  1. At the GM meetings last year, Theo ruled out the idea of #Cubs signing two players to nine-figure contracts that winter...
  2. Theo HUGE moves: “If we want to do two things we have to get pretty creative. Even if we do one really big thing we have to get creative.” Hmm, the art of saying nothing......Theo has it down. I'll take this to mean trading off the Coghlan, Hammel, Wood types, I guess?
  3. Heyman just mentioned us in on O'Day.
  4. There's a report saying its the Twins.
  5. I wonder if theres even a remote chance he can play LF or RF?
  6. Little surprised we didn't roster Felix Pena prior to him becoming a minor league FA, based on the substantial uptick in his stuff and the current 10 spots we have available.
  7. Looks like the Pirates won the bidding. Edit- Nitkowski's report being refuted by Olney and Heyman. So no winner yet.
  8. Most think the Mets will go after Desmond. If they've got the money, that's what I'd do and just hold onto their pitching.
  9. There was some speculation Colorado may have taken him at 8. After that, I think it was dependent on which team outside the top 10 was fine with just taking a bat that may not have had a true position. I think the absolute bottom for him was falling to 19 and Cincy. But most mocks had him in the 11-15 range, if I recall.
  10. The fact he's got less miles on his arm than most guys his age(or even a bit younger) is one of the main reasons he's getting a bit of a pass for his horrible 2015. The velocity is fine with him too, so I think teams are more or less just writing it off as a bad year and will still give him a payday. 5/80 is definitely higher than I'd have thought a few months ago, but I would be OK if we gave him that. Reuniting him with Bosio.....I'd say he's got a realistic chance to even live up to that deal. Which is hard to say with any pitcher on a 5 year deal.
  11. I'd be OK with Lackey on a 2 year deal and giving up the 1st, if he wasn't a complete [expletive]. Not that we'd do it, but if we gave Kennedy, Estrada, Gallardo, Anderson(health) a deal and didn't also sign a big name with them-I'd be pissed. Those guys aren't worth it. At any rate, I'd RATHER sign Kazmir than Shark(I think) due to the pick attached to Shark, as an example. But I wouldn't care much. Especially since we can recoup the value in IFA's this year anyway.
  12. I wonder why we picked him up at this stage? Meaning he's in arbitration and coming off an awful season. Supposedly messed with his delivery and didn't find it until very late. At any rate, if we picked him up NOW, I guess he's insurance and we'd offer him arb if we can't get someone else in the mix rather quickly? Seems a bit like Cahill insurance to me. If he wants too much, here's our next version, just on a ML deal off the bat.....
  13. Initial thoughts..... CJ is in my top 10, but it's definitely not worth any hand wringing if he missed. 2) No surprise BA will be low on EJM, it'll take actual performance before they let up off Badler's report. Embarrassing comment on elite guys getting over 10 mill though as it definitely seemed he just got hung out by unforeseen circumstances(and had 7.5 from Yanks before their offer timed out. 3) If Vogelbach isn't top 30, that's just dumb. I'm not counting on trading him at this point, but he could be nice insurance on Rizzo and a solid PH/backup type. 4) Very intrigued on what they must have heard on De La Cruz that jumped him up this high.
  14. I can't stand him either. But if he's our 4th SP heading into 2016, I'm not going to complain too much.
  15. @CarrieMuskat: Hoyer has seen #Cubs linked to nearly every free agent on market. Says "I think some of the rumors about us are a little bit extreme" @ESPNChiCubs: Jed Hoyer: "We will look to add multiple starting pitchers at various levels of the organization." @CarrieMuskat: #Cubs Hoyer says: "We're likely to focus a lot of our resources on pitching and pitching depth" @ESPNChiCubs: Hoyer on spending $$: “We have the means to fill the holes we want to fill.” But tempered it some after saying that. @ESPNChiCubs: Hoyer:“There has to be a level of common sense when thinking about what we’re going to do” That should take care of the Greinke&Price tweets
  16. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/11/2015-16-top-50-mlb-free-agents-with-predictions.html Cubs with Price at 7/217, Lackey at 3/51, and Span at 3/39. Jesus, I'd love all that. But in no way do I see our payroll jumping THAT much. But I'd love it.
  17. Wasn't that basically in response to "David, do you think it would be special for the Cubs to win the World Series?" Eh probably. No idea, but that sounds likely.
  18. I think Lackey is safe in declining. I hope the Nats don't put one on Span, in case he becomes a target for us.
  19. “There’s probably not another city that’s dying for a World Series more than Chicago. I think everybody would probably agree with me on that. That’s special. It’s absolutely special.” – David Price, sounding like the Cy Young Award winner already had a free-agent destination in mind, June 10.
  20. I feel like Olney's been on Price to the Cubs for like 2 years. Olney went to Vanderbilt himself, so there's that anyway.
  21. I figured it was hockey, but had no idea what it entailed.
  22. Yeah, they just dealt a depth guy instead of a really good one. I'd say this comes fairly close to taking them off our wish list.
  23. The last Cubs/White Sox trade was the Neal Cotts deal in 2006. Prior to that, it was the Garland/Karchner deal in 1998, which followed the Sammy/Bell deal in 1992. The asking price for us to get one of their elite guys would be higher than it would be for other teams. They can't afford to be responsible for helping put us over the top. Risking fan backlash with less than stellar attendance already is a risk that would assure them asking for a ton from us. I can't think there'd be other options out there that require less of a return than what it'd take from them. And IF the packages are fairly close, I'd still bet huge they'd take something from somewhere else anyway, due to the potential risk of it turning into another Sammy type situation.
  24. We just lost Anthony Lapoce to the Rangers. Hitting coach in the minors for us, got a major league gig with the Rangers. Hate that we've lost him and Johnson, but it speaks volumes as to the quality of guys we've got working with our minor leaguers too.
