Please explain how gravity does not have an effect on the slowing process. Gravity pulls you towards the Earth. Hitting the Earth stops you, not gravity. Gravity is pulling you straight down, towards the center of the Earth. It in no way affects your momentum perpendicular to the surface (forward). Air resistance slows you down in this direction, not gravity. Again, a force pulling down doesn't slow the forward progress of an item in air? Only wind resistance slows the object? I would think these two factors worked in combination to slow items. Well I studied Genetics and wasn't that great at Physics, but I will have to respectfully disagree.

    How about Gravity? When you dive you are not traveling parallel to the ground. Gravity doesn't affect your forward momentum. How will it stop you from reaching the bag...by pulling you down towards it? Gravity pulls you towards the earth, not an object. Wouldn't you also increase this gravitational pull by being parallel to the ground thereby having more body area affected?

If if didn't then why don't Javelins travel forever, using your theory a person should throw a javelin on a line and it would travel forever. Bullets also would travel forever.

    The base is 90 feet from home, no matter how tall you are your feet have to travel the SAME 90 feet. (Most) Batters stand as far back in the box as they can, allowing them longer to react to the pitch. If you want to be closer to the base, have them stand closer to the front of the box. This might allow them to be a step closer. Whether or not you believe this study, Duece should be teaching his kids to get out of the box quicker and working on their technique of transitioning from hitting to running. This is where the real time COULD be saved for these kids.

    Sorry i was off, I just looked back at the results. Running through was 4.425 secs, Sliding head first was 4.325 secs, and sliding feet first was 4.2 secs. So it was about .2-.3 secs faster from sliding feet to running. I'm guessing you hand-timed this? Yes, with a normal stop watch. There's def room for error. But I thought that sliding was faster before hand and I wasnt surprised with the results. I think the hand timing by me shouldnt be much of an error. Ok, so I got sucked into the thread. If you thought sliding was faster, do you think it is possible that you subconsciously stopped the watch quicker? Maybe someone else should have handled the watch.

    I am not going to read the whole thread, so if this was brought up I apologize. My question is how did you collect this data? Even without seeing the data, I can think of many problems with your method. Was it just you with a stopwatch? did you have some bag with a pressure sensor to stop the instance it was touched? I don't see some huge purely scientific study being done. You would first have to explain your method.

    Personally, I hope he wins 7 cy youngs to shove in the face of every douchebag Cubs fan that called him names for the past 4 years. But that's just me. I miss him already. :cry: Sorry, already addressed their response to that. But has he been booby-trapped? Or are failed booby-traps to blame for his injuries?

    Why? It wasn't a terrible contract. They did not go overboard. In fact Pavano had similar contracts from at least 2 other teams. Yes, in hindsight it is terrible, however he was the best pitcher available in that FA year. If he was able to pitch and be a solid #4 his contract would be fine. The Yankees had teams interested in trade talks for Pavano last year, before the TJ surgery! dude, pavano had pitched in seven major league seasons and had a grand total of two years with an ERA+ above 100, and one at 100. So basically he was average or worse than average in 5 of his 7 seasons in the big leagues. he had a lot of injury problems before 2003 as well. this was a bad signing that was based on one very good year that he had. you don't give $40m over 4 years to a guy who has been below-average most of his career and is a significant injury risk. just because multiple teams go overboard and offer big contracts after one big year (see: adrian beltre) doesn't mean that it was an acceptable move. it just means that multiple teams were stupid. I agree, but that is what the rate was then. Don't forget that the Red Sox, shortly after losing out on Pavano, went and gave Matt Clement a 3 year 25.5 million dollar deal. There were a lot of Yankees fans that were against getting Pavano, me included. My post was simply in response to the gentleman who acted like the Yankees went way out of line.

    How about not having him at ST? If he wasn't on the 40-man he wouldn't have to be there. Do I really want this guy having ANY interaction with the young pitchers?

    The difference is being on the 60-day DL opens a spot on the 40-man, but does not stop the player's MLB service time. Taking the minor league assignment would take time away from his MLB service time, thereby affecting his pension.

    The Yankees were not trying to cost Pavano money, they simply wanted to clear his roster spot and wash their hands of this disaster. Pavano's reason for not accepting this (according to his agent) was that accepting the minor league deal would affect his MLB service time and thereby cost him some of his pension! I find this laughable am thankful that Carla Pavana will be pitching elsewhere next season. That's a legitimate claim. He is entitled to that pension fund. Did the Yankees offer to cover the difference? It is a legitimate claim, and nothing the Yankees can do! I personally don't begrudge him one cent. It is actually better for the Yankees that he stay. Once ST ends, the Yankees will put him on the 60-day DL, thereby putting his 11M Salary on the insurance company. However, I don't feel an ounce of pity for the man. I will continue to compare him to Ed Whitson until I die!
