  1. The question is would a low ranking be enough to destroy the goodwill and overall buzz that was generated when it was revealed that Al Qaeda wanted to blow up the city?
  2. I'm more concerned with whether Soldier Field's 5th place ranking undermines Chicagoans sense of civic pride or bolsters it.
  3. http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/39297/power-rankings-top-10-toughest-venues Hey UMFan, I need a blow by blow analysis on the validity of these power rankings.
  4. I definitely lean heavily towards the saber side, but at the same time I'm perplexed by how some people treat analysis as if the game is played in a vacuum by automatons. It's kind of a backlash against antiquated criteria like chemistry, grit and the W/L/AVG/RBI/etc. stat base. I definitely think those things have been proven to be largely superfluous (I think people who still treat them as gospel are the baseball equivalent of the flat earth society), but the extremes some folks take the application of advanced statistical analysis to is a bit too far. Some of the stats (especially defensive metrics) are still really hazy. Yeah but it's not like we're rehashing the value of OBP debate. That book has been closed. Obviously there are some dopes who still cling to chemistry and counting stats and all that (usually not the ones who would go out of their way to find a team specific message board) but the stats discussion is being changed at the margins. Now you need a stats background just to follow the latest stuff.
  5. Sidetrack, but we are nowhere near computers solving chess. True and I'm no chess guru but aren't a lot of Kasparov types already calling for a move towards randomized chess or having GMs play WITH computers against other GMs playing with computers so memorizing every opening isn't the name of the game?
  6. Also, this is kind of a stretch, but it's almost like baseball is moving towards something where you know if you just input some numbers you know how it'll play out. Watch when the supercomputers solve chess the whole game will die unless big changes are made (e.g. Fischer Random Chess where people play with random openings so the guy who memorizes a zillion opening variations isn't the best). Sabermetrics is a great tool but fuzzy math and ignorance does foster (bad, misinformed) discussion. And (bad, misinformed) discussion means traffic.
  7. I'd like to see the traffic numbers for baseball message boards in general. The NFL sucks up most of the available oxygen, college football gets bigger every year, the NBA is as good as its ever been, hockey is less of a basket case these days, and soccer is staring to make some hay in the US. There's a diminishing interest in the sport as a whole if you look at how many kids are taking it up.
  8. Did that really happen
  9. Holy [expletive] [expletive] omgggg
  10. They need an SG that can slot in as a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th option depending on match ups.
  11. I have a really hard time seeing Knox as a #2. He put up 50+ catches and 900 yards in his 2nd year, as a 5th round pick, out of Abilene Christian....first as a starter. His numbers last year were pretty much in-line with what middle of the pack #2 WRs put up. Of course, he was the #1 target last year, so that's not good. But I think he'd be extremely effective with a guy on the other side of him who is good enough to take some of the coverage away from him and put him in 1-on-1's with #2 CBs. And that #1 guy ain't Earl Bennett.
  12. Magic and Kobe. Well Kobe had a bunch of air balls against the Jazz one year but he was like 18 or 19 at the time. Basically Rose sucks because he didn't have a prime Kareem or Shaq on his team. Shaq and Kobe never had bad playoff games before the finally won their first championships? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ws2yhBzJjis I think Kobe was like 18 years old in this game. Magic won a title his rookie year but again, he had Kareem (although he did put up something ridiculous like 42/15/7 in Game 6 of the Finals to clinch it when Kareem was hurt).
  13. Magic and Kobe. Well Kobe had a bunch of air balls against the Jazz one year but he was like 18 or 19 at the time. Basically Rose sucks because he didn't have a prime Kareem or Shaq on his team.
  14. Ah okay then. That completely negates all of that statistical evidence and makes the comparisons horrid. What statistical evidence? The statistical evidence that says Rose is comparable to 4 really good players--including two of the best of all time--as well as to two guys who were really talented but didn't have their heads on quite right? I mean I guess it's not a horrid comparison but I'm not sure I see the point.
  15. And whoever made the comparison between the Bulls and the Bears was right on. They're easy to root for because they play their asses off but when everyone is trying hard the difference in talent becomes pretty stark. The Heat are basically the Packers.
  16. Rose's only hobby is basketball. There's your difference.
  17. And everyone knows the only reason Miami won is because the refs decided to get them back in the game at the end of the 3rd so Thibs couldn't give Rose a blow to start the 4th.
  18. Let's just assume there's basketball next year and Miami is able to improve incrementally. Does a conventional team beat them? We can afford to take some off the table on defense to get a real flow on offense going. And then I see a weirdly built team like Dallas that has some combination of Kidd/Terry/Barea on the floor a lot of the time (sometimes all 3 at once!). I dunno, I just like the look of it in my mind's eye.
  19. I hate everything. wacky idea: Nash/Rose back court next year?
  20. Also the fact that we only went ISO until Rose had logged 35+ minutes and had Lebron covering him.
  21. Lebron was also beyond putrid in those Finals as well. These things happen.
  22. And I've been screaming about this all series...let's run a zillion PnRs while Bibby/Chalmers are covering Rose but go ISO when he has Lebron James on him? what the [expletive] thibs?
  23. And I know I'm the biggest Rose stan on this board but let's keep in mind he's still the same age as MICHAEL [expletive] JORDAN was as a rookie in the NBA. He's ahead of schedule folks. Get OJ or JR and hope the new CBA hamstrings Miami and let's wreck [expletive]. go dirk
  24. Ok so saying you'd rather have Rose over Lebron is silly. But doesn't anyone wanna root for our guy? He's taking his lumps. Everyone has had to. The only wing players that haven't happened to play with Shaq or Kareem. [expletive] it man. I wanna win with our guys.
