Cruz, who has spent the majority of the past five seasons in the Majors, was optioned to Sacramento on June 17 after seeing his ERA balloon to 8.49 in 21 games with Oakland. He's gone progressively deeper in each of his three starts, including two dominant performances last week, in which the 26-year-old Dominican struck out 21 batters in just 12 1/3 innings. Cruz fanned 10 in 5 1/3 shutout innings against Portland on June 27, but the Beavers rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth to beat the River Cats, 2-1. On July 3, Cruz yielded just one earned run on three hits and a walk while striking out 11 in seven innings of a 5-2 win over Salt Lake. " Sounds like Cruz could be worse off.
