  1. I'm sitting at the airport waiting to board back to Chicago, but I just wanted to give you guys a heads up that we're putting up some final thoughts about the experience today. If you get a chance to check it out and/or comment on it, it would be much appreciated. http://fiveoutstogo.blogspot.com As a side note, since we got almost 2500 hits in just the last five days, we're going to continue posting the hundreds of pictures we got, and even some more of the video. We didn't quite expect such a turnout, so it looks like we'll try to keep it updated on a regular basis, maybe throughout the season. Thanks for checking it out this week.
  2. Having been down here this week, I can honestly say that Mark DeRosa has been the single nicest player on the entire Cubs team, and there isn't even a second place. When every other player blew off people asking for autographs (for which I don't fault them at all), DeRosa stopped every time and took a minute for a picture, an autograph, or just a handshake. The guy has immediately become the guy who I will be rooting for in every at bat, every game. As such, i REALLY hope everything's okay with him. He's a terrific guy.
  3. My thoughts exactly. I really don't get what people are dreading. Another month of what? Speculating? Just don't come in the thread if you don't want to speculate on it. Amirite? I agree completely. The "get it done NOW so that fans can be happy attitude" strikes me as eerily similar to the "let's get rid of Prior and Wood so the fans can move on" attitude.
  4. just a heads up- we added video today...
  5. New posts today, with a lot of pictures. If there's anything specific you guys want us to look for, just let me know. Here's the link again: http://fiveoutstogo.blogspot.com
  6. So aramis is here and taking bp. The long national nightmare is over.
  7. I think that's the worst blog name I can imagine. No way I'm going there. The name is actually reference to what my friend's husband said to me at that moment in 2003. I had to leave the bar in the ninth and take a nine block walk before I could come back to the bar and not punch him in the nose. (btw-no, I don't believe in curses, jinxes, or goats. At a time like that, though, it was any port in a storm).
  8. On the IPhone again, so I don't know if this is going to work, but my friends and I are down here and one of us has set up a blog. We'll be there each day this week and are posting pictures, so feel free to check it out. http://fiveoutstogo.blogspot.com
  9. My apologies for the misleading title. I had written significantly more on my Iphone, but for some reason it wouldn't go through. For some reason, it was logging me into the site, then immediately logging me out. And, to be honest, I didn't really want to try and write that much again on the IPhone keypad, so I gave up. There were a lot of things I got to see today, though. I'll write about them this afternoon. For now, though, I'm going to get out in the 70 degree weather.
  10. So I'm watching the Cubs take infield right now...anyone know why Ramirez isn't here yet?
  11. There need to be some basic premises for any argument so as to avoid the (justified) ridicule of someone: 1. Simply because something is accepted by the bulk of the baseball community does NOT make it inherently the right choice. Most baseball people ignored OBP until the last 5-7 years. Most people making decisions in baseball got into the league through luck, previous experience as a player, or the right connections. By no means does this guarantee they have any ability to judge the game in a superior way to anyone else. 2. Hypotheticals are not factual, nor should they ever be used to "prove" something. 3. Statistics require a valid sample size. If these rules were adhered to, this discussion could at least have some level of common ground.
  12. I really hope this team never fields a lineup that looks like this: C: Martin 1B: Lee 2B: Utley 3B: Ramirez SS: ARod LF: Bonds CF: Jones RF: Guerrero My GOD! WE WOULDN'T HAVE A LEADOFF HITTER!
  13. And your memory has the ability to file pitch counts, quantify location, and categorize pitches? For 600 unique at bats over the course of 5 months? Wow.
  14. And the broken record skips again. One more time: 1. Leadoff is not a position. 2. You don't know what Hendry wants any more than any other fan.
  15. Its a luxury to trade potentially three necessary contributors at positions of greater need for one upgrade at a possition of relative strength. This is about weighing the upgrade that Roberts would provide against the holes created by trading, say, Murton, Cedeno, and Gallagher. And, btw, I think two years of effective contributions from DeRosa should be enough to convince you that, at the very least, he's not going to fall back into his pre-Texas numbers.
