  1. Got to love the "offensive wunderkind" tag given to Baez. Right up their with Soler's monster tools.
  2. Indians Claim Scott Maine By Ben Nicholson-Smith [August 29 at 1:19pm CST] The Indians announced that they claimed left-hander Scott Maine off of waivers from the Cubs. The Cubs designated Maine for assignment two days ago to create 40-man roster space for catcher Anthony Recker.
  3. Lest we forget, we got a top 50 prospect with Reed Johnson as a sweetener.
  4. May as well just start a catch all game thread like the non-Cubs game thread.
  5. Holy cow. In other news, Daytona will be rained out. I don't know how much longer their season even is, but shouldn't the consider shuffling some of the more relevant prospects around to Tenenessee and Peoria, where they actually play more than once per week? The guys who should really be considered are Baez, Villanueva, and Torreyes. There's Whitenack, but he's on the DL.
  6. Damn, I tuned out after the Hinshaw suckfest and missed Joe Mather's pitching debut.
  7. The fact is there are a limited number of MLB television play-by-play jobs, and a ton of guys that would love to take them, and I'm not just talking about message board posters and radio callers here. Anyone who managed to hold down one of the most sought after jobs in sports for as long as Hawk Harrelson has suggests that he has clearly been doing a lot of things right, though none of those things has actually ever been witnessed. I'm sure that a lot of people would like to take his place, but the White Sox fans seem to like him, mostly anyway, and more importantly, ownership does. In Hawk's job, you can get by on that alone. A GM's responsibilities tend to be a bit more involved.
  8. Yeah the reality is that we're posting on message boards and he's had a long-time career on many levels of baseball, but in you go ahead and keep believing that you're smarter than he is and he's just been lucky all of his life. So you think that Jim Hendry is definitely smarter than everyone else in the world because he's had that career? Or at least smarter than everyone posting on message boards and not working in baseball? He made some awful decisions, and a lot went wrong for him, but the fact is that there are 30 MLB GM jobs, and a ton of guys that would love to take them, and I'm not just talking about message board posters and radio callers here. Anyone who managed to hold down one of the the most sought after jobs in sports for as long as Hendry did suggests that he was clearly doing a lot of things right, though we might not know just what.
  9. That's because he's terrible. A young Koyie in the making. AKA a run of the mill noodle-bat back up catcher who won't make or break anything, and will stick around until the next Steve Clevenger comes through the system and/or this one hits free agency.
  10. Did we ever learn why Antigua earned that demotion to Peoria, and why he hasn't been promoted again?
  11. Over editing, something ended up left out. I don't need to be an expert at analyzing players to know that a move to the Dodger Stadium from Fenway isn't going to do a hitter any favors. The only possible benefit would be getting a few extra games at Coors and Chase which is canceled out by more games at both PetCo and AT&T, but none of that is as important as going from playing half the time at one of the top 5 hitters parks to one of the 5-10 most pitcher friendly. You do realize that Adrian Gonzalez played and raked for many many years in Petco Park, correct? Which is why when he was traded to Boston, the general consensus was that he was traded to Boston, he'd become super human. No question that A Gon has proved he can hit in that division, though who knows what would have happened had he played out his prime at Fenway. I'm more interested in how the change will effect Josh Beckett
  12. No problem with Ryan Theriot types coming through the system as inexpensive role players. It's only when they, the manager, and the fans all treat them as more than that that it becomes a problem.
  13. Sure there's not a reason I can think of to prevent him from getting called up. It's late but IIRC he should be on the 40man. He's been hitting well. He shouldn't take time away from Jackson, but yes he's a likely call up in September. Why not? He was really pouty on twitter every time someone else was called up from IA so I cant speak to any possible personal issues, but I don't know of any. Not take away playing time from him, but between Jackson and DeJesus, they can't play everyday. Unlike guys like Jackson and Vitters, he doesn't have to play everyday, as this is the role he'd ultimately end up with if he sticks.

  15. Dave Sappelt past 10 days: .359/.395/.615. Since the All Star Break: .301/.331/.448. Any reason for him not to be a September call-up? He could split time between CF and RF vs. lefties, against which he has a .331/.365/.452 on the year.
  16. With the Shawon-Junior-O-Meter at .300 and a .794 OPS, should he be given another crack at Boise?
  17. Soriano was the opposite of a discount. If my memory serves, both the Angels and Phillies had similar 5-6 year offers on the table before Hendry outbid them and himself with the 8 year deal. And to be honest, as ugly as the contract was, I don't think that anyone could have predicted him to decline as quickly as he did after 2009. Anytime you give a 30 something a deal of that length, you're basically paying for 4-6 prime years if your lucky, and then the hope that they don't fall too far off a cliff after that.
  18. At 22 years old, I'm ready to leap frog him to Tennessee just to see what happens, as it doesn't look like Alcantara will be back this season and Lake or Watkins could be bumped to Iowa.
  19. Hanley (28) has looked like his old self since coming to the Dodgers, Crawford (31) was as well when healthy this year. A Gon's (30) has been pretty huge as well, and a change from the AL East to the NL West could be huge, assuming that he can stay healthy. With the possible exception of Beckett, and he's only 31-32, it's not like these are a bunch of over the hill, declining players heading off to die. These guys should dominate the NL for the next 3-5 years. Of course the same was said about the Phillies not too long ago. Why would moving to the NL West help AGone? I won't help him. If anything, it'll hurt him, for a number of clear reasons. Saying it will help him was ignorant at best. I actually very much meant Beckett there. Which is true for obvious reasons.

  21. Good God, their payroll could likely buy a small continent or a large country. This will not be a good era to be in the NL West.
