  1. Nobody is going to get a billion dollar loan right now. They have no choice if they really want to sell it They could always ask the Government :-))
  2. If that is seriously all that the Cubs are offering, what on earth could the Braves package be that the Padre's would even consider the Cubs offer? Escobar and a bag of balls is a better trade than that. Maybe Peavy is being stubborn with the NTC about not wanting to go to ATL if they give up too much, or maybe the Braves really don't want to give up Escobar, Hansen and other top prospects. Even if we threw in someone like Ceda or Castillo to finish it off that still is an average return. I guess everyone was saying the same thing about Johan last year, that it was going to take a teams top 2-3 prospects, and he went for a similar package. If thats all we give up you have to wonder if there is a third team involved, which has been speculated.
  3. So, you are saying there is a deal? There was a article yesterday in the USA toady saying the Cubs submitted an offer Wednesday night "Chicago made a trade proposal Wednesday night, Cubs GM Jim Hendry said, but he declined to divulge specifics. Towers, who expects Peavy to be traded before the Dec. 8 winter meetings, said one of the three teams wants a decision by Nov. 14, the first day free agents can solicit offers from all clubs." http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/2008-11-06-peavy_N.htm
  4. That is scary. A 16 game winner as your 5th starter. Actually my rotation would be 1. Peavy 2. Zambrano 3. Dempster 4. Lilly 5. Harden. Until Harden proves he can stay healthy and can go every turn, you should send him down to the 5th spot and rest him from time to time. The Cubs could possibly win over 100 games with that. The other teams in the Central have to be Howrying their pants if this deal goes down. The problem is, who is going to show up to hit the FREAKING ball in the post season. An as-of-now-undetermined lefty bat of consequence? Let just say if the Cubs get Peavy. :beg: Take the money they were going to spend on Dempster and sign Raul Ibanez to play right. Platoon Fukie and Reed in CF. Sign Woody back as the closer. Pick up another decent arm for the bullpen. Pick up another utility infielder. Marquis, Hill, or Veal is your 5th starter. They are set, don't ya think? Thats my thinking as well, if we trade for Peavy the picks we get for Dempster become more valuable as we will take quite a blow to our system through the trade but recouping 2 picks for him weakens the hit. Take that 40ish mil and use it towards Wood, Ibanez, Cintron and a bullpen buy like Joe Beimel, Tyler Walker, Juan Cruz, or Kevin Gregg(if he is non-tendered).
  5. I agree I think he could win 12-15 games pitching half his games there. With that offense, or lack of offense, I'm not sure about that. Maybe 12. But wins don't mean anything...he'd likely give up a relatively small amount of runs pitching half his games there. He's a very good pitcher even without that park. I meant it more along the lines he would pitch like a 12-15 win pitcher there, it's unlikely he actually gets there, Peavy only won what 10-11 games last year, so it's pretty obvious Marshall likely couldn't win 15 next year but he could post a good numbers but not get the wins to back those numbers up.
  6. Well you gotta give up something. Samardzija isn't much of a centerpiece. Please get this done!!! 1-2-3 of Peavy, Z, and Harden is just disgusting. If this is done I really, really hope Dempster is NOT brought back. That money is better spent elsewhere. Unless Marshall is also included in the deal, then I'd probably look to bring back Dempster. Well even if it's Samardzija and Marshall we still have Gaudin, Guzman, and possibly though unlikely Hill for fill in starters. I agree just let Dempster walk take the picks, it would help weaken the blow of trading for Peavy by being able to recoup 2 extra draft picks next year. Plus if Samaradzija is included he does have a higher contract than normal and though it isn't huge it certainly helps to shave some salary and may allow for an extra sign/trade elsewhere. If the Shark and Marshall are gone we'd have to keep Marquis around this year as the 5th starter and then rely on Gaudin to be the backup SP (which we all know we will need). You can't rely at all on Guzman or Hill unfortunately. I hope we can find a way to not include Marshall. While it's always important to have good options for backup starters it shouldn't hold Jim back to give up both Marshall and Samardzija if that is what it is going to take. I think we can/could rely on Guzman if needed to start a few games along with Gaudin. Marquis would need to stay as you said and that is fine he is a above aver 5th starter.

  8. Whaaaa? We should be thrilled if Samardzija was the centerpiece of a trade. That's robbery While it wouldn't be ideal to give Samardzija up, if he was what was stopping a trade from getting done then you have to include him. Marshall, Samardzija, Pie, Cedeno and possibly a lower level prospect would be a pretty good and fair deal IMHO. COME ON JIMBO!!! :yahoo: Anyone with any idea what the "limited" trade clause is are the Padres one of the teams listed or not for Shark? That is a lot to give up. Not to say I wouldn't do it, but that is a lot. No doubt it's a lot but you have to give up a lot to get a lot, Peavy is a stud top 5 pitcher in all of baseball and we have him under contract well below market value for 5 years.

