hitting/OBP. And I'm not a big Holla fan. How about Hollandsworth terrible June too. I don't give a frog's slimy ass about Hollandsworth's last two weeks. The guy doesn't deserve to be given the starting job. He has proved time and again he does not deserve to start. If that is the case why bring Murton up? Trinidad Hubbard was tearing it up in AAA before being relseased. Or how about Scott McClain? It make no sense to bring up a prospect to have a window seat, none! You're upset because Murton will sit for the second time in the last five games?

    Yeah, well the Mavs are lucky that 8 teams from each conference make the playoffs in the NBA, and not 8 teams in the NBA. I don't think you'd see an improvement with the Cubs with Cuban as an owner. I've never said he's a bad owner, I don't think he's a great owner, either. But he wouldn't be an upgrade from what we have now, and I don't understand why some think he would be the missing link.

    I remember Frey saying that he didn't think Palmeiro would ever develop power numbers, now why he didn't feel the same for Grace I don't know. I wish we could've gotten more for Palmeiro, but I was happy with Grace. Face it, the pitching sucked in the 90's for the Cubs moreso than the offense, in my opinion. Plus, somehow, Larry Himes would've done something stupid and Palmeiro would've left anyway. That's why I laugh at anyone who suggests any kind of curse on the Cubs. The only curse has been bad management making horrible decisions. The decline in the 90's began in 1987 (?) when the Trib made Dallas Green quit by trying to force him to be the field manager and give up the GM job. Idiots.

    This is unwarrented critisicm. He has owned the team for 5 years and you are saying that in order for him to be considered a good owner he must have won a championship in that time? That's absurd. If you read my previous post, it's not a World Championship, but at least make it to the Western Conference Finals - they may have done that once. But my point is what could he do that the Trib hasn't done in the past five years? And I'm an NBA fan, and it's my opinion that the Cubs are closer to a World Championship right now than the Mavericks.

    I apologize for sounding "snippy", but I'm getting the impression that some couldn't name five owners of NBA teams without research, but only know Cuban's name. What would he do to bring the Cubs a World Series title that the Tribuene hasn't done recently?

    Sounds like the Cubs to me. And I don't know your age, but the Mavericks made the playoffs several times back in the '80's with Derek Harper and Rolando Blackman. Yes, they had a period when they stunk, but it's not like that franchise has always been horrible. Again, how close have his teams been to winning the NBA title? I'm more interested in a NL pennant and World Series title. But maybe some are more interested in seeing the owner's face than the end results.

    If the Cardinal pitching continues like its last 5 games (9 ER 43 IP 1.88 ERA) and still winning 60% of the games, it may not matter much. You're right. But I am glad that you no longer play the Royals, D-Rays, Cincy 10 times, and the Rockies 7 times. You can only play the schedule in front of you, but it's nice to see them having a more difficult schedule than the first half. Hey, I'm an eternal optimist.

    And the Dallas Mavericks have done what under Cuban's ownership? Sure they have had some exciting teams, but when they reach the Western Conference Finals let alone the NBA Finals I will give him props. Man, the Trib has given Hendry the top payroll in the NL and future additions to Wrigley Field and they still get dissed.

    Yeah, so does 670 The Score. The Score is also reporting that the Cubs are having a team meeting at noon. Hopefully, everyone gets on the same page and an emphasis is placed on patience at the plate. Is it a team meeting or a players only meeting? I was interested last week in their players only meeting as to who led it. I'm still trying to figure out who the "leader" is. It could be Walker or maybe Lee is the silent leader, I'd be interested in finding out, though.

    I love that Murton is hitting fifth. He should be at the plate with guys on base (Ramirez might get three IBB today) plenty of times today. Hope he takes advantage.

    I think I'd rather have him say that than what could be the real reason --- fans making Wrigley Field the UnFriendly Confines. boo! I was waiting for someone to say that! The thing that makes you wonder what's going on is that the Cubs since the '84 playoffs are playing under .500 ball at Wrigley during the postseason, too.
