  1. If Mike Lowell can pitch out of the pen, I'd love to have him. Otherwise, no thanks.

  3. Molina just isn't a significant loss. Walker being injured is to be expected, and Edmonds hasn't really missed any time. He may play hurt, but not very hurt. Ramirez has played hurt for us for the better part of the last 2 seasons. Sanders kind of hurts, And Rolen being hurt might make up for him playing way above himself last year. As for the Cubs, injuries have hurt a bit this year, but nothing like last year. The 2004 Cubs were good enough to lose 3-4 guys and win the division too, but just not the guys they did lose. In my 20 years of following baseball, I can't remember a team more screwed by injuries as the 2004 Cubs, or a team that seemed as blessed as the 2004 Cards. The bottom line is we're facing you guys this weekend shorthanded. And we haven't been "blessed" this year. We've had injuries and we're still in the same spot we were in this time last year. If you're going to comment on Walker being injured should be expected, the same holds true for your pitchers. Sanders is definitely a loss, our second best power producer this year. And although you discount Molina, you probably wouldn't rather face us all three games with Blanco. The Cubs/Cards schedule this year worked to your definite advantage unlike last year. I give props to the Cards because they're in first place. Yeah, you've got some ouchies, but you've only had a couple of injuries -- I'm talking about guys missing more than a month. Anyway, I wonder how far ahead, or if the Cardinals wouldn't even be ahead if Rolen, Molina and Sanders had started the season hurt and on the DL. A lot of the injury excuse has to do with the timing of them. I think the Cards might have won the World Series with a healthy Carpenter. Timing is important, too.
  4. And, to think, the Cards may have been able to win that game if one of the "most knowledgeable fans in baseball" had interfered with Hall's double. The guy who scored the winning run would've had to go back to third leaving the game tied at 4-4. Now if the Brewers can win the last two. The Cards have had pretty good games against Sheets, though.
  5. I agree with you. For as much as I dislike Perez, defensively, I have little problem with him. There are at least two balls I've seen this series that Perez has gotten to that I don't think even a 100% Nomar would have gotten to. Nomar may have to be a monster with the bat to make up for base hits that will be hit between ss and 3rd or up the middle.
  6. I'll be in downtown St. Louis on Friday and Saturday. This series you may want to stay away from beer at the stadium. Saturday and Sunday could reach 100 degrees with high humidity. Plus, as many of you know, there are a couple of spots you can go to after the game and drink beer where it's air- conditioned. I give this warning because a few years ago I was at Busch on a hot and humid day, but my seats were underneath an overhang and out of the sun so I thought I was pretty safe drinking beer without getting sick. Without going into detail, let's just say I was wrong....very, very wrong.
  7. Backe/Lane/Patton is not that hard to beat. I still find that offer hard to believe.
  8. If you were the Reds' GM, you'd accept Rusch, Mitre and prospect? For all the props Dunn gets here, you all seem to think he's not worth much trading wise. I think the Reds' GM should be smart enough to know if he's trading his cornerstone he should be well compensated for it.
  9. Last night's game is another example of why I hate the Brewers. I sincerely think they always bring their "A" game against the Cubs and drop off a little against everyone else. A blowout for us against the Brewers is when we win by three runs. The Cards have had little trouble with this group. And for some strange reason, Milwaukee seems to play some of its worst defense against the Cardinals, but seem to be gold glovers against the Cubs.
  10. Well, this is the info that our own vance was able to dig up for us: Assuming that is true, it wouldnt be too awful hard to one up that offer. Backe and lane are nothing special. I think Jerome Williams + Jody Gerut/Corey Patterson + Pinto(maybe rich hill) sounds like a decent package. I'd do that in a heartbeat. Not to impune Vance's source, but, I find it hard to believe that the Astros would've been the ones to turn down that trade. Why would the Reds want that deal? In addition, if you were the Reds' GM for a day, you'd really give up a potential cornerstone for Williams (has made ML starts, but wouldn't call him an established starter yet), Patterson (don't know if you can call him established yet) and Pinto, who hasn't thrown in the majors? My guess is Hill would have to replace Pinto or Hill added. Regardless, if the Reds' GM would make that trade I'd bet you could hear fans screaming all the way from Ohio. At minimum, they should ask for an established major league starter (a #3 or #4 starter), two top pitching prospects and maybe a top position prospect. I don't think a GM would trade Dunn for question marks. I still wouldn't mind Cliff Floyd.
  11. Yeah, there's a bunch of those available right now. Market's just glutted with them... Man, you guys need to lighten up. I can't believe after reading my post you'd take me seriously. I'll be sure to put a smiley face on next time when suggesting a five-tool player should be sought. I still don't want Dunn. Who out there is a better option then dunn? And why is it that people think that Dunn is actually "out there?" I think it would be foolish for the Reds to part with him when they could center their team around him. And if the Reds are going to trade Dunn to a division rival, I would think they'd be asking a whole lot for him. We think that he's Out there because the reds have, reportedly, already made an offer to the Astros for him. (that spoils the no central division rivals thing, also). And we never said his price wasnt high, but when you have the chance to get a talent like that, it'd be foolish not to pursue it. Pursue it or do it? If you were the Reds' GM, who would you ask for in exchange?

