  1. Justin (Nashville): The three best prospects for Daytona appear to be Matt Szczur, Ronald Torreyes, and Arismendy Alcantara. Did any of these three come close to cracking the Top 20? How would you rank all three as prospects? J.J. Cooper: If I was ranking how close it would be Alcantara, Szczur then Torreyes. I've already talked about Alcantara. As far as Torreyes, guys still like him, but when you are a really short 2B, you have to put up numbers to answer concerns about your ceiling. This year for the first time, Torreyes struggled to put up those numbers. Don't give up on him by any stretch, but he's more likely to be a role player type than an impact everyday guy. With Szczur, I had one scout say "at some point, we've got to stop giving him a pass for being young in baseball experience." The concerns were that Szczur's swing doesn't allow the ball to carry much—he needs to learn how to backspin the ball more if he's going to be more than a gap-to-gap guy. His tools are impressive and he would have been in the 25-to-30 range.
  2. He might but the huge difference is Zunino plays a premier defensive position and he's going to stay at that position. Shaffer has an outside shot at being a corner outfielder but odds are he ends up at first which really hurts his overall value.
  3. I would be surprised if he's an established big leaguer in 2 years. It took Posey less than 2 years and Zunino will have the benefit of signing earlier and he'll get half a season of pro ball under his belt in his draft year. Zuinino doesn't have the hit tool Posey does but he has every bit the power (probably a tick higher), defense and intagibles of Posey. He's going to be a heck of a player for a long time.
  4. I love Mike Zunino. He has the highest floor of any player in the draft. He'll be the team leader for whoever drafts him in less than 2 years.
  5. and the Royals too. Thanks for helping me make my point.
  6. And what does that get you? The Mets released Fernando Martinez today and he along with Lastings Millege and Carlos Gomez was supposed to be the greatest outfield in the history of baseball (oops). These prospect lists are given WAY too much credit than they deserve.
  7. A dusty hoody as the centerpiece coming back would work too.
  8. Would they have received a supplemental pick under the new CBA rules?
  9. Quentin is 1 yr from free agency. He's also injury prone and a poor defensive player. It's an ok return but I don't think they could have expected much.
  10. The Cubs still owe the Padres compensation for Hoyer and McLeod. Maybe they offer Jackson and a low level prospect for Rizzo and call it a day?
  11. At this point I would be shocked if the Cubs didn't trade for Rizzo. He was drafted by the Red Sox then Hoyer traded for him in the Adrian Gonzalez deal. He would be the perfect young, left handed power hitting first baseman this team needs.
  12. Ah. I see what you're saying. I thought you meant he wouldn't be interested in those teams or vice versa. Carry on. #-o
  13. Why? Toronto is a team on the rise. They have a good young lineup, a good young rotation, arguably the best minor league system in baseball and after some salary dumping moves (Vernon Wells) they have money to spend. Fielder, Bautista, Lawrie and Lind would make a crazy-scary middle of the batting order.
  14. Another guy I read about is LHP Phillippe Valiquette (24) from the Mariners. He missed all of last season with an elbow injury and when he has pitched he's not very good BUT he has a 99 mph fastball. Despite the warts a lefty with a 99 mph heater should be enough to make him the first player chosen in the rule 5 draft.
  15. Well yeah they can't put him on now but they could have a few weeks ago if they would have anticpated there would be interest in him. Again I know they didn't have a lot of time to properly evaluate everyone but it would be a shame to lose Flaherty for nothing.
  16. They wouldn't lose him if they put him on the 40 man roster which they will have to do if they select him in the rule 5 draft. Maybe it's because of the front office uncertainty and the new regime didn't have enough time to make a move but it seems like a missed opportunity.
  17. I read 2 different articles today that said the Yankees and Braves have interest in Flaherty and the Yankees article said they should trade up to make sure they get him. I didn't realize there is this much interest in Flaherty and it begs the question, why couldn't the Cubs trade him and get some value?
  18. If he cuts down on his swing he can definitely be a top of the order hitter. Baseball seems to be trending towards the non-traditional type leadoff hitter. He may strikeout 120+ times but with his skill set he can easily go 20/20 or even 20/30.
  19. Junior Lake sure looks the part. He's long, lean, very athletic and has bat speed to burn though he's still raw. His swing is a little long and he made spotty plays in the field. He probably needs another year/year and a half of seasoning but when he's ready I can see this kid as a corner outfielder and devastaing top of the order hitter.
  20. Thanks! That's a really good point. He was young for those leagues and the improvement he's shown this past year is encouraging. I just really want to see him continue that improvement at the next level.
  21. Vitters has repeated the last two leagues he's played in so I'm going to wait until he performs well when given a new challenge before I'm ready to change my opinion of him.
