Reminds me of the Cubs "future" rotation a couple years ago that included: Wood Prior Z Guzman Nolasco/Hill/Pinto/Mitre

They've only had 3 picks to deal with. It's not like they were forced to only have 3 picks in 6 rounds. They put themselves in this position with offseason moves that have them 10 games under .500 and well out of the race. Wilken certain was forced into this position. Remember he was brought in this offseason as well and if memory serves, it was well after the FA signings. Wilken runs the draft and his hands were somewhat tied. I'm not trying to be overly optimistic, and for the record, this draft disappoints we as well, but realistically this was a poor draft well before a single pick was made. If you had to choose a draft where you only had a few picks, wouldn't you pick the weakest draft? I would pick a more impactful group of free agents to lose my picks over. Who upsets you more at this point, Jones or Pierre? Just curious, include the contract situations as well.

Why don't we draft position players that can hit, and let them learn better defense instead of the other way around?

They've only had 3 picks to deal with. BA is going to rip this draft apart. Worst in the NL? Probably. Worst in baseball? Maybe. But the draft was weak to begin with.

They must feel confident that they can sign Samardzija to give up the only other pick they have in the first 5 rounds other than Colvin otherwise would be questionable. In fact, this whole draft has been questionable in my mind. I trust Wilken as he has a proven track-record from Toronto. His hands are somewhat tied though with only a couple picks to deal with. How do you pronounce Samardzija? Sah-MARD-zija?

I'm convinced. does that make me a can of shoe polish? Rumors that I'm shaped like a can of beer are cruel and totally off base. A keg? Maybe, but a can of beer definitly not! Does this mean you guys think I'm Cedric Bozeman based on my avatar? No. I pictured........a raisin actually.

Thinking about past drafts, the Cubs have had some doosys for first round picks, off the top of my head: Pawelek - looks like a keeper but he hasn't pitched above the rookie league Johnson - meh, jury is still out but he's been unimpressive as a first rounder IMO Brownlie - ugh Harvey - ugh, hitting under .200 in A ball Prior - not sure what to say here, but we could have had Texeira. Montanez - ugh, but he's hit well since the shift to the outfield Christiansen - double ugh Not a good history

This makes me feel a bit better. Yeah, and he's a college kid so we should have a decent idea within the next year or two.

My thoughts: Hendry has a losing ML team and the system is rank with poor high picks of late. It would be tempting for Hendry to take the safest pick so no one will question their system any more than they may already, at least as it pertains to position players. He must have a decent level of confidence that this kid can do something. Am I nuts?
