  1. If he costs $10m, I'd do it in a heartbeat. If they could deal Jones and get a pitcher, then play Pie in CF and have Murton spell Barry and you have yourself a killer offense.
  2. Any player with good raw tools can be compared to Sosa and Vlad, but the problem is that few players reach that level. I don't think anyone is good enough to know which guys free-swinging, toolsy outfielders will be the few who reach that plateau. Yeah, but Vladdy was a 1000+ OPS guy in the minors. By age 21 he was already a very good major league. Pie has no chance of being like Vlad.
  3. I didn't realize he'd reached favorite player status with you. I like having prospects, but I don't think any of the Cubs' deserve to be favorites at this point. It would be sweet if he was able to translate his minor league success to the majors. If the Cubs got 800-850 OPS seasons out of Patterson and Pie before the current veteran core falls apart, they'd be an excellent run scoring machine.
  4. It definitely would be cool if he did. But I'd trade him for better talent if somebody wanted him.
  5. Does that mean if he makes it big, you're going to start hating him because he sold out and is no longer a cool obscure band? I understand what you're saying.
  6. I can't endorse any deal in which Patterson is traded. And yes, I know Kendrick is a better prospect than him. I'm just stubborn. I really don't get the lust over Patterson. He's far from an untouchable.
  7. They are "trying to get rid of Manny" because Manny has asked to be traded out of Boston, again. He's asked about 4 times now. It's not just a matter of a guy having a bit of an attitude, it's a case of the guy not wanting to be on the team. To be fair to Manny, he's been a good sport about it the last few years. As long as they make an attempt in good faith to trade him, he works hard for them. That's debatable.

  9. They had carjackings back then? I can't imagine that holding up as "true self-defense" with any reasonable jury. Doesn't going back to your car to grab a gun and chasing after the guys negate any thought of self defense?
  10. You guys are quickly jumping to conclusions about Gil Meche. You see his numbers and you quickly don't want him. The thing you're not seeing is the potential he has to succeed. He has a very live arm, still pretty young, sharp breaking curveball, and a potential Jason Schmidt changeup in the mix. I see his potential for more of a reason to sign him rather than his numbers. Unfortunately numbers mean a lot more than potential, especially when you've been around as long as him.
  11. Indeed. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/baseball/mlb/11/28/igawa.bid/index.html
  12. Let's stay realistic please. why is that unrealistic? Wells is in his contract year, quite possibly will leave Toronto anyway, they have a right-handed dominated lineup and lots of holes. Cubs or Blue Jays?
  13. I don't see how this eliminates them from Schmidt talks.
  14. Rule them out, period. Are they going to abandon Asia again? No, they just hired Steve Wilson, who lives in Taiwan, to restart their Asian scouting. They apparently don't see Igawa as worth the investment. I can certainly respect that decision.

  16. Maybe he doesn't feel different or special, instead, he feels the coach has his head up his butt and is worried about stuff that does not matter.
  17. I'm just not convinced the future has been expensed. The talent is all still intact. And if any of those guys were any good, they will also be cheap for a good while longer, so that value can makeup for overpaying older guys. There is definite risk to the future. But you can't win in this game without taking risks. You have to be in it to win it.
  18. Bruce says this isn't true. Then again, Gammons is on the 20 dollar bill so it's hard to believe he's not right. I'm perplexed here. I don't believe an offer was made. Remember, agents like to float a lot of things, especially to get the market going. Do you believe that they are interested enough to make an offer in the 3-4 year range at close to 15 per year? Have you heard anything about the Igawa bid? thanks Bruce. I don't believe the Cubs will go $15 mil per year for Schmidt. Don't get too excited worrying about Igawa. He'll land elsehwere. Are we going to be seeing Gil Meche and Jason Marquis next year? Because that wouldn't be cool.
  19. I wasn't paying very close attention. But Gammons never said 3/44 himself. ESPN could put up any graphic they want when he speaks. That doesn't mean he endorses the graphic. I just heard him sort of non chalantly mention a 3 year offer by the Cubs, but I couldn't tell if he was just stating that there are reports of such an offer, or that he believes there was an offer.
