  1. Mark Appel is straightening himself out. 2.56 FIP since his promotion while striking out 34 in 34.1 innings. Of course that's also due to an unsustainable .26 HR/9.
  2. Once it starts, that's 8 out of 10. The only team to do 8 out of 10 since the 1990s Braves was the Yankees. That's a ceiling, not a reasonable expectation. From 2004-2013 the Cards have averaged 90 wins and won the division 5 times. I feel like that's a reasonable ceiling for any team in a competitive division. Asking for more than that is wishful thinking. True dynasties are insanely hard to come by, especially when a lot of the competitive advantages teams have exploited in the past are drying up.
  3. Are we? 2003-2008 was pretty good. I don't think it's a slam dunk we beat it. From 03-08 we averaged 84 wins, which looks amazing after these last few craptacular seasons, but really isn't anything special. If that's all we manage from this prolonged rebuild I will be quite disappointed.

  5. Man, he just smokes every single baseball he makes contact with. Castro!!

  7. Don't look now but Almora has a .843 OPS in his last 13 games. Of course that comes with a sparkling 0.0 BB%!

  9. No. The Cubs won 97 games and actually underperformed. They were the best team in baseball pretty easily and the fact that they lost 3 in a row to LA was pretty much a fluke. Although my irrational side is still annoyed that we let Milwaukee surge into the playoffs when we would have faced the free-falling Mets if they hadn't. Pretty much. The Cubs had a +184 run differential. The Red Sox were second at 151, and Philly third at 119. They were absolutely the best team in baseball that year.
  10. From the click-through article on BP, which is short and definitely worth a read:
  11. http://grantland.com/features/mlb-detroit-tigers-oakland-as-rotations/ I think the larger issue here is sample size more than anything.
  12. Not only that, even with no improvement his 4.01 FIP puts him as the 4th best starter currently on the team. We just got a league average, cost controlled starter for peanuts. That's unheard of. I don't know, I bet we'd trade this guy for nothing. I'd be surprised and a little pissed if the team acquiring him paid as little in money and prospects as we're paying.
  13. We have so much freed up money that I can't see us NOT spending on pitching. Dream: Lester/Arrieta/Maeda/Hendricks/Turner I can definitely see the bidding for Lester getting high and the front office drawing their normal line in the sand, but in that case I think they really push on Maeda. Expectations: Arrieta/McCarthy/Maeda/Hendricks/Turner
  14. It's so strange to be interested in most of the lineup. "Whelp, Castro batted, I'll check in in a few innings...oh wait Alcantara is on deck."
  15. Rizzo!!!!! ....errrr I can't believe that didn't go out
  16. Not only that, even with no improvement his 4.01 FIP puts him as the 4th best starter currently on the team. We just got a league average, cost controlled starter for peanuts. That's unheard of.
  17. Minor league LD% or LD% in general? In general. I'll bite. Why not? Obviously LD% + .120 is very 2007, but there's still some useful information there. It has very little year-to-year correlation, i.e. it's mostly variance and not skill. Yes it's absolutely terrible as a predictive stat (year to year correlation of .22) but it still holds some use as a descriptive stat a la BABIP, though after some reading I'll concede that BABIP is probably the better choice in most situations.
  18. just saw that....thanks for providing no details Keith At least we know we've got him. I've spent the past 2 days dreading some weird last minute Dempster-esque twist that leaves us with nothing.
  19. Minorleaguecentral.com, but don't fall into the trap of thinking LD% is worth looking at. Minor league LD% or LD% in general? In general. I'll bite. Why not? Obviously LD% + .120 is very 2007, but there's still some useful information there.
