  1. They don’t make em like this anymore [tweet]https://twitter.com/super70ssports/status/1196989535298691073[/tweet]
  2. Ben Simmons just made his first 3 in a game since college, when he made exactly 1 in 3 attempts. horsefeathering wild he hadn’t made a 3 in the NBA to this point.
  3. Padres too, who we obviously have a bit of a rapport with. I think there’s a good chance we are working on finalizing at least a small move like Wick last year. Possible it’s a big one like Willy (especially with the Padres).
  4. We have a billion 40-man spots open, he might be a worthwhile claim. He had TJ and missed all of 2018 and sucked last year but he was a former highly thought of pitcher and is still only like 27.
  5. I liked Martin the most of the mid level FA bullpen arms, but that being said after Will Smith no reliever on the FA market this year was particularly notable. This may be a good sign for the market though. The last two years relievers signed way before everyone else, but even that was a week or two into December. If we're a few weeks ahead of the last two winters hopefully that pace keeps up. Yeah I had interest in Martin, don’t think I would’ve even wanted him at this 2/14 number which isn’t bad but I think right now I’m fine bringing Pedro back on a cheap 1 year deal, doing the minor league deal for Morrow, look for a Wick/Wieck type low key trade, acquire a RP in any trade we do for Willy/KB/Q/etc, then if there’s a guy out there in ST that’s willing to sign for 1 year cheaply do that. There’s nothing out there I care to commit more than 1 year and $10+ mil to at this point.
  6. The Braves are trying to out do the Rockies from two offseasons age. Between Smith, Melancon, Greene and Martin that’s like $50-60 mil in RPs just for this year.
  7. Absolutely. You’re right he probably only takes a 1 year deal guaranteed with his age, but I’m guessing he might get offers to get more of a full time role elsewhere. He hits lefties really well career 128 wRC+, .367 wOBA, 148 and .389 last year. So he’d be a likely cheap way to address that part of the team that was a weakness last year.
  8. Moving the Rays to Orlando might not be a terrible idea, adding a third team to Florida seems like it would be though.
  9. We did the Wick for Vosler trade a year ago today. With the 40-man deadline coming up tomorrow and us having like 8 spots open I wouldn’t be shocked if we pull off a small trade like that today or tomorrow.
  10. Still a fan of doing the Q and maybe a Short, Underwood, Almora or whatever throw in type for Pivetta, Hernandez (try and extend to like 3/18 to save some real and AAV $), and maybe a relief pitcher lotto ticket trade I’ve brought up. Especially if we pull off a SP in a Willy trade (Gray, Lamet, some other MLB ready guy).
  11. Yup, that’s no money. Non-tendering Russell and Almora basically makes it a net even (or even saves us some) money on the AAV. His profile, on the surface, seems like a great fit and the CF market is non-existent. The only issue I have with him, as I’ve mentioned before is he’s a LHH so finding a RHH who can handle CF is still a need but maybe we can lower the bar to a Pillar type if he’s non-tendered or a Lagares, Broxton, Maybin type on a cheap deal. Margot would still be a great add with Akiyama if he’s reasonably available.
  12. His stats show he hits better and with more power at Petco. Home - .245/.313/.400/.713 Away - .251/.290/.388/.678 in 2019, margot had a wRC+ of 69 at home (nice) and 95 on the road, FWIW. wOBA of .270 at home vs .319 on road. his walk rate at home was almost double his road walk rate though, which is weird. Given his pretty extreme splits vs LHP and RHP it would be interesting to see the breakdown if he faced a disproportionate amount of one or the other home vs road to maybe explain some of the home/road splits.
  13. I’m not overly tech savvy, but maybe it was easier to get the video to a TV vs laptop off the camera they had set up? It looks like the TV was hard wired (wires hanging down from the ceiling) vs having to use WiFi or something from the camera to a laptop. Also maybe they felt they needed a bigger screen to get a better look at the catcher signals vs like a 12” laptop screen? I think it's more likely that they were too dumb to pull off what they they were trying to do without getting caught. Like, it's so hilariously high and low tech at the same time. There's no way they HAD to use a monstroso monitor or TV for this. Yeah that too. Smart enough to be able to decipher the signs, but too dumb (or arrogant) to carry it out in a way that was smart/hidden.

  15. I don’t want Almora back, but to play devil’s advocate, on opening day he had a .350 wOBA v. LHP and a +2 UZR (+9 DRS) in CF. A roster spot is 600k minimum, so while his projected 1.8 number isn’t nothing if money is tight, that <1.5 incremental is a small amount in the grand scheme where you have ~10ish roster spots where you don’t know the exact salary(either acquisition or arb). Ultimately its a decision that’s down the list of things that are important to me, like whether or not Descalso comes back. And now it’s down to .318 and 96 wRC+ vs LHP, +3 DRS, .8 UZR. He horsefeathering sucks and the facts are clear as day. Maybe the money likely ends up not making an overly material difference, but he can’t be taking major league ABs/starts to start the year and ~$2 mil seems like a lot to let a guy go try and figure it out in Iowa when he never really was good to begin with. I’d rather try another guy or two out there, even if they’re castoffs from other teams like even a Keon Broxton or Juan Lagares or whatever. Just try something else because Almora clearly ain’t it.
  16. From July 2018-2019 Almora hit .234/.270/.343 with a 58 wRC+ in ~600 PAs & rated awful defensively. From 2018-2019 he had 830 PAs, 183 guys had 800+ he ranked 175th in wRC+, 166th in OBP and 173rd in WAR. He’s a bad baseball player, there’s no reason to keep him and there isn’t much pedigree/numbers (MLB or MiLB) to fall back on. You can find an upgrade over that even if it isn’t all that good of a player and I’m guessing ~$2 million isn’t nothing to us again this offseason.
  17. Yeah this is bad, I think they gotta come down with something big. Lost draft picks/IFA $, a significant fine, possible player suspensions if they can prove which guys really were in on it, and coach and FO suspensions and bans should all be on the table.
  18. Figure out a way to extend this man, please. [tweet] [/tweet]

  20. My mistake, MLB contracts reported with a huge distinction between guaranteed money and total value is a tale as told as time. Nothing NFL-y about that. My mistake, nothing to see here and the owners are great guys baseball's going great I mean Will Smith signed yesterday even with a QO so see trust I don’t give a horsefeathers how they’re reported, the fact is they’ve been structured that way for a long time with option years. This is nothing new or nefarious.
  21. Also when most guys are extended with buying out Arb years isn’t it pretty common practice to still pay them around what they would’ve gotten in Arb still in those years? Javy is pegged between 9-10 this year and probably 14-16 next year. In any extension I’d assume he’s getting around that in 20 and 21. I don’t know where the writer thinks there’s savings. In any extension Javy isn’t getting $20+ mil this year in salary. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a guy sign an extension buying out Arb years where he’s making like 2x or more money in the new deal in the Arb years.
  22. Yeah see, I just think that kind of contract offer (total value and guaranteed - sneaking some NFL contract language in there yaaaaaaaaaaay) is way more likely in FA than an extension Dude, MLB teams have been structuring deals this way for years with option years being “not guaranteed.” It has nothing to do with your thinking the MLB is being NFL’ized.
  23. Yu’s Twitter timeline is wild right now. Based on the translations, it looks like Yahoo Japan ran a story about a hit and run where a guy killed someone(s) but used a photo of Darvish in the headline. There’s also this