By the way, I'll go back and say the same thing I said in the off-season, I wouldn't be the least bit upset in getting Cliff Floyd.
  13. Any suggestions? I apologize. I thought the last sentence was too obvious to be taken seriously. I was wrong.

  15. I don't want Dunn, and it has nothing to do with last night's game. Had he gone 3-4, I'd have said the same thing. How about getting another 5-tool player to go with Lee?
  16. We did dicuss it, and i think the general feeling is that the club doesn't think much of Grieve. Gerut and Grieve are very similar, though. BTW, any news on a 25 man move to clear room for Gerut?? One of the papers said either Mitre or Grieve. But I see no reason to keep Grieve around so it'll probably be him. Although he's only had 14 at-bats, I'll gladly keep Grieve and his .500 OBP for the bench.
  17. He's a retread because he was the odd man out in a terrible OF in Cleveland. He's an incredibly dull acquisition who does nothing great. I have no problem trading Dubois, but they needed an impact bat, not another excuse for Dusty to bench the Cubs bench leadoff option on a regular basis. Like many Hendry deals, this isn't a bad deal, but it's terrible redundant and barely helpful, at all. I guess he wanted a second chance to make up for that silly Bay trade. Hopefully they aren't stupid enough to send down a bat after this move. It's pretty clear, they don't need 7 relievers. Sergio needs to go down and get some innings. I'd have much rather seen Dubois added to a package for a more meaningful acquisition. Oh well, I've grown accustomed to pointless moves by the Cubs. We have different definitions for retread. I view a retread as a 31-32+ player who's played for several organizations while on the downside of his career. As I said, I don't think it was a bad deal, and I hope this means Mitre can be sent down for consistent work. This was a deal, in my opinion, that won't hurt the Cubs, might not help them, but could. I'm not sold on the 27-28 year old theory. I generally give a little more room for ceiling, 26-29 years.
  18. I always find it amusing when the Yankees are behind in the standings in April and May and people start questioning the team's age, salaries, Joe Torre, etc. They still might not make the playoffs, but I wish people who always say it's a long season would start practicing what they preach. And the Braves seem ready to take back the NL East. Looks as if the Nationals have realized they are the Expos just in a different country.
  19. It wouldn't surprise me to see he and Hairston platooning in CF.
  20. The Cubs are in game five of a stretch in which they play 34 games in 35 days. Based on past history, it would be a surprise to see them drop to 11 pitchers at this point. Then again, nothing should be a surprise with this organization. Yeah, I had thought about that. But there's no reason to believe with Prior, Wood and Zambrano healthy that they couldn't consistently get you into the seventh and eighth innings. I doubt Greenburg will be back anytime soon, so you could send Mitre down and if you're needing bullpen help (heaven forbid that happens) you bring him back up and send down another pitcher or a position player.
  21. A retread outfielder? Where does that assessment come from? And what makes you think Dubois had high trade value during last offseason? If you were a GM, would you have given up a lot to pry him from the Cubs?
  22. I don't see how this was a bad trade unless you just loved Dubois. As was said a lot last year and this year, Dubois seems like a great DH fit. I especially will like the deal if it means we'll get back to an 11-man pitching staff.
  23. Yea and Perez is a switch hitter +... http://www.harrywalker.com/photos/Baker_Dusty.jpg That dude is our manager. I can tolerate Neifi with a bat if he's batting right-handed. I like the potential of Murton, but he's got to at least start hitting some balls hard.
