People want the deal consummated so there isn't a risk that Zambrano will be lost to free agency! We won't know the exact cost until a deal is done; the negotiations aren't public and fans don't have the option to submit an offer. At this point, with all the other money that has been committed this offseason, the Cubs would be foolish to quibble too much over cost. That's not to say that negotiations aren't in order (because no GM wants to pay a $1.00 more than it will take to get the player to sign) but this team is built to make a run within the next 3 seasons (the same number of guaranteed years Piniella is signed to manage--he also has a 4th option year). Losing the ace of the staff severely limits the plan by handicapping an already questionable pitching staff. If the Cubs are serious about winning, and I think they are, Hendry will make sure that Z is signed.
