  1. It all starts at the top. Mediocrity is accepted as long as the Cubs continue to make money for the Tribune. The single fact that MacPhail (face of the Tribune) gave Hendry an extension proves this fact. Let's follow the chain of command: Players have no fire to win and make excuses with they loose (2004 season). Coaches set the mood in the clubhouse. Coaches make excuses all the time (players hurt, no left handed batting practice pitcher) and don't get the best out of their players (Patterson). GM didn't address the issues of the personel (Prior, Wood injuries). Can not judge talent. Doesn't fire manager despite no intention of keeping him on staff for another year. President (MacPhail) rewards the loosing record of the Cubs by giving Hendry an extension. Always thinks of new ways to make money for the Trubine so he keeps his job regardless of Win/Lossess. So as you can see it all stems from the top. Sure the payroll is high but with incompetent people in place we will continue the World Series drought.
  2. Does anyone know who threw out the first pitch today?
  3. Hell froze over: Pierre hit a homer Neifi sat the bench Blanco tripled Mabry doubled and drove in a run And the Cubs won!!!
  4. Besides waving to the camera while on his cell phone which I can't stand...that kid was great. I'm sure the "red coats" came down and said don't hold up that poster. As we know if the Cubs are loosing in the 7th, 8th or 9th inning the game is over so he probably said, "F iT!!" and kept the sign up!!
  5. [quote="gus_dog I love it when folks say the Trib doesn't want to win. They want to win very badly. They just don't know how to go about it in a consistent manner. How do you back up this statement? The Tribune is a faceless corporation who's goal is to make money for investors. As long as the stock goes up the investors are happy. If the Cubs make money for the Tribune it doesn't matter if they win or lose. Win's and losses are not listed in the Tribune Annual Report.
  6. We are mostly in agreement. I point at Wrigley not as an excuse for losing or an inanimate object but as the source of revenue that is padding the pockets of the Tribune. Even though MacPhail has failed miserably as President he get's a pat on the back because he has squeezed Wrigley for every possible cent, not for running a successful baseball team. It all starts at the top.
  7. No [deleted] the building can't pitch, etc. And I'm not making excuses for bad baseball, etc. You are missing my point. Recap: The reason why the Tribune/MacPhail aren't motivated to win is because people happily flood Wrigley Field simply because it's Wrigley Field. And the Tribune/MacPhail have absolutely no motivation to put a winning team on the field because Wrigley continues to sell out and be extremely profitiable for the Tribune. Thus I have a love/hate for Wrigley because I want a World Series right now!!!!
  8. As a side note...the Marlins have a better record than the Cubs. $80M difference.
  9. You are absolutely correct!! As much as I hate to admit it we need to learn a lot from the Sox. They could have have the Cubs attitude but they traded for Thome. The only changes we make are bleachers and cell phones in the dugout.
  10. I repectfully disagree with you that the Trib knows a winning team is more profitable than a loosing team. The Trib/MacPhail rewarded Hendry with an extention after a joke of a season last year. The reason that MacPhail still has a job has absolutely nothing to do with wins/losses. If the Tribune felt that wins bring profit they would evaluate MacPhail accordingly. Again keep in mind that Tribune is not a person...who follows the ups and downs of the teams record. Only the ups and downs of the stock.
  11. Nice replies...But I think some of you are missing my point. Firing Baker, emptying the players, firing Hendry are all symptoms of the larger issue, MacPhail, The Tribune and Wrigley. The fact that we are owned by the Tribune and the Cubs are one of the most recognizable sports fans SHOULD be our advantage. There is no reason why the Cubs aren't on the same page of the Yankess on every level. The Tribune is just one big Corporation who cares about sending a positive Annual Report to shareholders. There isn't a Win/Loss column in financial reports. Untill either the Tribune pulls an "Enron", sells the Cubs, or builds a new balpark where fans come to watch a winning team our chances of a World Series are far away.
  12. I've always been against the argument that as long as the Cubs play at Wrigley the Cubs will never win the World Series. After the last two years I am beginning to have a change of heart. There is no way in hell that the Cubs will win a World Series with MacPhail/Hendry at the helm. Hendry is a disaster (no brainer) and MacPhail is a corporate man who is doing a great job for the Tribune ($$). As long as Wrigley continues to pad the Tribune's pockets why would they ever fire MacPhail. The fact that Hendry received an extension proves that winning doesn't matter to MacPhail. What I love about Wrigley is what I am beginning to despise because all I see now is the Tribune's cash cow. If the Tribune really cared about winning our payroll would be up towards the Yankee payroll. As long as Wrigley keeps drawing the Tribune/Cubs have no motivation to win. Thus our lives are miserable.
  13. You got that right...thought it was a great question. Don't want to wait till next week for the answer.
  14. Here's a question for anyone who is good with at math? Can someone calculate this... If....everyone else in the division plays .500 baseball are the Cubs already mathmatically eliminated AND if not assuming everyone else in the division goes .500 what record do the Cubs need to have in order to win the division? Hendry believes we are not out of it and you hear the "Houston did it last year" BS. Does anyone know how to calculate this?
