    I haven't read through the thread yet -- and someone's probably already expressed this thought -- but do you remember when everyone was lamenting the thought of Jon Lester facing this team in the playoffs? They way I remember it, the Pirates would run all over the bases all day and Jon would basically be rendered catatonic on the mound.

    Yeesh. K% at 18.0%. Ground-ball rate under 40%. He's been made to look worse by the defense playing behind him and the park he's playing in. But, he's also just been a lot worse. And he's on the wrong side of 30. Good thing he didn't accept our extension offer.

    That's what confuses me. I think the Pirates are probably a better team than St. Louis, so I'd rather try to knock them out at once with Arrieta and deal with St. Louis in a longer series. Especially since the St. Louis SP are pretty interchangeable. Facing St. Louis in the Wild Card does maximize the odds of *getting to* the NLDS though, so maybe people just want to get there and let the cards fall as they may. Bingo. You neutralize the whole "Pittsburgh is better than St. Louis" thing by only facing them once, and with Arrieta on the mound. Get me that match-up for one game over five with them.
