  1. I like Hendry's drive to get players to improve the team and make trades, but I just don't think he understands the type of player that is needed to win the big games. He has little idea which statistics are important and which aren't. That said, I think he's in top half compared to all the other GM's in the league. I don't know, I obviously am not in the same boat as many others here, this 2007 team wasn't good enough, but I think rookie contributions can outweigh veteran depreciation in 2008. I think this is a team can get here again.
  2. Not sure I can agree with that. I do agree with you, but looking back we had a lot of great moments this season. Back in April, I really thought we would be around .500 this season and we blew that under the water. We've had rookie contributions that in my opinion came out of nowhere. I certainly didn't expect this season from Marmol or Soto for that matter. Yes I am disappointed for not winning the world series but we've had rookie contributions we just haven't seen in a while. I mean Kevin Hart, what a return on investment for Bynum?!! I just didn't think we would be here even after all the money spending but we are here.
  3. Hey bro, I hear ya. This series loss was disappointing don't get me wrong, but it doesn't compare to how I disappointed I was in 2003. We are a mediocre team in a bad division that got beat by a good team in a solid division. A DBacks Rockies championship series will be really lame, but our team just isn't ready yet. As others have pointed out, we've had strong contributions from rookies, and Wood, as much as some of us are over him, that guy was bringing it all series. Has any pitcher ever been able to hit the upper 90's regularly after shoulder surgery? Game two was a really disappointing loss, so tonight wasn't all that bad. After how September went and how this division panned out, I can't help but be extremely excited about what Soto and Marmol will bring to the team next year. Keep the faith guys!
  4. against righties, he's batting .143 with a .971 OPS
  5. you and me both
  6. Wow. Of course he's no league MVP, but he merits serious consideration for team MVP, IMO. I really like the way Lou uses him, he's put out a lot of fires. He's the difference between this team having a good bullpen or a shaky one.
  7. I'm really going to miss these minor league threads with the "Geovany Soto" post from Sethuel/Truffle every day, seriously. I really hope he's no one-year wonder, and I hope he gets a long look for the Cubs.
  8. Sometimes I worry I might be crazy. Then, out of nowhere, a random post will set me straight. Hahaha, being the lurker I am, those posts cracked me up when I read them. I would love to have a drink with her and find out why exactly she hates Ryno so. This is the same person that hates Mr. Grace for dirtbag-ish reasons, right? She has had to have had some awesome firsthand run-ins with these guys. Two things: I don't drink and I'm very fond of Mark Grace. Ah, my bad. Well if you ever wanna hang out I'm all for it.
  9. Matt Murton
  10. There have been 3 No-Hitters THIS YEAR Not often a 1-AA team beats Michigan in the Big House You can't divide it into just Michigan though, no rookie SP has thrown a no hitter for Boston ever as far as I know, I mean if you break it down by team its just as amazing. Some guy threw a no hitter in his 2nd start ever, that is amazing. Some overrated football team lost a game early, big whup. But thats just me. Hell, the Cards have had 2 rookie no-hitters the past 8 years.....shouldn't surprise anyone though, that damned franchise. And both of those pitchers went straight into the toilet, which is some consolation. I apologize if I haven't read this thread closely enough, but Buchholz has posted some really nice Minor League stats, almost Rich Hill-like with the rate stats like K/9 and H/9. Although I have no idea what Buchholz has for a pitch repertoire, I think he has a great chance to sustain his early success.
  11. JeffH, you're ok in my book, no matter what these folks say about you. This team is only what, four games over .500? We need a big September before I'm a believer. Edit: Ok, so the Cardinals won last year with a very mediocre team, but they had David Eckstein. Our only hope is that Theriot is Ecksteiny enough to cause the opposing CF to make a critical error that carries us to a WS victory. Yeah and if somebody mentioned something about who should be our DH then you'd have the slightest bit of a point. We're leading the division right now, why is it stupid to talk about a potential playoff roster? Oh believe me I'm pulling hard for us when/if we make the playoffs, I just think JeffH has a legitimate concern. In 2003 I think we had a very similar record on September 1, but we had a really good month that we carried into the playoffs. I'm just hoping for more of the same this year with better results.
  12. Miguel Olivo is bad. His career OBP is .274. Soto has walked 53 times in 110 games with Iowa; Olivo has walked a grand total of 66 times in 539 major league games. Not good. Yep. Soto has always had a solid OBP in the minors, every single year. Players like that project better for success in the Majors than Miguel Olivo. I know R'sBI is not a stat to hitch your wagon to (thanks FJM), but he did have 109 R'sBI in 109 games, that's kind of awesome in my book. If he can be the defensive catcher he has been all through his minor league career and turn in .350+ OBP in the majors, he will be an asset to the Major League Cubs. I mean, he has to hit for more power than Kendall, right? EDIT: 110 games? when did that happen? bum

  15. I Googled it and read a link, doesn't sound pleasant at all.
  16. I am not disputing that Barrett/Lou's tirade effected the Cubs, but every Cub player I heard interviewed said those two things had nothing to do with it. Or maybe they just don't want to admit it because they are professional athletes who can do it themselves. Agreed, it drives me nuts when I see the media play up the whole Barrett/Z fight or the Piniella outburst as the turning point. The Cubs didn't play any better until three weeks after both of those incidents, when we played the White Sox at the cell. I think Marmol's emergence in the bullpen has much more to do with this winning streak than anything else.
  17. We're getting really close to a "most users ever online" record at NSBB.
  18. Dusty, Jon and Orel look like Easter eggs. Who dressed those fools?
  19. yea he sucks, that guy Theriot, whos in your sig, is sooo much better. So was Barret to blame for todays game where Lilly gave up 5 runs? How about last night when Marquis stunk up the park? I hope the Cubs have the patience to ride out Theriot's slump, he's better than what he's putting up right now. I know his .500+ slg last year was flukey and somewhat comical, but he's also capable of doing better than he is doing now in the majors. As others have mentioned, he's a utility player, and DeRosa should never lose a start to him, but Theriot has value to this team.
  20. For those that enjoy Pierre bashing and profanity, dodgerblues.com has a Pierre thread stickied in their fan forum. Poor Dodger fans.
  21. I'm kind of sad that he didn't say something about how many black and Latin American hitters there are on the roster, and how they weren't bred to play in this type of weather. I think that Lou is just saying that pitching and defense are not this team's strong points, and that offense tends to slump a little more with the cold weather than pitching and defense. Whether this is true or not is debatable, and I agree with the general consensus here that it's better to not make excuses; but at least Lou is using rationale other than race, # of moving parts, or fishing.
  22. Jay Johnstone he was also a movie star
  23. if Dusty goes fishing and he doesn't catch anything, it's because all those fish were clogging the pond for the ones that can swim.
