  1. This shouldn't be much of an issue in terms of developing position players for an organization like the Cubs. As we have seen in numerous previous drafts, there will always be players who fall either because of contract demands or because teams did not do their due diligence in determining whether or not a player could truly be pried away from a college commitment. Moreover, by focusing solely on the draft, you ignore the international market for players. A team with sufficient resources should be able to not only afford some of the big name talent in other countries, but also should have the scouting department that can unearth the relatively unknown players who have a world of talent, but can be signed for a relatively inexpensive cost. Finally, something needs to be said for coaching and development. While the Cubs have guys in this organization who have proven themselves to be competent and capable of effectively developing position players, I don't think they have had much of that in their past. I also think this is an area which the organization could stand to improve itself. I have some faith that the current crop of position prospects in the low minors will turn out some very good major league players, but there is still plenty of work ahead. Pitchers, on the other hand, we've done a bang-up job of scouting and developing over the past 10 years. Go figure. This makes sense. Plus you can't really count on the draft in baseball like other sports. I also think the Cubs develop good pitchers basically because its different position and the people evaluating and developing them are doing a better job
  2. Dempster needs to pitch well so we can win the series because I don't have much faith in Lilly on Thursday.
  3. I don't have any knowledge of this, so it is just a question. How much of this do you think has to do with the fact that we are drafting lower than we used to.
  4. It's really stupid when they claim copyright on something that I can't even purchase in the first place from them. It feels like they are trying to destroy a little bit of history when they do something like that. I know baseball is a business and they have a right to protect there product but it still doesn't seem right to me.
  5. That's not what I said. Read and understand. He changed the landscape/mindset of the franchise from "lovable losers" to one that doesn't accept losing as an option any more. We have the New York/Boston mindset we just don't have the championships - yet. Maybe the new owner will take the extra steps to do so. Even so, Dusty Baker was the manager of the 2003 team that changed Chicago's mind on what is acceptable. Whether you like it or not, whether he did it on his own merit or not, 2003 in my mind is when this franchise turned the corner and winning became the focus. This is a ridiculous idea. Do you seriously think that winning wasn't always something that was strived for by every front office/player/coach in cubs history? It's not like 2003 happened and they were like, "whoa, maybe winning should be a priority". Not to mention the Cubs have been fairly successful since 1984, I know they have had bad seasons since then but they haven't gone through nearly what they went through from the 40's to the sixties and then from the sixties to the eighties. Also I think the term lovable losers is a myth because the Cubs only really become popular when they start winning. I know I only see people with Cubs apparel during and after a year when they have been successful.
  6. Golf clap. I chuckled. I know, because Chicago hates black people like Michael Jordan, Ferguson Jenkins, Ernie Banks, Andre Dawson, Walter Peyton, Sammy Sosa (in the heyday), Billy Williams, Bill Clinton, and Ced Landrum. There's a difference between a bad black athlete and a good one. I'm not saying Chicago is any more racist then most major American cities, but most sports fans would cheer a Nazi if he was good at hitting the ball. This is pretty true. I remember my mother telling me when she worked in Alabama that one of her blatantly racist co-workers (I think it was a co-worker it could just have been certain people who were associated with her business) would tell her that black people are meant to be playing sports but not do any "intellectual jobs". Not saying that this has anything to do with Jaque or Dusty, but just because a minority is popular because of their athletic abilities doesn't mean that the people cheering for them aren't racist. There were Gladiators who were popular but that doesn't mean that they were considered equal. (Not saying all people look this way towards athletes but I am sure that there are some who do.)
  7. "Dude, it's like this. Sometimes, when you're fishing, you have to use the right lure for the right side of the lake. You'll have one side that's sunny, so that's where you have to use the worms. The other side, in the shade is where sausages work best. So since the pitcher was throwing sausages, Lenny was the right guy to put up there." :clapping: :rotfl:
  8. For some reason this thread reminds me of a baseball card I have of Luis Salazar (actually it was my dad's but he gave me all his baseball cards). The only reason I remember that card is because he had a cool mustache.