  16. I think the point is not whether Roberts is an upgrade from DeRosa-he clearly is an upgrade. However, the Cubs need to consider whether or not the upgrade at 2B worth the downgrading of depth at SP, OF, and (most importantly) SS. IF Piniella was committed to starting DeRosa at SS and Roberts at 2B, this trade looks much better. But upgrading a position of relative strength, relegating a solid player to the bench (DeRosa) while still maintaining a MASSIVE hole in the lineup at SS and sacrificing the one player who could provide (potentially) acceptable numbers at the SS position in the trade (Cedeno) just flat out doesn't make sense. Offensive priority #1 should be removing Ryan Theriot from the everyday lineup. A trade for Brian Roberts does nothing to help this gaping hole, and at the very least should be relegated to the status of "nice luxury." By NO means should this be a priority.
  17. Whorish socialists? Is that like a prostitute with a tatoo of Lenin on her butt? Or do you mean socialites?
  18. According to Cubs.com, pitchers and catchers report on the 14th. Anyone know when the remainder of the team reports? I'm heading down there the 16th, and wouldn't mind checking out a practice or two.
  19. Why would he walk a lot more? The additional number of at bats he would get over a season would seemingly mitigate the number of times he leads off an inning. Furthermore, I would assume that pitchers would be much more likely to pitch to him if he lead off an inning than if there were runners on, assuming that the worst damage he could do would be a single run. I don't see how, over a the course of 600 ABs, the difference would be statistically significant. As far as I know, the only long-term study of the batting order issue was done by Baseball America, and I believe it was found that batting order is relatively insignificant. From what I remember, they basically advocated putting the players in order of OBP from highest to lowest, but seemed to say that in the grand scheme of things, there wasn't a significant difference regardless. Someone else could probably fill in the details better than me here.
  20. I may have been unclear in my original sentiment. The point was more that, when the substantive statistics behind the two hitters in question aren't significantly different, advocating one because he fits the mold of a "traditional" leadoff hitter doesn't make sense. Using position in the order as a defining characteristic is what is arbitrary, not the difference between the two spots in the order.
  21. Its not your opinion that is the problem. It is your lack of any substantive evidence whatsoever to back it up. Simply saying that "the Cubs want a new leadoff hitter" has absolutely no weight in proving that getting a new leadoff hitter would make any difference whatsoever. The leadoff position is utterly arbitrary. As I stated earlier, you might as well advocate for the Cubs to get a new #7 hitter. Its equally arbitrary and would have roughly the exact same effect on the lineup that a new #1 would have. EDIT As far as "what a message board is all about" is this: a message board is designed to facilitate an exchange of ideas in the hopes of attaining some level of truth. If all you want to do is advocate forcefully for your opinion without having to be questioned about your evidence, you're better off starting a blog. The real meaning behind a message board is exchange of ideas. You don't seem to want that.
  22. LaTroy Hawkins picks the first option.
  23. I would put as a priority the position of #7 hitter. We absolutely need someone to build a bridge from the #6 to the #8 hitter. Its an exceptionally important position, and we need someone who can fit this position. If we don't, we're in trouble.
  24. Greg Couch is one of those idiot sportswriters who think the Cubs would be better off trading Aramis Ramirez because his uniform isn't dirty enough. When you make him look stupid by using numbers, he'll reply with "I watch the game." He thinks Bedard is a massive upgrade over Rich Hill because he knows Bedard's name, nothing more. He's a fool.
  25. QFT. Look at all the others incriminated. What did most of them do? Keep quiet, admit it, or give a stern "This is a lie" quote and be done with it. Clemens is going through way more than he needs to be doing to defend his so-called innocence. Press conferences, televised speeches, and now a stat report? The more he fights it the more guilty he looks. And from what I've heard he's now bringing in other names to the argument. In that report doesn't he make comparisons of his stats to Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling during his alleged use period? He's trying to smear their names in the mud with his own. At least that's what I've heard. Roger Clemens has very quickly become the most annoying POS in baseball over the span of 1-2 years, and it all started with the "is he or isn't he" BS. Now it's this crap. What a tool. Not many of the others were facing a federal subpoena. This wouldn't go away no matter how quiet he stayed, so he might as well put up a defense.