  11. This has Hendry written on all it. The Braves certaintly have the prospects to make a team to trade trade without involving a third team or 4th team. It really does there is no reason like you said for the Braves to get a 3rd team involved. Maybe the Astros or Cardnials are up to something as well but I doubt it, I think it's Hendry all the way.
  12. Here is a part of article from Yahoo quoting Towers. Maybe Jimbo is working on getting a 3rd team involved to get us bullpen help or a lefthanded bat along with Peavy? Maybe be a 3 way with the Marlins including Hermida(Cubs) and Olsen(Padres). “We’re not to the point where we’ve agreed on who the players are coming back. We just have an idea of who’s available to us and who’s not,” Towers said. “Now it’s just a matter of looking at three priority teams that are involved and trying to figure out what our optimum deal is. Some of them involve third teams and potentially fourth teams, so it becomes a little more complicated.” http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-gmmeetings&prov=ap&type=lgns
  13. Exactly what does getting Peavy accomplish for them? They lose a guy in Escobar who has potential to be a all-star SS for the next decade, and any prospects that they give up they lose out on developing them to be part of a competing team 3-4 years down the road. There is no way they contend this year and it's unlikely they contend they next 2 seasons.
  14. Potentially, but the problem with PTBNLs at this point in the season is that you never know where a guy will end up come June/July. If they make Flaherty a PTBNL and he's out for the season with a torn hamstring come June/July, the Padres will look like morons. Well we could do what the Brewers did with CC they had a PTBNL and gave the Indians two choices between michael brantley and taylor green. We could give them 3 choices say they can pick from Flaherty, Carpenter or Jackson. That way they get time to scout them over most of the summer and pick who they think is the best one. And then when Jay Jackson has a 0.26 ERA on July 1st, the Cubs look like morons. Will it really look that stupid when Peavy has 12-15 wins at the ASB? Would you really not make a trade for a top 5 MLB pitcher arguably top 3 if all that was holding it up was Jay Jackson?
  15. I know I have the same feeling, I saw that fake article post and had a accounting test like 15 minutes after it go posted it was hard for me to focus during the test because I kept thinking about how we got Peavy and I was thinking what the trade was(who's involved, third team?, etc.) I just wanted to get back to the computer to read up on it and then when I get back it was obvious it was a fake post.

  17. Please, please, please, please When I click on that link that isn't the article I am getting, do I need to click on something else?
  18. What about this three way? Cubs get: Jake Peavy, Jeremy Hermida, and Kevin Gregg Padres get: Scott Olsen, Felix Pie, Ronny Cedeno, Jose Ascanio/Kevin Hart, and Sean Marshall Marlins get: Kyle Blanks, Wellington Castillo, and Jose Ceda
  19. If we trade for Peavy I doubt we have enough left to trade for Hermida, I would guess we would sign Raul Ibanez. I like the idea of Furcal, another possibility is Orlando Hudson. We also need to find a relief pitcher or two somewhere.
  20. If that's all it took, this deal should have been done yesterday. It's going to cost a couple more prospects along with that package. But, it would still be more than worth it. What about a 3 way? Cubs get: Peavy, prospect from Twins or Giles if he waves NTC. Twins get: Khalil Greene, Jose Ascanio or Kevin Hart Padres get: Delmon Young, Sean Marshall, Pie/Fontenot/Cedeno, Jose Ceda/Wellington Castillo, and Mitch Atkins/Donnie Veal/Larry Suarez/Gaudin(if they want a more major league ready guy) That might actually work. Greene could have a good year in Minnesota. They need a SS, and I don't think they are that high on Delmon. Minnesota isn't going to pay 6.5M for Greene after the season he had last year. They're not going to give up on Young after one season either. They are trading Young this offseason they want to make room so their OF can be Span, Gomez and Cuddyer. They have said they are looking to trade him for a 3B or SS.

  22. Well he is younger and cheaper than most lefthanded RFer's that are FA, he was a highly touted prospect coming up and is still young 24-25, his home/road splits are pretty drastic(through his whole career) he hit .288 .364 OBP 13 HR 40 RBI on the road this year and only .203 .273 OBP 4 HR 21 RBI at home, thats why a lot of of people want the Cubs to get him they think getting him out of Florida will help him take that next step, and he could easily produce just as much as any of the FA (Abreu, Dunn, Ibanez) for much cheaper. I don't think it would be out of the question for him to hit 25-35 HR .285-.305 .360-.380 OBP and have 90+RBI playing half his games in Wrigley/outside of Florida. If we can get Hermida and Gregg for a combination of Ceda, Castillo, Pie, Fontenot(if uggla is traded), Veal, Atkins, Ascanio, and Hart that would be a great trade for us it strengthens up a questionable bullpen in the 6/7 innings and gives us a legit lefthanded bat for the next 5+ years.
  23. Hopefully I have always been a big fan of his, I was thinking it would take Ceda, Castillo, and a prospect to get him but seeing as they just traded Jacobs for a 25 year old reliever all it might take is Ceda or Castillo and a prospect. With that recent article saying Fuku to CF and trade for Lefthanded RF, and sign/trade for bullpen help why not try to also get Kevin Gregg included in a Hermida trade, that way we have a backup plan for closer if Wood leaves and Marmol stays in the more valuable spot, or if Wood returns Gregg could become a 6th/7th inning guy.
  24. Does anyone go any info on this guy? Looking at his stats in AA he put up pretty good numbers, but he is bit old for a prospect 27-28 next year. Could he be a lefthanded bat we could use in the next year or two? Or is he a Hoffpauir/career minor leaguer? http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Doug%20Deeds&pos=RF&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=448671
  25. They certainly have the depth to deal one of their OF prospects (Heyward, Schafer, Jones, Hernandez) and not blink an eye, but outside of the SP crop that just graduated and Hanson, it doesn't seem to me like they have anything that could fit the "two major league ready SP" requirement. While the Braves seem to be able to make some sort of a package work, if I was them I wouldn't sell the farm to get Peavy, they are more than just a Peavy away from contending next year, and a trade could set them back instead of making them better, if they got Peavy outside of him their rotation is still average as Hudson might not be back next year with his injury, Glavine is a number 4 at best, Smoltz might be done, Jurjens(sp?) is good but still learning then they got a bunch of guys still not ready/just average at best talent to pick from. They need at least one more bat and their bullpen could use work(as most teams do from year to year). It's starting to look like Peavy might need to expand his list of acceptable teams or else the Padres might need to lower their demands from the listed teams(which they shouldn't and probably won't). This could all be a bluff by the Braves/Cardinals too as they may try to lower demands/act not as interested.
