  1. Well, it is Bleacher Report. 95% of the "articles" are pure [expletive].
  2. They start throwing out suspensions for every guy who's gambled or done blow, there's gonna be a helluva lot of minor league call ups.
  3. While it isn't fair and I don't necessarily agree with it all, every columnist/talking head (even the ones I think a lot of people around here respect) has bashed the Cubs since the deadline. This team is the laughing stock of the league right now. Someone has to be held accountable. By your logic we should never make a move. Too much acceptance of loser culture in this fanbase.
  4. Let's hope Heyman's source just cleans Tom's pool:
  5. How many of these big contracts actually work out? The K-rod, BJ Ryan, Baez, Fuentes and Percival deals all turned out to be onerous at best and mostly disastrous for their respective teams. While FG or whomever can attempt to fix a value to the performance of Marmol to justify his salary, history shows most of these guys to be a waste of money.
  6. I think the argument was something about how a FO shake-up could hinder our chances at signing Pujols.
  7. Wasn't he busted for this years ago and swore to give it up? And pretty ridiculous to include the cocaine stuff. I imagine every person in this country who's ever been to a party has been around cocaine use, whether they knew it or not.
  8. One of them was Tim.
  9. I never said "all over". And there were people here who argued to extend Hendry back in April.
  10. The Meche deal doesn't look so bad now. No, but it took an outlier year and him retiring in the middle of the contract for that to happen.
  11. There does seem to be a general feeling that his head must roll or the franchise won't be able to move on. The results speak volumes. To me, it's simple as that. He hasn't gotten it done, for whatever reasons. And he's been given more than enough time to do so. Time to move on. See I'd completely buy that, but then Brian Sabean went and won a WS without Barry Bonds. This is what I was alluding to in the transactions thread Mojo. People seem to already be rationalizing the possibility that Hendry might be retained. It can't be rationalized or spun.
  12. Speaking of which, has there ever been such a collective bout of insanity in the history of MLB as the stupid $ thrown around in 2006? Soriano 8/136 Wells 7/126 Lee 6/100 Suppan 4/42 Pierre 5/45 GMJ 5/50 Zito 7/126 Schmidt 3/47 Lugo 4/36 Dice K 6/102 Baez 3/20 Meche 5/55 Just look at all that trash. Some of these deals are considered the worst in MLB history, while others like Suppan's are the worst in that respective teams history. All in one offseason.
  13. I could see both the Angels and Blue Jays giving him that type of contract potentially. Both have tons of money to spend and nothing set in stone at first base (Trumbo for Anaheim and Lind for Toronto). I think the Angels will put that money towards giving Vernon Wells a raise. That was a horrid trade. His salary is going down after this year, though, and they still have $60 million (minus arbitration raises) to spend next year. On a side note, where is all the angst (nationally) over Wells' contract when people rip Soriano's to shreds? Wells has been a little more productive overall, but not that much. I'm not defending Soriano's contract by any means, but it doesn't seem like people are as aghast over Wells' as Soriano's. He was extended in the shadow of the Soriano signing. IMO Soriano gets most of the heat because his contract came first that offseason, setting the market for all the foolishness that followed.
  14. Sexy, but there's no way Fielder should bat behind Aramis. I like this lineup, too... vs righties: Jackson Castro Pujols Aramis Soto Colvin Byrd Flaherty vs Lefties: Castro Baker Pujols Aramis Soriano Soto Byrd Jackson / Colvin / RH 5th OF Soriano 6th? That outfield has the potential to worse than 05's dismal unit. Our infield would have to carry the team, but midseason pickups would be necessary to get us anywhere. Let's just focus on Fielder/Wilson and worry about serious contention after that.
  15. So Demp gets tossed out. What's the worst that could happen, us losing?
  16. What the what? What supporters? Perhaps perennial Cub spin doctors would be a better term. Examples. Pretty much all of the ideal replacements are working for other teams at the moment, so unless you mean "during the last offseason" when you say "sooner" that really doesn't mean much of anything. Look around. And I meant the offseason prior to last but last offseason would've been fine too.
  17. The guy's fucked up so many times that even when he's telling the truth is sounds like BS. Can't blame fans for being disgusted.
  18. What the what? What supporters? Perhaps perennial Cub spin doctors would be a better term. And I just hope Rob is right re: Hendry having his hands tied due to a lame duck status. This whole argument could have been avoided had he installed a new FO office sooner.
  19. Hendry's retention was Ricketts doing. I'm starting to kind of hope Hendry is extended, just to see how far some of his supporters around here will go to defend it.
  20. I wouldn't support going with LaHair either. With Pena there might be a 10% chance to contend (I'm making up numbers here, don't get too hung up on them). It's not a good chance, but there is a chance. With LaHair, who may well put up a 0 WAR or worse, that small chance drops further. Plus, if it's blatantly obvious the Cubs aren't trying to contend, they'll lose even more fans and the ballpark will get even more thin. The fans aren't dumb. If they send out a team that looks like this one, they're not going to react well. CJ Wilson would be a good pickup, but I don't think he'd be enough of a difference maker alone. If Pena is back, without a substantial upgrade elsewhere, and I don't know where else they'd have one, I cant imagine contending. I don't see another 100 loss disaster, but another 4th-5th place team. I think the only difference between Pena and LaHair would be a close 4th-5th place with a chance for 3rd if Pujols leaves the Cards vs. a distant 5th place with a chance for 4th if Pujols leaves the Cards. They still have a month and a day, but if Hendry stands pat it's an indictment on Ricketts for retaining him. Completely unacceptable.
  21. Why not? We have the money under the budget for 1 of Fielder/Pujols and then CJ Wilson, so it'd have to be that the Yankees or somebody swooped in and gave outrageous money or simply because you don't believe the Cubs would pursue filling both holes. We would have to let Aramis go in that scenario, but we're very equipped to fill third base with league average or better production. A platoon of Flaherty/Baker wouldn't give us Aramis level production, but they'd likely be above average offensively at third base. The improvements would be Fielder over Pena (significant) and Wilson over the current 5th starter quagmire (very, very significant) and then the downgrade from Aramis to a Flaherty/Baker platoon (hard to tell for sure, would be dependent on how well Flaherty adjusted to hitting ML pitching). You can't really believe that. If Ramirez walks, they'll have to add another bat somewhere. This lineup: Castro Barney Fielder Soto Byrd Soriano Baker/whomever Isn't contending for [expletive].
  22. I don't know. If Philly is cleaning out their farm system to win it all this year, I wonder what kind of prospect we could get for Wood. Then just sign him again for next year. Exactly. Why are people happy about this?
  23. He can catch a ride with Soriano. His ABs lately are worst I've ever seen him look. He's not this bad.
  24. Stole him? Fautino de los Santos was viewed as highly as Gio, if not higher. de los Santos was coming off a filthy, filthy 2007 and was looking like a future TOR arm. Ryan Sweeney was an upper level CF who was close to ready. Sure, in hindsight, only Gio has panned out, so maybe it feels like a "steal", but giving two high upside arms up, and an upper level CF? That's hardly a steal. Furthermore, de los Santos and Sweeney both were in the bigs for the A's. Edit: The author also takes a shot at the Dempster deal, and Dempster has been worth his contract in the first three years. Whether or not he's worth it in his final year, don't know, but when viewing the contract overall, I'm fine with that deal. Sweeney was an upper level CF? I thought you were the minor league guru. This guy was half way to washed up by then. I'll give you Santos, he did put up good #s before the trade. Still a steal though.
