  1. Between Bryant's debut in Boise and seeing how Olt and Vitters get into the lineup, this could be an interesting day on the farm.
  2. Cubs are going to have to allocate resources to fix their bullpen in the offseason somehow. If part of that allocation has to be 1.2 years of a 1 WAR 37-38 year old left fielder into a 24 year old cheap young bullpen arm with several years of cost control like Whitley, that sounds good to me. That's even assuming we don't free up any money from Soriano's salary to allocate elsewhere.
  3. On Jonah Keri's Grantland podcast released last night, he said the Cubs had liked Grimm for a while and had singled him out. I guess because of the low walk rates and his feel for pitching? Maybe because they think he could add a cutter like Wood?
  4. It's the right move, but Grimm might crack open a few beers tonight after going from the starting rotation on a contender to being assigned to the farm of a sub-.500 organization this afternoon.
  5. Probably a slight edge over Pierce. They're pretty similar, IMHO.
  6. I almost hope that Grimm goes to Iowa just so they would have one pitcher worth following this year. I do wonder how they'll handle him considering he was suffering from forearm soreness/fatigue in his last start before the break.
  7. Especially since the PTBNL is reportedly dependent on the Rangers season (or Garza signing an extension with them).
  8. Somehow Braun was able to plea a deal for only 65 games. Jeff Passan ‏@JeffPassan 1m Already some anger in baseball that Braun got only 65 games: "They gave that piece of (expletive) a deal?" one person said.
  9. The good news on Grimm: I believe by July he was leading AL rookie SPs in quality starts. Bad News: He was pulled in his last start with tightness in his forearm.
  10. Jeff Passan ‏@JeffPassan 1m Final deal: Cubs trade Matt Garza to the Rangers for Mike Olt, C.J. Edwards, Justin Grimm and PTBNL. I know a lot of Ranger fans that are going to be pissed about this package for a rental.
  11. I do wonder who sticks at 3rd between Vitters and Olt. I'm guessing Vitters goes to LF in Iowa?
  12. Evan Grant ‏@Evan_P_Grant 31s I've heard 2 version of Cubs-Rangers deal: One with Olt, Edwards and Rougned Odor. Another with Neil Ramirez substituted for Odor.
  13. Jeff Passan ‏@JeffPassan 5m Source confirms @Ken_Rosenthal report that Matt Garza is headed from the Cubs to the Rangers. Jeff Passan ‏@JeffPassan 1m Mike Olt is going to the Cubs.
  14. Wolf was only making a spot start as Yu and Ogondo come back later this week. They wanted the Garza trade done by today, so could start him instead. I think we got the best offer from the Rangers that we're going to get, particularly if Garza makes another start for the Cubs. The "pressure" on the Rangers to make a deal diminishes over time as their pitchers start rejoining the team and each potential start by Garza comes and goes.
  15. I told myself that last year regarding a Garza trade. Right before he landed on the DL.
  16. I thought Randy Galloway was their Phil. Yeah, maybe he's more like the Sullivan, but dumber.
  17. If it's with the Rangers, yes. They want Garza to pitch Saturday Night.
  18. I wonder if we might throw in Vitters in a package involving Olt as a mutual change of scenery deal. Otherwise one of them will have to change positions when Vitters gets back to Iowa.
  19. Olt's potential is worth a throw in as a dirt cheap buy low candidate, but I don't think Jed/Theo have any systematic formula to turn Olt around that the Rangers don't (see Julio Borbon). It's not like the Rangers system hasn't developed talent.
  20. I really haven't been expecting a huge haul for Garza, but I have to say I would be pretty disappointed if we just got a handful of high ceiling A ball pitchers like C.J. Edwards and Luke Jackson. Between the #2 pick in the draft and the Garza trade, I was hoping our pitching in the higher levels wouldn't still be garbage by the time August rolled around.
  21. Tepesch just wasn't very highly thought of as a prospect. He's got four solid pitches, but none of them really plus. He didn't strike out many people in the minors. His strikeout and walk rates in the majors are actually an improvement from his AA numbers last year. He kinda came out of nowhere in Spring Training to win the 5th spot in the rotation. I guess Ranger fans are skeptical that his major league performance will be sustainable once batters face him more.
  22. Even coming off TJS, Cubs would have to be be throwing in Gregg or Sweeney or something to get Feliz for a 3 months rental of Garza.
  23. Then claims all the Rangers would give up are a couple of 24 year old pitchers in AA.
