  1. This is why I'm not a big fan of buying jerseys of current players. My only Cubs jersey is a Santo BP jersey I bought off ebay a few years ago. If I bought a Hawks jersey, I'd want Secord, Larmer or Magnuson. Timeless stuff.

You just never know how long guys are gonna be around. And I like Versteeg, but who's to say he's not playing the best hockey he'll ever play right now. You could be that guy (and you know there was at least one) wearing a Ryan Leaf jersey to the Chargers playoff game tonight.

  2. There's no thread for this so I suppose this is the most appropriate place. I watched most of the world jr. semis tonight, Canada vs. Russia.

Canada tied the game with 5.4 seconds left and then won in a shootout after a scoreless 10-minute overtime. What a game. Jordan Eberle (Edmonton draft pick) scored the tying goal and then totally buggered Russia's goalie in the shootout. He's an exciting player. He and Tavares...wow.

NHL Network is airing the championship game against Sweden Monday night. I think they are re-airing both semis again tomorrow night too. Great hockey, and a wild atmosphere in Ottawa.

  3.

Weird. It's not like they get playoff appearances every year in Minny. Usually their fans are better than that, although I'm sure they will sell the tickets.

Still, it is pretty sad. Those tickets would have been gone in 15 seconds if the Bears won the North.

Arizona may yet be blacked out from that game if they can't move some tickets fast.

I thought once they got within a certain number the network airing the game bought the rest because of all the ad revenue they would lose.

  4. d wasn't great, but huet was really bad. usually i'm pretty lenient toward goalies, but he was not good at all.

hawks don't need an enforcer, they need some grit in their top 6. kane cross-checking people in the throat isn't the answer to that problem.

Exactly. Guys like Brouwer, Bolland and Havlat are nice offensive forwards, and they are okay in the defensive zone, but they aren't physical players. Buff doesn't seem to do as much hitting this here. I love when the 4th line is on the ice. They may not be as skilled, but you know they are going 100% and they are going to hit a guy when he's near the boards with the puck.

I'm not all that frustrated with the last two games. It's just a wake-up call. A reminder that this is still the youngest team in the NHL and while we may have a lot to look forward to, this team isn't there yet. And who would expect them to be?

  5. I know nothing about hockey but this Huet guy doesn't seem like he's very good.

But all he needs is consistant time on the ice!

    Oh yeah, that's it!

I have an inherent bias that I'll readily admit against French Canadian players. I don't like their style and i don't think they play with heart. Although the style thing doesn't apply to Huet, I don't think he plays with heart or intensity.

And he generally has just sucked all year, save for a couple games.

  6. From the ESPN.com article about the DeRosa/Miles moves:

Neither are Chicago's moves expected to trigger a trade for Peavy. Sources tell ESPN that there are no ongoing talks between the Cubs and Padres involving Peavy.

So in terms of next year's team, we just traded DeRosa and Marquis for Bradley and Miles

And at worst that means Marshall in the rotation. So it's really Marshall replacing Marquis, Bradley replacing Fuku and Miles/Fontenot replacing DeRo. At worst that's a wash. And I think it's an improvement.

  7. even if we sign bradley with all of the downgrades we've done this season we're a lot worse than we were last season. A good 10 to 12 wins.

What if we get Peavy for the DeRosa prospects, and no one very valuable to the major league team and go into the season with this roster?

OF: Soriano, Johnson, Fukudome, Gathright, Bradley

IF: Ramirez, Theriot, Fontenot, Miles, Lee, another bad backup IF

    C: Soto, Koyie Hill

SP: Peavy, Dempster, Zambrano, Lilly, Marshall

RP: Gregg, Marmol, Samardzija, Wuertz, Cotts, Guzman, Vizcaino

Gone in trades would be: Marquis, Pie, Cedeno, DeRosa, minor leaguers from Cleveland, and a few other lower level guys from Cubs.

    Harden?

  8. cubs better get peavy because dero >>> miles/fontenot and wood >>> gregg. they've gotten a whole lot worse since the season ended.

Yeah, I hate this philosophy. You know you can get Peavy and Bradley, but wait to get rid of players because you don't want to have that much money tied up in case something doesn't work out. Well, isn't it better to get Peavy and Bradley and worry about a Marquis trade NOT working out than making the trades to get rid of Marquis and Derosa and having the Peavy deal not work out. It's better to be stuck with a super high payroll, but have a good team than it is to be stuck with a lower payroll and a lesser team.

Says the guy not writing the checks.

I agree with you, but I don't think that's how they think in the front office.
