Drew Rundle was demoted to Peoria today as Tony Campana was promoted to Daytona. (swapped places). Outfielder Kurt Calvert has called it quits at EXTST in Mesa.
What is your impression of Perez? After 49 AB Perez has a .184 BA with 9 hits, 13 strikeouts, and 2 errors in the field. In Daytona.....Drew Rundle 7 hits, 18 s/o, .179 BA. Jonathan Wyatt 9 hits,8 s/o, .196 BA. In Tennessee....Richie Robnett 5 hits, 12 s/o, .122 BA. Brandon Guyer 7 hits,9 s/o, .146 BA. Do they have these outfielders slotted on the wrong ballclubs, or will they give them a few more weeks to see how things shake out before moving players around?
Nathan, I read on the play by play of today's game that Cliff Andesen had a single to left field and had to come out of the game with a leg injury. Any update on this?
I think the opposing clubs will eventually get the scouting report on Perez.....he is a fastball only hitter that will be back to the mound if he continues to struggle with the offspeed stuff.
I have a short list of some of the players in EXTST.....Cerda,Kemp,Watkins,Jones,Calvert,Brenly,Keedy,Hoorelbeke,Sontag,Weimer,Mattheus,Sosa,Soto,Opitz, Cashner. I believe that the EXTST games began yesterday but haven't seen any reports yet.
I just noticed that at 3 levels (low A, high A, double AA ) we only have 2 righthand hitting outfielders. Did the Cubs make it their goal a few years back to stock up on lefthand hitting outfielders? Low A....all lefties....Andersen,Campana.Burke,& Perez. High A....all lefties....Colvin,Johnston,Rundle,& Wyatt. Double AA.....2 lefties.....Adducci & Robnett....2 righties...Guyer & Wright. Triple AAA & the major league clubs are balanced with both.
I was exaggerating based on the kind of outfielders the Cubs have drafted in the last few years ( with a few exceptions). At the major league level, they have it right, with two corner outfieders ( Bradley & Soriano)that play adequate defense and can hit for average & power. Jericho Jones ( 6'5" 225 ) is more in the category of Corey Hart with the Brewers ( 6'6" 220 ).A guy that size doesn't necessarily have to play first base when he has the skills athleticism, and power requirements of a corner outfielder.
The Cubs idea of a major league outfielder is 5'6-5'10, speedy, spray hitter with no power. Jericho can easily handle the corner outfield positions with his glove, strong arm, and average-plus speed. The trick is convincing the powers that be, that a 6'5" outfielder (that can hit breaking pitches) with a huge power bat is in the long range plans of the Cubs. He has Hoffpair power but can actually play solid defense in the outfield. He has played leftfield all this week with the Tennessee squad and caught the eye of Ryno & the other coaches. He hit one ball up in the top of one of those Palm trees past the left-center outfield fence the other day.....some of the players are still talking about it.If he starts out in Boise I think he won't be there long as he gets' a chance to finally be "seen".
Nathan, With only a week left of spring training have they pretty much settled the rosters for the minor leaguers (specifically the Peoria Chiefs) ? If not, when will they announce who's going where? Did you make the trip to Mesa and are you checking out the potential Chiefs? Thanks
I heard that 7 players were cut from the minor league camp today so the trimming down and re-alignment of rosters has begun.I only heard one name mentioned......Ryan Harvey, 1st round pick out of HS in 2003.Our recent 1st round picks seem to get bogged down in the lower levels.
Peoria Low-A team defeated the A's Low-A team today 3-2. Not a lot of hits today. Michael Brenly had a hit,as did David Macias and Sean Hoorelbeke. Jericho Jones 2 for three with a walk, double, and a game winning rbi single. Larry Suarez pitched 2 good innings then they followed with a new pitcher for each inning. That's all I know
I heard that Peoria low-A lost today to the Giants low-A team 8-5. Jericho Jones was the dh and went 3 for 4.Keedy sat out with a sore knee. Brenly behind the plate. Willis in lf, Macias in cf, Perez in rf,Vitters at 3b,Castro at 2b.That's all I could find out.
Josh Vitters with a homerun & Jericho Jones a double Thursday, as the Peoria team beats the Giants low-A team 8-4. Re-match today at Fitch park. I sure hope we'll be getting some reports on the minor leaguers as they prepare for the upcoming season. I hear that they've already begun to move players down as players from major league camp are moved down.
Nathan, Thanks for the work you're doing and the insights you provide. I understand the minor league pitchers & catchers report to ST on Sat March 7 followed by the position players on Wed March 11 with workouts beginning on March 12. Do you know when this huge group of players get divided up by level? Is it pretty much "controlled mayhem" at Fitch Park for about three weeks?
How about players that are not even listed in the top 30 who will emerge out from under the radar this year? My choice......outfielder Jericho Jones. This is a guy that turned down being drafted as a pitcher in the 3rd round because he loves to hit and play everyday. He led the Arizona Rookie league in hitting for the majority of the summer but tailed off in mid August.
I agree....I hope they will cover the minor league teams and players ( who's hot, who's not, etc). When they cover spring training I hope they venture over to cover the minor league players also.
With a week to go in instructionals, AZ Phil is MIA. I sure appreciate his reports from Arizona......I guess he's concentrating on the Cubs-Dodgers series.
I heard that the Cubs instructional team played the A's to a 3-3 tie on Wednesday with only Tony Campana, Jericho Jones (double,bb), and Josh Vitters getting hits. The team has only 8 hits in the last two games. Must be facing some really good pitching.
