    If a guy who puts up a 107 OPS+ in his only full season as a Cub and fills in at CF even though he would be the first one to tell you its not his natural position is your most hated Cub ever, you haven't been following the team very long. Buckle up the chinstrap, because you're going to a lot, lot, lot worse players.

    You guys and your sacred cows and your designated villians are hilarious. JJ went 2-5 today. Ohman was brutal, but if anyone deserves to be ranted and railed against for today's performance it should be Marshall by a landslide. The starting pitching, sans Zambrano, has been uninspiring as of late. I now return you to your regularly scheduled Jacque bashing.

    About as good as they were last night. With the exception of Z, they've been saving our rotation's butts.

    Not really, their run differential has always been really good (for the NL), it just took a while for their W/L record to catch up.

    Not really...the bullpen has been solid without him. Dempster, Marmol, Wuertz, Howry, Ohman, and Wood. Don't need Eyre too much. It would help, but definitely no desperation. I'd prefer to see Murton step up his play. We've been sucessfull by ridiculously overusing Marmol, and I'm not counting on Kerry for anything. We need Eyre to start eating up some innings, if nothing else.

    At this point, I'm eagerly awaiting the trading deadline to pass without any more moves. Every trade rumor that leaks out scares me more and more. Everytime I hear a "breaking news" flash on my sports talk radio, my stomach sinks. And the rumor circulating here in Texas is Laird and Gagne for Pie + pieces.

    Salty is likely moving to 1B to replace Texiera. They don't want to wear his bat down by playing C everyday in the Texas heat.

    The most substantial rumor coming out of Dallas is the Braves: Salty + Elvis Andrus + Matt Harrison.

    He's got miles and miles to go to catch up to Prince. Even if the Cubs take the division, it won't be by enough for the voters to discredit Prince as a "good player on a bad team".

    I have a feeling that Floyd is about to go to the DL, and I'd much rather see Stairs in RF than DeRosa.

    With the lineup we've been trotting out there with Lee on suspension and Floyd day to day, it couldn't have come at a more opportune time.

    Seriously, I hope the Wrigley fans give him a 10 minute standing ovation the first day he takes the mound. Sadly, it will probably be the opposite.

    Regression to the mean. He's far, far more likely to produce in the second half at the level he's produced at over his previous 4000 at bats than he is to produce at his level of production over his last 200. if only baseball were hard and fast as statistics would like you to believe Yet, most people had no problem believing Michael Barrett was going to have a 2nd half regression to the mean when they were storming the castle with torches and pitchforks after Hendry traded him (and rightfully so). I guess statistics only apply to annoited messageboard favorites and not messageboard villains. So it is incorrect to think that he will hit better than his career averages in the second half just because he hit so much worse in the first half. Funny, I could have sworn that was exactly what people were arguing when we traded Barrett. Again, I guess things apply different to annoited messageboard heros vs. messageboard villains.

    If the choice is between Marquis and Dempster, I'll go with Marquis.

    the players only have a Ken Caminiti-like future to look forward to, so I hope it was worth it for them Steroids were the least of Caminiti's demons.

    I believe steroids are/were pretty much rampant since the 80's, so it's hard for me to say that Bonds had much of a competitive advantage over a field of athletes who were all using steroids. I don't know if Bonds is the greatest homerun hitter in history, because it's virtually impossible to truly compare eras. (How many of Babe Ruth's homeruns came off of pitchers who were working on their 157th pitch of the game?) What I do know is Bonds is maybe the most unique power hitter in the history of the game. There have been lots of pure power sluggers with big swings who swung off their heals. Bonds is maybe the greatest combination of power and plate discipline that the game has ever seen. Aside from 750 HR's, he's working on his 9th season of OBP over .450. Yes, that's due to a lot of IBB, but even those IBB's were "earned" because pitchers knew that you couldn't pitch around him and get him to swing at bad pitches. That said, I do agree that he's still a jerk of the highest order. But I guess I'm not a typical fan in that I really don't look for sports for heroes and villains. There's too many corrupt politicians and world leaders that are far more deserving of that ire and energy for me to devote it to a meathead athlete.

    And if Murton wants to get called up, perhaps it would help if he became defensively adequate at several positions.
