  1. Oops, back to having zero trust in Chatwood
  2. Chatwood actually looked really good there. Jeff Mathis hitting a well placed cutter out to dead center was so inexplicable I'm pretending it didn't happen
  3. Stop walking that Deshields guy. My goodness.
  4. I had forgotten how high up Lynn's beard line goes
  5. Hey maybe we can still come away from this game being encouraged by a Cub starting pitcher
  6. Like of course Kris Bryant still plays catch with his dad in the street.
  7. He’s been worth 3.3 WAR in two seasons he’s played as a 22 and 23 year old. He’s good, he needs to improve in areas but he’s good and given the options we have for the 12 position players to make the OD 25-man he deserves to be on it. I’m glad we’re making these guys be more accountable/needing to show improvements but it’s hard to see they’re doing that when Almora and Caratini are just basically handed jobs when they’re not as good as Happ and have been worse than him recently. Seems like rules are being applied to guys differently. It does seem a bit backwards but I also feel like they're doing this because Happ still has actual upside with power and patience at a variety of positions. There's only so much to unlock with Almora. Still shocked by this though. There were moments the last two years I (and a lot of people) thought Happ would get sent down yet they stuck with him. I also think Descalso factors into this in that he's not just a Seal Boy replacement; dude's actually gonna start quite a bit.
  8. The AAA relievers are gonna need to learn to hit and play positions to be able to keep even half of them.
  9. Watching some of the festivities last night on TV re-energized me. This is still a really deep and talented roster. But for the love of god can we address the bullpen even a little bit.
  10. Now I wonder if the front office does regret Hamels. If they would've known the Harper and Machado market apparently doesn't seriously include the Yankees or Dodgers, I wonder if they proceed differently.
  11. I'd lean no if I had to guess, but I think we're very much in it. For me, since the Yu signing last off-season, I kinda figured some money would need to be moved around to make Harper work. Now, I didn't expect the reports to be so dire, but I think a lot of people overestimate the difficulty in clearing some of this payroll. As Bertz has said, some of those moves wouldn't make sense without Bryce, so everything is on hold.
  12. The new Athletic Cubs podcast from Dec 7 was a depressing listen. Bruce Levine is like the only baseball writer giving the Cubs any shot at this. DiCaro and Bernstein are reputable, but Bryce signing here would really shock a whole bunch of people. I think the single piece of information I'm still most optimistic about was that Bernstein segment last month talking about the Cubs, at that point, not being scared away by the price tag yet. This was after the collective wet blanket that is the Athletic having doubts. It was pretty matter-of-fact and as much as he annoys me on radio, he wouldn't say what he said without there being truth to it. Maybe. Hopefully.
  13. Both MLB Network and ESPN2 just had Harper segments and the Cubs weren't mentioned once. Charles the cat must be hanging out in different, totally real Las Vegas lobbies than the national writers.
  14. If we don't get Harper, I'd like to go all in with bullpen additions. That way when 6 of our relievers inevitably break down in September, we have more than one guy we can depend on.
  15. I lose track of who is actually credible anymore but horsefeathers I eat it all up. Give me all the tweets.
  16. Has that poster from pro sports daily who actually knows stuff said anything this offseason?
  17. What a weird, obviously not totally accurate tweet.
  18. Schwarber and Chatwood to the Rockies for Jon Gray Quintana to the Braves for Fried+ leading to Harper signing with the Cubs by Wednesday
  19. As much of a worst case scenario the Chatwood signing was, and if moving him makes a significant difference, I still think that's doable. Between Happ, Schwarber, Almora, Amaya, Hoerner, there are enough interesting-ish pieces to attach to him. Fitting in a trade for a top end reliever becomes more difficult after that though.
  20. I wish Charles' claim to fame was something a little more obscure than Darvish so I could believe. Though I guess I don't remember when we were first linked to him publicly.
  21. I take back what I said earlier then. That'd be an outstanding move if possible
  22. Feels like we're going to need to attach someone valuable to shed Chatwood in order to afford Harper and stay under the top tier, instead of just swapping bad contracts. But I guess who the hell even knows if the top tier is the actual limit.
