You say the Cubs get lots of press because they have a big fan base, I say they have a big fan base because they get lots of press. Being on tv all over the country has done wonders for a fan base that until the last twenty years of the twentieth century wasn't that exceptional. The creation of the "lovable loser" Cubbie fans stereotype came with WGN and all the cameras panning over the bleacher bums. To say that Cubs fans are more devoted than fans in other cities with equally long baseball history is just self-promotion. When it comes down to it as a whole, any group of fans is nothing more than a random sampling of people, and so the only thing that makes them different is team history and location. Storied franchises and/or franchises based in big cities will naturally have more fanatical fans or just more fans in general. I would say that journalists should give the most attention to the best story. This year, the White Sox are certainly more interesting and more exceptional than the Cubs, and should be getting the press they deserve for it. But because money talks louder than journalistic integrity, we'll hear about the Cubs at the beginning of sportscenter (well, right after the yankees and red sox) all year long.
