  1. Count me in the group of guys who doesn’t like trading DeRosa. Peavy is amazing, but I really really really don’t want to trade DeRosa. He is so much more valuable than even his good stats indicate. He can play everywhere, he’s a great clubhouse guy, and he’s one of the few major leaguers and Cubs players who I think ‘gets it,” as in what it means to be a MLB ballplayer, what it means to be a Cub, what it would mean for the Cubs to win a WS. He’s liked and respected in the clubhouse. He can put up similar stats to last year again (minus some power numbers) and do it all while playing his ass off and contributing everything to this team, which is more than I can say for other members of this roster. I understand that Peavy is way more valuable than DeRosa in terms of player value. But the value DeRosa brings to this roster is so far above and beyond stats that I think losing him would be a bigger shock to the team than people realize. I’m torn on it. Let’s see what happens. We need hitting more than pitching. Dealing from our “weakness” (we had a damn good offense last year, but choked in the playoffs) to acquire yet another piece of our strength…I’m very leery.
  2. I can see Hendry at the blackjack tables at 4 am with a gin and tonic in one hand, a rack of lamb in the other, tossing in 4 times the minimum bet every hand, blathering out "Z? Yeahhhh sure, I'll deal anybody, I'm Jim effing Hendry."
  3. Pass on Lyon...but wouldn't mind bringing back Juan Cruz for middle relief. But somebody is going overpay him because he has great stuff.
  4. Any closer getting paid this much money is ridiculous...they just aren't worth this much money.
  5. If this were a Bill James stat, Theriot would be going to Cooperstown before Santo. ](*,)
  6. I'd be happy regardless of when he gets in...predeath, posthumously...but the joys of seeing him hear that news in person, and the speech he would give, are what I TRULY wanted to see. And now I won't see either.
  7. I don't understand how Santo doesn't pass the common sense test for these crotchety old folk, let alone the statistical analysis to back it up. Common effing sense here.
  8. soapdropping...I like it. :-))
  9. this is a [expletive] travesty.
  10. I can't see him going anywhere else...I think he re-ups for about $2mil, which he is easily worth.
  11. He'd be an idiot to take one. He's rich, he's retiring...hit the golf course everyday and leave the MLB grind behind.
  12. Rocket pretty much nailed it. If you compare the average statistics of major league pitchers, Marquis is easily a very very good #5 SP, and even qualifies as a strong #4 starter for most MLB teams. He can throw 200 innings, does it at league average to slightly above league average numbers in terms of ERA+...he's a very solid MLB pitcher. The problem is he just isn't worth that contract. Would I miss him? No. But if we do not acquire any more SP this offseason (i.e. Peavy), I don't really like the idea of just dumping him for scraps unless that entire contract is taken off our books (which is unlikely.) Starting pitching is a luxury the Cubs enjoy right now, and with injury prone Harden around, we need to keep as much depth as possible.
  13. I really really want Blanco back. He is the perfect backup catcher for this team. He knows his role, and when he plays, he plays pretty damn well offensively and defensively. Hopefully this doesn’t drive him to retirement…
  14. Fantastic news. I am glad Brenly didn't wind up in Milwaukee as well. To be honest, at the end of last year I wouldn't have minded at all. Brenly really made some great strides as a color guy this year, to the point where I really couldn't imagine a team outside of Len and Bob calling games for this team. Brenly stopped being a cheerleader/storyteller and really gave some good, strong analysis in 2008. Now let's get Raul Ibanez and call it an offseason.
  15. is it somewhat sad that I am upset that I might not be able to view a potential Santo induction in Cooperstown because my wedding is that same month?
  16. I believe it was Bill James who said having the likes of Ron Santo on the outside of Cooperstown while having several other players who are currently in there (can't remember who he named) is like having cats and dogs in the zoo while letting lions walk the streets. Too true.
