  1. Welcome to NSBB, Tiger! Glad to have you aboard.
  2. FWIW That's not a very attractive list. I think that is part of the reason why people were upset that Epstein was passing on Fielder (that is until we got Rizzo).
  3. With the amount of money we are saving this year, there is no excuse to not bring Wood back even if it does cost around 3-4 million. Someone can say that we'd be better using that money on IFA or the Cubans, but our payroll is so low right now that 3-4 million is nothing. That being said, there is no way this deal isn't done before spring training. Theo would not have said what he said unless he was 95% sure that he was going to get a deal made.
  4. Big fan of this trade. I liked Cashner a lot. I remember how excited we all were to see him start that game where he was injured. That injury was the first big blow of the 2011 season. Still, it looked like he was going to be put in the bullpen, at least for this year. And I'm extremely excited to get Rizzo. Especially considering a lot of people thought it would take Garza. Great trade.
  5. Yeah, that's what I said. We got another illiterate here. There's a wide gulf between nobody and everybody. But you don't like to hear stuff like that I know. That's how you're acting. There are still several prime targets on the board, but you're accusing the FO of ignoring all FA. They've just passed on the ones you really wanted, so you're having a hissy fit, or so it appears. Main thing I've been getting out of it is that in a pretty strong FA year, where we have money coming off the books, a year where the Yankees and Red Sox aren't spending money, and where the FA's would fill holes that we have (nothing prospect wise either), we haven't done anything. If we get the Cubans and Fielder, there might be a different outlook from some members on the board. But for right now, our team that sucked last year is getting worse day by day. And I don't see it being much better in 2013 unless we pop open the checkbook despite all this amazing young talent we've picked up.
  6. Where is anyone make such a general claim? People have been adament in their stance on the matter, and the movement is growing. Well, they are okay with moves below 10 million. Anything more than that and the price is too high and endangers the future.
  7. Which is a really silly point since nobody was arguing otherwise. Since the Cubs should be one of the wealthiest teams in baseball, it would be nice to assume that they could sign any free agents they want, build from within, and trade players here and there to fit their needs. Crazy talk.
  8. Yes, it's rare for guys like Pujols, Fielder, Wilson and Darvish to all be available to the highest bidder in the same offseason. That was the point of striking while there was a chance, because those guys would fit into this team so well, and there is no guarantee you'll get a better option in 2-3 years. A lack of impact free agents becoming available is hardly an excuse to steer clear of impact free agents when they do become available. I just don't understand this obsession with having the most efficient roster. If Hoyer and his boys are any good at their job they will have plenty of young prospects to exploit on the cheap for several years, you don't have to suck on you way to getting there. You want Pujols contract? Wilson didn't want to sign here - nothing we can so. Darvish I would have liked, but who knows what we actually bid. We may still sign fielder, but I doubt it if it costs what I think it will. Once you miss out on Wilson and esp Darvish, spending for 2012 doesn't make much sense. Who do you see as our 1B in 2013? Or 2014?
  9. The main Miami Marlins board seems okay with the deal. The only mention of a prospect was that we might be getting Ceda in return. No idea how reliable that poster is on there. http://soflamarlins.com/showthread.php?t=4625&page=45
  10. So you fully admit that you're looking for different things from different positions, and yet you're judging a CF solely based upon his bat? Where did I say I was judging solely on his bat? I'm sorry, where did you acknowledge the importance of anything besides OPS+? I didn't realize I needed to make a list of everything important in a player. Let me say it again. Coco Crisp is not a bad player. Coco Crisp is probably not the best way for the A's to be spending their money when they constantly have to trade away their good players since they have no money. If the Cubs had signed Crisp to this same contract I would not have hated it (wouldn't have made any sense if they still had DeJesus and Byrd on the roster, however).
  11. So you fully admit that you're looking for different things from different positions, and yet you're judging a CF solely based upon his bat? Where did I say I was judging solely on his bat?
  12. Yeah, edited that. The A's play with the payroll of a small market team.
  13. because ops+ isn't the sum total of a baseball player's skills? Sure isn't the worst thing to have a high number in either. LETS FRAME THIS A DIFFERENT WAY!!! because UZR isn't the sum total of a baseball player's skills? Sure isn't the worst thing to have a high number in either. YOU JUST HELPED ME PROVE WE SHOULDN'T SIGN PRINCE FIELDER. Two things: 1) The Cubs aren't a small market team. 2) UZR is not as important as OPS+, especially in a 1B. Edit: Probably should say that Cubs don't play with the same payroll as a small market team.
  14. by this logic no small market team with no hope of contending this year should ever spend money on a veteran and should aim to have a major league payroll of like $10 million. I don't know how spending 10% of your payroll on a guy who has only once in the past six years put up an OPS+ over 100 can be considered a smart move. because ops+ isn't the sum total of a baseball player's skills? Sure isn't the worst thing to have a high number in either.
  15. I don't think Coco is a horrible player, but I also think it would be better to save that 14 million and use it when your good players hit arbitration instead of having to trade them away every single year.

  17. Uh, we only tolerate teensy-tiny salaries around here, pal. I'm all for spending money on players. That should be an advantage that the Cubs have over other teams. And if we'd have given Crisp this money instead of DeJesus then I would have been okay with it (I'm also happy with the DeJesus signing). But it doesn't make much sense for the A's.
  18. For Oakland that's a ton of money.
  19. 2 years, 14 million. Ouch.
  20. I'd go as high as $3.5, but that's just because he is Kerry Wood. I know it's overpaying, but we have some room and I don't want Kerry leaving again until he retires. I know it's stupid, so no need to tell me. But yeah, $5 is too much.
  21. His changeup is currently a 2, but has the potential to be an 8. That seems likely. Good to know. what the hell is that site? exactly Its the online version of a game. Its fake. http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/out-of-the-park-baseball/index.php That many people don't know about OOTP, the best baseball sim on the market?
  22. It's Cubs news. What else should we be doing? Sitting around and reading old game threads?
  23. I've never understood the whole "It's a small decision, so even if it was a bad one, it doesn't matter." Why not make as good as possible decisions all the time? Or is that expecting too much? And yes, I still have faith in Theo and haven't given up on him already.
  24. And in the meantime, there is no reason to pretend to be happy about signing a guy like Reed Johnson just because it was Theo that signed him.
