  1. I have to sell that. Is not winning a world championship the only criteria? My criteria is this: would you rather be a Detroit Lions fan or a Cub fan? Would you rather be a Cleveland Browns fan or a Cub fan? Would you rather be a Tampa Bay Devil Ray fan or a Cub fan? A Pittsburgh Pirate fan of a Cub fan? A Toronto Raptor fan or a Cub fan? I think one is blowing it way out of proportion to call the Cubs the worst organization in sports history. Or either they've forgotten about the Cub history from 1906-1945. History means existence forever, not just the last three decades. You can't really compare playoff appearances with baseball teams as you can hockey or basketball teams since half of their teams make the playoffs. If baseball invited eight teams from each league to the playoffs, we'd have at least two more playoff appearances just since 2001 (2001 and 2004). By the way, none of us here have been Cub fans for 97 years, so I can only count since 1977 when I became a Cub fan. That's almost thirty years. Many, many professional teams have gone 30+ years without a World Championship.
  2. As I've said before, props to Jones for not letting this affect his play. He could've gone to the media back in April and stated this as the reason why he was struggling. Funny how we've had idiot players in the past go public with their anger toward announcers' comments, but Jones never came forward about the racist comments he's received. Much respect.
  3. I wish there was this much love for Abreu on here two seasons ago when it sounded as if we could've had him for Prior.
  4. I've been sick of the "day games" excuse for almost my whole Cub fan life. To those players who blame failure to reach the playoffs on day games are just not holding themselves, or the teams, accountable. It's bad personnel and a bad organization. Back in the day, before expansion, why did the Dodgers have no problems winning NL West and World Series championships when, outside of SF and SD, all of their roadtrips were at least 2000 miles? I would think that kind of grind would be harder than playing home day games.
  5. Walker swings at ball three and hits into a double play.
  6. Too bad Ramirez didn't pull a Griffey, Jr. and go after the manager in the dugout.
  7. I think if he is going to do it the score won't matter. he'll pick a spot. Good call, Jiggman!
  8. Novoa's inability to get Rolen or Encarnarcion out assures Pujols will bat one more time this game.
  9. I don't care that much for Novoa, but he might not have had to appear if Marmol could've gotten through six or even into the seventh. Our starting pitchers are killing our bullpen. I hope Wuertz doesn't have to be used today because then he'll likely be unavailable tomorrow. And with Maddux going in the heat, he may only get through four or five innings.
  10. Dang. Now that it's a one-run game, LaRussa likely won't retaliate. I know it's sick, but I want to see a brawl.
  11. I don't know why he threw him a breaking pitch. It hung and so did the ball all the way off the wall. I wish he would've stuck with the fastball.
  12. And according to Gameday, Novoa is throwing them right down the middle. ??? Naw. The first one was a called strike over the outside corner, but the second one was down the middle, but looked to have movement.
  13. Great pitch by Novoa to strike out Pujols. He got it right where he had to - in on the hands. Nice job.
  14. well if I were LaRussa I woulda done it. You would've had the double steal on when you're down 3 runs?
  15. Hey, as long as you have electric stuff it doesn't matter if you throw strikes. Or that seems to be what our GM loves.
  16. This is an example of why I think Rothschild stinks. Now, maybe he requested the bullpen get ready at the start of the inning and Baker nixed it, but based off of the fifth inning, why wasn't the bullpen started at the end of the fifth?
  17. The River City Rascals.... When Len brought that team up it reminded me of the time I went to one of their games and saw the best basebrawl I've ever seen. There were two separate brawls with real punches being thrown and real punches connected. It was funny because after it all ended the Johnstown Johnnies' manager was handcuffed and arrested for not leaving the field. He stayed on the field to challenge the Rascals' dugout to another fight. The Rascals are located in suburban St. Louis (St. Charles, MO).
  18. I guess Rolen wasn't lying when he said he doesn't like playing day games.
  19. I think it's pretty stupid to say you can see in their eyes that they want it, and the reason Hill has struggled is becasue he doesn't want it. Nothing but a bunch of predetermined jibberish. I don't have a problem bringing up some player on the Cubs, unless of course there's intent to stir the pot. Yeah, I think it's predetermined jibberish. But my point is there are tons of predetermined jibberish on these boards that aren't policed, so why is it some are and some aren't policed?
  20. Please no need to bring up Patterson. As was the case earlier, only relevant comparisons are allowed. :P See previous posts. Except that Patterson was traded to bring in Pierre. As TT pointed out, Hill and Marmol aren't competing for the same spot. Patterson was traded because he wasn't going to have success in Chicago. I still think people pick and choose when or when they aren't offended by posts based on if "their" guy is being called out. I thought the poster was simply giving his/her observation of why Marmol and Marshall have been more successful than Hill at this point.
  21. Please no need to bring up Patterson. As was the case earlier, only relevant comparisons are allowed. :P See previous posts.
  22. It's one thing to start new discussions about these matters. It's another thing altogether to throw them into a discussion where it has little to no relevance. I think this is clearly a double-standard. It seems as if some people get touchy when "their" guy is criticized but it's open season on guys that some hate. So, when is it relevant to compare a guy? I've already seen where the question of Pagan vs. Murton was brought up. What's the difference between that and Hill vs. Marmol?
  23. That was the real Cubs defense. Not the mirage we saw last night.
  24. My problem is that he has been involved in a number of heated discussions regarding Rich Hill on this board (including one in yesterday's game thread). There's nothing wrong with his opinion, but it's getting to a point where I'm absolutely sick and tired of people stirring the pot just to cause trouble. We've covered Rich Hill's ability/inability to perform as a major leaguer. There is no reason to keep drudging it up again and again to backhandedly bash other posters, prove a point, or just make trouble. There was absolutely no need to bring Rich Hill into the conversation of Marmol's ability. You mean dragging stuff up and up again like the many "why Baker should be fired" threads? Or the many "Neifi sucks" threads?
