  1. When I saw the thread title, I thought it was actually about Mike Leake.
  2. our GM will be homegrown too, once the Ricketts wise up and put Roast in charge Roast would have the benefit of being able to consult NSBB prior to all decisions. But things would quickly deteriorate when his first signings turn out Eminem and D12. and his fellow GMs will be baffled when he begins proposing 3 way trades in which the Cubs end up with multiple superstars and the other teams involved get career minor leaguers.
  3. It's April, we're all used to it. Pretty sure he doesn't have an XBH. pretty sure his obp is over .500. 12-32, all singles and 1 run how is this possible? base hits and walks, thats what you want from your leadoff hitter.
  4. May as well just let Stevens go until his arm falls off at this point rather than waste the rest of the pen in case the Cubs decide to play baseball the next 2 days. Should have just left Coleman in for a few more innings.
  5. part of it is control and part of it is that he has fringy stuff and it's hard to feel confident in it, so he's going to nibble a lot. either way, he doesn't have much margin for error. basically casey coleman's ceiling is jason marquis and his floor is the multitude of pitchers who can barely touch 90 mph and routinely get hammered in the major leagues. So basically, once either Wells and Cashner are back, or Jackson or Davis come up, he'll be spending a a lot of time with my favorite prospects, JR Mathes and Austin B-D.
  6. I cant blame them for the Gorz trade, and hopefully, Doug Davis cant be much worse than Silva.
  7. It really isnt that inconceivable that wed have a solid, primarily home grown team. This could allow us to spend big on a 1B this offseason. 1B Fielder/Pujols 2B LaMahieu/Barney SS Castro 3B Vitters LF Soriano CF B Jackson RF Colvin C Soto Bench C Castillo IF Flaherty IF LaMahieu/Barney/M. Smith IF/OF LaHair OF Campana Pitching SP Z SP Garza SP Cashner SP McNutt SP Jay Jackson/Wells/Coleman BP Gaub BP Russell BP Carpenter BP Marshall BP Mamol 2 BP spots Mateo, Stevens, Searle, Parker, Cales, Smit, etc., or perhaps a healthy Angel Guzman I know, chances are that not all of these guys make it to the bigs, but each seems to have a legit shot, at least at this point.
  8. Soriano LF Jackson CF Byrd RF Let Fukudome back up all 3 position and let him start 3 games a week (one for each position) or something like that... Fukudome would still get a lot of ABs this way and everyone would be well rested throughout the season. Plus it let Colvin start everyday at AAA to work on his swing and whatnot. If they were to bring him up, I think this would be the smartest way to go, but he's only had 47 ABs. I agree he is absolutely, lights-out raking right now, but let the guy have 100 ABs at least before promoting him. That's about what Castro had last year in AA before being brought up. Castro was somewhat of a desperation move when we were really struggling for offense. While Byrd and Fukudome havnt been steller, they havnt been problems either.
  9. I'd suggest not telling people you think your team is cursed. I always find it funny how its OK to believe that a baseball team is cursed, but not that a fat bearded man in a red suit brings gifts to children or a giant rabbit gives them chocalate eggs.
  10. Jay Jackson very well might. By the time the next Russell/insta-loss spot comes up, it should be Jays throw day as well.
  11. I really think that Bretts best chance of being called up before September is if The Cubs are out of it and Fukudomes traded. Theyd then likely go with the 3 way outfield platoon, something like Sori-Byrd/Brett-Colvin/Byrd. if Colvin continues to struggle, he could either be sent to Iowa or just made the 4th outfielder. We could trade Byrd, however, Colvin would really need to prove himself, because aside from Jackson, we really dont have any big league ready backup for starting right fielder.
  12. In Daytona, Ha 1-4 with a 2B, Lake 1-5 with a 2B, and Burgess 2-4 with a 2B and HR.
  13. what i don't get is, how come you have this fetish for the brad snyders/micah hoffpauirs/scott lahairs of the world, yet you hate jr mathes? he's in his late 20s and occupying a roster spot just like those AAAA position players. Because its hard not to be excited by these guys OPSing in the 1.000s like its nothing, even though I know damn well that when they hit the majors they become, well, Micah Hoffpauir and Jake Fox. JR Mathes, on the other other hand just hangs out and is all kinds of mediocre. Pretty much everyone on the Iowa roster aside from Jackson, Carpenter, and Castillo, and to a lesser extent Smith, and Gaub can be given the old Crash Davis cliche, but its still fun to follow these guys when their mashing like this. And its hard to believe that at least one of these guys cant come to the big leagues and at least become Russell Branyan. Wouldnt you rather at least once give one of these guys a shot rather than scraping someone like Reed Johnson, Joey Gathright, or Daryl Ward out of the trash?
  14. He has to be in top 25 territory if he keeps it up. Damn. damn.
  15. Jay Jacksons final line: 5 IP 2 H 2 ER 1 BB 4 K. Not bad for his first game back. Wellington Castillo with a double, Montanez 3-3 with a grand slam, and LaHair was ejected by the 2nd base ump early on. Im trying to swear off AAAAers in their late 20's, but damn, Montanez and LaHair are looking good this season.
  16. Finally, an interesting pitching day. I'm excited to see how McNutt and Lopez do and even interested in Rosscup, too. And to be quite honest, TBA is probably the most exciting pitcher Iowa has at the moment. Cinsidering TBA is none other than Jay Jackson, whose off to a good start, hes by far the most exciting pitcher they have. Wellington Castillo also in Iowas lineup.
  17. Brett with a double. If he keeps it up, Marlon Byrd will be trade bait in the winter if not sooner.
  18. I don't think there were any realistic scenarios where Prince stayed, anyway. I just really hope he doesn't get traded at the deadline. He won't, unless something unforeseen happens. The Brewers are all in on this season. It's their best remaining chance of realizing the promise of all the young talent they had. They've got no farm system left, and Fielder is gone after this year and Grienke the next. It's now or never (or at least no time soon) for the Crew. Its looking more and more like Braun and Weeks will be this generations Molitor and Yount as 2 stars wasting away in an ocean of mediocre at best players for the Brewers.
  19. I always liked Fuld, and have no problem with whatever he becomes or doesn't become and have no regrets about using him as a throw in. The fact is, when it comes to big market teams like The Cubs, these types of players will always be 4th-5th outfielders or spare parts in AAA. More power to you Sammy. Go hit that ceiling and become a better defensive Scott Podsednik.
  20. What are the contract situations of these guys? Im assuming Kershaw has several years under team control, but Kemp, Ethier, and Billingsly have to be at least arb eligable soon. If this mess isnt sorted out, I wonder what kind of effect it will have on these guys.
  21. Why, is Alfred E. Neuman on the cover?
  22. Theres a book on this that came out last year called The Original Curse. A lot of people think that there was a lot of this going on back then because baseball was quite profitable to owners and gamblers, but the players were the ones who werent fairly compensated.
