  1. Hoping he could score from 1st on a double. Of course he probably could have just put Pie in to run and had him stay in the outfield and bat in the 9 spot. but i just don't see the point of subbing for the go-ahead run there, especially when it's your best hitter. if cedeno has a chance to score, the game is already tied, and it's a much safer assumption that he won't score, so you pretty much just take your best hitter out of the game for no reason. if it was the game-tying run or if it was daryle ward/cliff floyd or someone similar at first, i wouldn't have an issue with it. i think it's bad to do it for rammy, though. I don't know if I want Ramirez running around the bases trying to win the game with his knee. Unless it goes to 10 / Reds score a couple here Ramirez won't bat again. if ramirez or cedeno has a chance to score, the game is already tied and there's a good chance he'll get another AB in the game. if it's a RBI single, then cedeno has no chance to score anyway, and we're stuck without our best hitter in the lineup for the rest of the game.

  3. what's the point of bringing in cedeno there?
  4. was that the first time the cubs have gone back to back this year?
  5. By the time Soriano comes back, rosters will have expanded. I would hope that Fox stays up here for the rest of the season. No use in wasting two of his options in one year, especially when September is right around the corner. you can't use up options during a year. once he's called up, he's used up his option and can be sent up and down freely. the option rules should be stickied at the top of this board because this comes up every time someone is called up. The option isn't used from being called up, it's used from being sent down. For all players who start the season the 40 man but do not break camp with the 25 man/60 day DL, they use up the option before the season started. For guys added to the 40 man in season, they have to be sent down first before using an option. If Pigs lasts the season on the 25 man until rosters expand then he will still have all options in tact at the end of the year. (not that it's a great concern with Pigs.) Technically, a player has to spend 20 days in the minors for that option to be used up - if he spends less than that, the option isn't burned. In the case of Pigs, if he goes back down for 19 days, then comes back up for good, he'll still have 3 minor league options to start next season. The same is true for EPatt - as long as he's recalled by September 2nd, he will have all 3 options for next season. If Jake Fox doesn't go back to the minors again this season, he also will have all 3 options remaining since he spent 18 days in Iowa after being sent down. see, i had no clue on the more intricate parts of the rules for options, and this discussion seemingly comes up every time someone is called up/sent down. sticky the option rules!

  7. drop berkman, add dunn drop pujols, add howard
  8. Among pitchers in the top 30 in IP (Marquis ranks 30th) + whoever else davearm mentioned, Marquis is 34th in IP/GS.
  9. And what do you suppose happens to the bullpen when a guy like Rusch is forced to start a game because the scheduled starter can't go? Now you've got starter that's even more likely to leave the game early, but one fewer BP arm available to deal with the added stress. what in the world does that have to do with the argument at hand? i know rusch is/was a terrible pitcher. i don't know what you're getting at with that post.
  10. well except that his argument is that marquis contributes to a burned out or mediocre bullpen because he frequently leaves games early. this was a terrible problem with the Cubs last year, as their bullpen had the most innings pitched in the NL. So despite having a rather talented pen, the Cubs bullpen ERA was 4.04, which was probably not a true indication of the talent in the pen since guys like Rusch and Novoa frequently have to pitch (substitute Eyre and Gallager for this year). when your starter leaves early it exposes the weakest part of most pitching staffs, the mid-long relief.
  11. Reyes and Rollins were both given adequate time to snap out of slumps in the majors at the age of 22. Felix is just going through his first real major league slump.
  12. LOL. 30th in the NL in IP; 55th in MLB in IP. Both figures would put him as a fringe #2, top #3 innings eater. A few NL notables behind him: Smoltz, Zito, Sheets, Odalis Perez, Chris Young. I'd suggest you retreat back to the trend mullarkey. He's talking about average innings per start. Zito is the only guy who is averaging fewer innings per start, and that's because he's been terrible this year. There is something to be said for health, but that wasn't the gist of his post. Chris Young, IIRC, has issues with his hands/fingers numbing. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c194/vh2k6/ipperstart-1.gif
  13. 3.89 bullpen ERA, 8th in the NL. A lot of that is due to the pitiful May the team had.
  14. why are we seriously complaining about gallagher in a game where he was mopping up. it doesn't really matter if he fails or not because the game is already a loss. jim doesn't need to go out and trade viable assets for help in the back end of the bullpen in a blowout.
  15. i'd bet with run scoring generally being down that he's more like an average-slightly above average #3., but i am far too lazy to actually go through it all on my own.
  16. he also shouldn't have traded for for Sorehammy Ramirez or Derrek Lifeless m i rite.
  17. no, because he will probably have engaged in a variety of acts which have stained the the message board, and he will have to live with the consequences of those acts.
  18. picturing that in my mind.... cracking up here. i think he'd have to change pants first. not enough time.
  19. Woo! Murton tied for 2nd among Cubs outfielders in home runs!
  20. he's not going to make a dumb trade value-wise, but he's going to make a stupid acquisition that makes no sense (like shannon stewart and his total lack of power and even worse numbers against lefties).
  21. Toriis younger, better, and hes the best defensive outfielder on the planet. If nothing else se could just keep him on the team long enough for Joke and Pagan to see how its done. Andrew Jones > Tori Hunter i would say they've both declined steeply defensively. hell i'd probably take pie over both of them defensively at this point. Ichiro!
  22. oh boy oh boy. lilly in a home run haven and we're facing a pitcher we've never seen before. go cubs :?
  23. the rockies are playing on rookie and the brewers are playing on mvp... alright i'm reaching a little bit. this is insane though. some kind of meltdown.
  24. did the brewers feed just cut out for anyone else?