  9. Golf clap. I chuckled. I know, because Chicago hates black people like Michael Jordan, Ferguson Jenkins, Ernie Banks, Andre Dawson, Walter Peyton, Sammy Sosa (in the heyday), Billy Williams, Bill Clinton, and Ced Landrum. Wait a minute. I never said that Chicago hates black people. I said that Jones got treated like crap by the fans, which is true. I remember him being booed his first home series with the Cubs. And I thought that I heard a hand full of people made racist comments to him. No I don't think he was being booed because he was black. Maybe I shouldn't even have mentioned him being booed, looking back on it I don't know why I wrote that. All I was saying is I remember there being rumblings that he was hearing racist comments and death threats from some where. No I don't think at all that he was booed because he is black.
  10. Golf clap. I chuckled. 11. I absolutely think he is a terrible manager. I just think, in general, that managers and coaches get way too much blame.
  12. I think it's just a general logo used for all sports but they have a very similar logo where Herky is dressed in a wrestling getup. I think the poster Bob Sanders has the wrestling logo as his avatar.
  13. To be fair, Adam Dunn will likely hit one so far, it might as well be counted as to. As you already know, "He's country strong." Dunn for Hill Has there ever been a Cubs vs Reds series where Dunn didn't hit a home run. It seems like he always hits at least one.
  14. I didn't expect him to say that Neifi sucked out loud. Couldn't he have told a much more defensible lie like "Neifi deserved to be there," or something? Yeah you're probably right.
  15. In Theriot's defense, he doesn't seem like the type of guy who would slam a former teammate. Not to mention it would be very stupid of him to criticize anyone seeing as the reason he has a job is that he "plays the game the right way" mouthing off about a former teammate and claiming you should be playing ahead of him is not "playing the game the right way"
  16. I feel the same way. I don't care at all. I'm just glad we don't have to deal with him anymore. Same for Patterson. I don't care that he's coming back to Wrigley either. I only want them to fail the next three days. I can't really hate a man for being mentally challenged, it's not nice.
  17. I think what is so great about our team's pitching depth is, while it's a bunch of average pitchers, Lou is able to make these over reactionary moves. If one guy pitches terrible for a couple of starts, put someone else in there until they pitch terrible, once they pitch bad put the previous starter back, and then some. At least that is what I think Lou's mindset is when it comes to the way he has handled the pitching staff this year so far.
  18. If you mean solely the blame, I'll give you that. Baker has to take a lion's share of the blame though for overworking both Wood and Prior. As for Game 6 and 2004, he gets all the blame - it was his ship and he didn't bring it in. Good riddance (now if someone will kick Hendry out the door...) Wood had arm troubles before Dusty even got here. Dusty can only be blamed for not being smart enough to keep Wood from over pitching, but Woods arm was already messed up way before Dusty got here. Prior's injuries could have been do to Dusty's overworking him but it is really hard to say. He probably has been over pitched his whole life, way before he played professionally, and that itself could have taken a toll on his arm. I really can't blame a manager for pitching a guy once he gets to the majors, he's getting paid a lot to do it. Dusty sucked a lot, for the way he handled his line ups, playing people out of position and for his overall stubbornness but to give him a lot of blame for Wood's and Prior's injury issues I think is unfair.
  19. I was wondering the same thing myself. the only race thing I remember was him saying that black people play better in the heat. You don't remember his claims of incessant racial taunts against LaTroy Hawkins and Jacque Jones? Or his comments about San Francisco's racist tendencies when they ran him out of town? his defenses of LaTroy and Jacque were justified I remember Jacque getting treated like crap by the fans less than a month into his tenure with the Cubs. I though for sure he was getting racial crap from some people. I don't remember hearing anything about Hawkins and I vaguely remember something about SF but not much.

  21. Does anyone know what lies where this park was today.
  22. Please God let the Cardinals go on a losing streak that doesn't end How about they get contracted
