  1. yeah i was rather impressed that the fans stood up and cheered when he had the 2 strike count with 1 out in the inning while the Cubs were down 4.
  2. stewarts having a pretty floyd-esque season. we have in-house options (2 of them) that will at least produce with him, probably outproduce him, and they don't cost anything to acquire.
  3. What do you mean? the huge alley in right center. though right down the line it isn't as bad as the rest of the park with that crazy section of seats that juts out from the foul pole.
  4. What did he say? 20 years later, he played over 20 years in the NBA.
  5. and i bet if you took a poll of major leaguers, they'd say juan pierre and david eckstein are good baseball players.
  6. i bet kruk said that randy johnson would win 30 games in july.
  7. well, barrett is actually a drag on his team at this point. i think it's more of a coincidence that the cubs were struggling while he was on the team (since he wasn't a total drag offensively), but he's a terrible player for the padres for the time being. he figured out a way to make their offense worse.
  8. does Houston work? 4 IP, 6 ER. How about Pittsburgh? 4.2, 6 ER.
  9. i don't think so. when we play at the same time as the brewers, not many people are paying attention here as the updates usually come in the game thread. if the game goes into extras (like it did on tuesday) then maybe.
  10. wuertz. hopefully marshall pitches a gem.
  11. yeah i caught that too. i really don't have a problem with provost, he's just no pat hughes.
  12. Especially from NY teams. Hopefully Kerry Wood pitches at some point during the game. Any chance Hee-Seop Choi could make an appearance? Maybe Eric Karros instead? Is Choi still in baseball anymore? i think he went back overseas and is playing baseball in Japan.

  14. what do you mean? Remlinger is a lefty, he gets lefties out and will invariably struggle against righties because he is a lefty!
  15. no, i'm saying how often he gets a hit doesn't tell me much about how much someone contributes offensively. No but it tells quite a bit For instance if someone can get a hit 35% of the time then he is a good player even if he is a below average power hitter. so far this year, one player has gotten a hit 35% of the time. that's a very limited way to look at things. and seriously, if all of those hits are singles and he's a slow/bad base runner, he doesn't contribute much offensively. average is virtually worthless on it's own, much moreso than OBP or SLG.

  17. I agree. I get tired of reading posts with these Moneyball stats being the only way to evaluate a player. Sure OPS is a useful stat, but I refuse to believe that any one stat can truly reflect someone's value. they're not the only way, but on a message board, they're usually the best. nah let's get back to the good ol' days of using batting average to determine a player's worth Ba is a very good stat, just not as good as OBP. Someone who hits .350 with 10 homers is much better than a .220 hitter with 40 homers I'm not referring to anyone just saying. using average and home runs is only slightly better than using average and nothing else. are we talking about pedro feliz or adam dunn? are we talking about ichiro or joe mauer? I'm just saying that BA is a good measure of skill, still OBP is the best except that it's not. it tells you very little about a player's ability to be a positive contributor offensively to his baseball team.

  19. already went through this. he has 1 extra steal in close and late situations, 2 fewer CS. it's not like reyes is a bum on the bases. he beats the break-even point of 77. Theriot is a better base stealer and percentages prove it. How many steals are simply in close situations for Theriot and Reyes. you already provided the argument why theriot is pretty much on the same level. if theriot had the 70 stolen base attempts or whatever Reyes has, his percentage would go down. he proved this throughout his minor league career (115/164, 70.12%). a lot of SB% has to do with the manager anyway, and Lou has proven throughout his career that he's pretty good at handling runners on the bases. arguing this point is non-sense anyway.
