  1. I like Frank Robinson, but he has split-level dog house, and Church has been in the master bedroom for some time. He makes boneheaded plays in the field, and has a Chad Curtis approach to proseletyzing in the clubhouse that has alienated several teammates. That and his rather unfortunate comments about Jews have made the ice he skates on here in DC paper thin. He can probably be obtained in a trade, but he comes with two carry-on pieces of luggage. Baseball Prospectus projected equivalent OPS for various outfielders: Church .804 Jones .776 Murton .768 Hairston .736 Pierre .716 Pagan .702
  2. Juan does only have 9 career dingers, but the point is still valid. Before tonight's game he blamed the "long infield grass" for his problems, but opposing pitcher's are getting him to bite on high fastballs. Can't blame the groundskeeper for that.
  3. Except for 65 innings at Iowa last year, and a few more this season, Hill has never shown very good control. His limited stretches of good control may be more attributable to luck and/or a small sample size than any real improvement. Still, he's a lefty with a mouth-watering K rate and there just aren't very many of those lying around. He's too old to be prospect but too young to be done, a situation many of us can sympathize with. I think he'll be a 4th starter, but probably not with the Cubs.
  4. All this talk highlights the difficulty with trading Maddux. I was going to write a post elsewhere about why trading him would be a good idea, but if that would mean putting the Osprey Killer in the rotation, I can't get very enthusiastic.
  5. The Cubs need to start dividing their organization into two columns: guys who will be on their next pennant winner (column A) and guys who won't (column B). I definitely agree with Vance's comment that if the Cubs were in contention acquiring Tejada now would make sense, but under the circumstances they certainly shouldn't trade any column A guys to get him. The good news is that Tejada is on the O's, a team with minimal front office acumen -- maybe the Cubs can steal him. The bad news is that Tejada was 30 on opening day and for a variety of reasons is likely being a little more careful with those, uh, vitamin B-12 injections than he was last year. It's not certain that even if the Cubs got him he would be in column A.
