  1. Hmm, Ron Potesta=Cubway? Just guessing here. Cubway has been a member here since February. I don't think he's Potesta.
  2. I think a lot will depend on how he performs when he returns from his injury.
  3. Daniel Bard, Drew Stubbs and Ian Kennedy will all be top picks from college.
  4. Here's what I wrote about him after the draft: Round 16: J.R. Mathes Western Michigan University LHP Scouting Report: Senior lefty listed at 6’3” 205, which for a lefty is certainly good size. He works with a sinking fastball that touches 89 and due to his age is unlikely to improve. But even with a fastball that only reaches the high-80’s, he was successful last year nonetheless. He went 6-4 last season as the Western Michigan ace while posting a 3.64 ERA, three complete games and 94 innings pitched. His peripheral numbers were good as well: he whiffed 87 batter while only walking 19 and his sinker worked as evidence by his 4 HR’s allowed. He tossed a shutout and an eight inning 2 run effort against Purdue. Because he doesn’t blow batters away, he’ll need to rely on keeping the ball in the park and making the opposition put the ball in play. As a senior, he should be an easy sign. Personal Analysis: Low-risk, low-reward. Mathes isn’t a guy you project for a frontline starter and as a senior he’ll need to move fast. Due to the cubs outstanding core of arms he may find himself in the bullpen. Making the majors would be an overcoming of odds, and he might find himself as a journeyman in a few years. Mathes was excellent facing younger hitters in Boise last year, so it's good to see him pitch well against a more age appropriate hitters. I think his future is probably in the bullpen. He's still fairly old, but he's a lefty, so he'll get his chance.
  5. I'll second that opinion. Hard to know if Sisco's composure will hold over the long haul. A tall, hard-throwing lefty is going to give the league real trouble the first time around because of his novelty, much like Dontrelle's unorthodox style did in 2003. I'm not convinced, after the league catches up with Sisco, that he'll mature as Dontrelle has done after the league caught up with him. The odds of a young, immature pitcher that hadn't thrown a pitch above Low A making it in the majors were very slim when Hendry left him unprotected. Except that he is just 22 years old and is likely to improve. Like Juan Cruz was likely to improve? Overall, Hendry has a good track record on which pitching prospects to keep and which to trade. Cruz is a single example; most 22 years olds end up getting better. What high profile pitching prospects has Hendry let go? Beltran was injured, and we don't know about Jones yet. The only other one I can think of off the top of my head is Willis, and letting him go was a mistake.

  7. I think it was clear that Sisco was going to be taken, and it was clear that Nolasco was unlikely to be taken.
  8. Sisco leads the KC bullpen with 16 innings with an ERA of 1.13 and a WHIP below 1. Meanwhile, Carlos Vasquez is no longer in the system and John Koronka is 1 and 3 with a 7.32 ERA in Iowa.
  9. E-Patt made BA's Prospect Hot List. Here's the comment: http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/minors/hotsheet2005.html

  11. Last years results. Treebeard destroyed the field last year. He was followed by IMB and CubsInNC.
  12. It's a new season of HACKING MASS, the game where you pick the worst players. Please post the name of your team in this thread. I'll try and do a better job keeping up with the results this year.
  13. And the story takes yet another curve: http://miva.jacksonsun.com/miva/cgi-bin/miva?NEWS/news_storyV2005.mv+link=200502126941566
  14. Well, if they're still as excited about him to dedicate half of a brief article on Cubs.com to Raul after two additional years were added on to his already mature age, they must like what they've seen. Well his Summer numbers sure are quite impressive. http://www.baseballamerica.com/cgi-bin/statsfindplayer.pl?player=valdez%2C+raul
  15. By far the two best. How do you do this one?
  16. Yes it is a baseball think factory site and I agree that it is a fine site. Currently, they are moving to a new site so it should be even better although one of their top sabermetrics writers is no longer there.
  17. If Mitre struggles (so far so good) with Guzman and Prior still out who is next in line to recieve a rotation spot?
  18. Clement will be a free agent after the season; do you see the cubs making an attempt to resign him?
  19. You can view previous drafts at http://sports-wired.com and BA subscribers can view previous draft info on BA.
  20. http://Brewerfan.net- is one of the best out there. Also covers the MLB draft. Message board included. http://Battersbox.ca- is a site devoted to the Jays, but some of the articles are non-Jays related and are good reads. Lively discussion from readers in the comments section of the articles. http://Orioleshangout.com- has a lot of Orioles info, but it is pay. Message board included. http://Twinsgeek.com- is a nice site devoted to the Twinkies. http://Newbergreport.com- has top notch coverage of the Rangers system with regular reports. The http://all-baseball.com network has blogs for a bunch of different teams, two are for the cubs, Will Carrol and Chirstian Ruzich (sp?). If your looking for non-team specific sites, I would suggest the http://baseballthinkfactory.com network as well as the promising http://hardballtimes.com. Two other good general sites are: http://baseballmusings.com and http://futilityinfielder.com.
