  1. On the bright side, Cedeno and Murton are certain to get plenty of playing time in Spring Training! Dusty loves to play the kids in Spring Training!
  2. baker seems to be the last person to realize that this current group of stiffs isn't winning, hasn't won and will continue to not win. since when does playing your worst players = trying to win? This is infuriating. When teams are out of contention in September, they play the kids so that they can better evaluate what role they can play on the next season's team. It provides the GM with better information for the offseason. It's what every freaking team in baseball does. Hairston and Perez were backups at the start of the season, and they've done little to demonstrate that that's not their ideal role on any competetive team. So basically we're only giving partial playing time to two of the organization's best prospects so that our veteran backups can continue to demonstrate why they should be backups.
  3. Veteran ESPNers will remember that Bellhorn can't hit when he plays 3B, only 2B
  4. Neifi had a 13 pitch at-bat earlier this year. That's surprising, but it's very exceptional. The only non-pitcher on the Cubs with a lower p/pa ratio is Adam Greenberg, and it's not really fair to blame him for his 1.0 p/pa. Neifi has the fifth lowest p/pa in the majors among qualified batters. It is possible to be successful having that kind of approach at the plate, but you have to be a freak like Vlad Guerrero (one of 4 players in the majors who sees fewer pitches than Neifi).
  5. Though the game was lopsided at the end, the key moment came in the sixth when shortstop Ronny Cedeno's run-scoring single capped a nine-pitch at-bat that gave the Cubs a 4-3 lead. Cedeno went 2-for-4 with two RBIs Has Neifi Perez had a 9 pitch at-bat this year?
  6. If the Cubs dumped Rothschild the new pitching coach would be Dick Pole and Sonny Jackson would replace him as bench coach.
  7. Dusty: Now Scott, I like to have rookies sit on the bench and observe the vets, I'll probably be using you as a pinch-hitter primarily. Scott: But Dusty, I'm 33--not really a rookie. Dusty: 33? Dude, you're starting at third today.
  8. This is largely correct, except you'd have to get the New York media to promise to never say anything mean about Dusty, ever.
  9. has a broadcaster ever jumped from the booth to the dugout b4? Interesting question. Lou Boudreau, Jerry Coleman, Larry Dierker . . .
  10. I agree that it's not a good idea to spend millions for multi-year contracts for relievers. But, for the record, we didn't trade value for David Weathers--we traded the fat slob who Carlos refers to in my signature. Weathers was having the best year of his career when the Cubs acquired him, but in hindsight it looks like we got him just when he was going in to a dead arm phase, and he was never as effective for the Cubs as he was for the Brewers. As for Remlinger, it's a shame that a combination of injuries and managerial misuse led to the organization getting less than its money's worth.
  11. Aren't they going to DL Stormy Weathers? Kearns may be taking his spot.
  12. I don't see Dusty replacing Dempster with Williamson. I do see Dusty throwing Williamson 3 days in a row and shredding his elbow.
  13. Starter: Bill North Pitcher: Orval Overall Bench: Mike Lum
  14. The last brothers to play together for the Cubs were Rick and Paul Reuschel, although you can't really say that Paul "starred" in any sense. I'm going to see the Chiefs on April 30, so I hope they hold off on the Daytona promotion for a little bit.
  15. Congrats! You help make this site the best source for Cubs news on the net.
