  1. This should have happened a long time ago. If the Cubs knew that his velocity was down and he was still not physically back from his bout of mono, then they should have never thrown him out there in the first place. All it could do is one, hurt him mentally and two, hurt him further physically if he tries to rear back and throw something he's not capable of at the time. They should have put him in Mesa until he could get his strength back to some level it was in college. I just hope he's not done for completely.
  2. <> Now Rosenthal is speculating that Beane may want out of Oak. So, would he be a good choice to run the Cubs --I would lean towards yes. Bring him in as president and let him put the staff in order. Talk about a change. I don't believe the Ricketts would go for it however.
  3. The rate will most likely be substantially lower and we really don't know the terms of the debt either. It's possible he went with an interest only type of loan that wouldn't impede baseball functions what so ever until the balloon payment kicks in. Either way, there's just too many possibilities to get overly concerned about it. I'll have to look back to see exactly what the terms were. It is substantially lower than what you mentioned -- however it's enough to make an effect on their availability of cash each year. The reason we didn't do the deal was that we wanted to have the option of converting our debt into an equity share of the team at the current valuation vs. future. That wasn't on the table according to the Ricketts.
  4. I'm a little weary of it. I actually met with Goldman Sachs at the time the Ricketts were looking for lenders. They bought a large percentage of the team with debt. It's not unusual, but it was a little scary when you thought of the %'s they would need to pay the debt holders. In order to pay it back and continue to invest in the team on a yearly basis was daunting. I honestly questioned at the time why MLB and Sam Zells/Tribune were selecting this buying group vs. some of the other offers on the table. I don't believe Cuban's offer, overall, was better but there was another group that had a more attractive total package.
  5. Keith Law reported: <> Surprising --I believe most mock drafts have Springer going in the middle of the 1st round and I don't see a college outfielder being an area of need for the Cubs.
  6. As the draft gets closer, the more and more I'm finding myself frustrated with the Cubs "inspired" play at the end of last year. If they played like the team was truly capable of then the Cubs would be drafting somewhere between the 4-6th pick in the draft. This draft is strong, but I would rather see them have a real shot at the top 4-5 players in this draft without the other clubs dictating who they take.
  7. This whole season has been pitiful. Typical bad fundamental baseball from the Cubs and unfortunately I don't see it changing under the current regime. I don't see any players coming up through the system that will greatly improve things either. Vitters has had a poor season so far, Simpson has been pretty awful, and Cashner is now out for an unspecified amount of time. There's little to get excited for. Brett Jackson is the only player that may be worth watching--but he's now injured. Just a depressing season. Please tell me the Ricketts are going to wake up and make a change. Enough is enough. I would rather root for and watch a bunch of kids who play hard (and so happen to make some mistakes) than to watch this boring veteran team that can't play.
  8. From Keith Law's twitter: <> Interesting.
  9. <> I believe Rosscup is the lower level minor league pitcher the Cubs got back as part of the Garza deal. I don't know what the scouts saw him in to ask for him back, but Hendry has done reasonably well with "throw ins" in the past.
  10. I have not seen this posted anywhere. Will Carroll is claiming that Cashner has a small tear in his rotator cuff. < Tearing that is bad enough, but if a loose or compromised cuff allows the humeral head to puncture and tear the labrum, that's even worse. The Cubs didn't mention anything about Cashner's labrum, positive or negative, so we'll have to keep this in mind after he begins pitching. I'm sure the long knives from the Cubs and Cubs fans will come out for this, but believe me, I don't want to do this again.>>
  11. Is Brian Wilson advising Charlie Sheen? Charlie Sheen's comment has Wilson all over it -- "Yes, I am on a drug -- it's called Charlie Sheen." His delivery was all Wilson.
  12. Crazy thought--but maybe the Cubs signed Lopper to have him around this spring as an influence and to offer assistance to Cashner as he makes his attempt to transition to the rotation. Really can't fault them for bringing him on a minor league deal.
  13. Have any of the sites, i.e. BP, BA, revised the Cubs top #10 after the Gorzo trade? I wonder if any of the 3 prospects will make it in to the top 10 and I would like to see where they now put Matt Szczur?
  14. (@CarrieMuskat) #Cubs get Garza, OF Fernando Perez and LHP Zachary Rosscup for Archer, Hak-Ju Lee, Guyer, Chirinos and Fuld So the Hendry got nothing more than Garza back. Rosscup's #'s look decent in low A ball, but he doesn't show up on any prospect lists.
  15. As much as the Cubs come off looking like good guys in this deal, they should have requested a prospect in return for letting him out of his contract. Maybe Cashman now owes Hendry one.
  16. It's going to be interesting to see what Sandy Alderson, DePodesta, and Ricciardi do with the Mets. I almost view their hiring as a "what could have been" for the Cubs. The Mets fired Minaya, even though he had a few years left on his contract, and then brought in a strong and respected baseball man to run the club. In doing so, Alderson went out and hired some of his young (not so young anymore) baseball and stat minded protege from their days together in Oakland. The hires were not cheap as each of them had jobs within other organizations. The Ricketts could of done something similar at the beginning of last offseason or even possibly this offseason if they made their decision on Hendry early enough. I'm not saying this is a sure thing for the Mets, but I would bet on their front office over the one the Cubs have in place today. As I said, it's going to be interesting to see how it all plays out. The Ricketts only viable option, that may come close to Alderson, would be to talk Stan Kasten out of retirement or somehow get Schuerholz away from the Braves to become the Cubs President. They would need total autonomy over the baseball side of the business. I wonder if the Ricketts are trying to go the inexpensive route and not hire high level, hire salaried execs.
  17. One point to signing Wood is that he will definitely have to sign a 1yr deal with a reasonable base. If he helps solidify the bullpen and this helps the Cubs compete next year then great, but if they don't, set-up men with short term contracts are attractive at the trade deadline. Look at what the nationals were able to get for Matt Capps this past deadline. Granted, he was a closer at the time of the trade. I wish the Cubs had the foresight this past offseason to sign Capps with that in mind.
  18. Ricketts should have hired Alderson as president and let him bring in his own baseball people. Give him total autonomy over the baseball decisions--which somehow he's given Hendry. It makes little sense to me and truly I'm surprised. I actually had some faith that they were decent business people. I guess I was wrong.
  19. A little blurb on Lilly in Chris De Luca's article in today's Suntimes <> I looked up the stats on each of the Met's "prospects." Wow, all of them have some ugly peripherals in A+ ball. I really hope Hendry can pull together a better return for Lilly if he trades him.
  20. I don't hear much about Ty Wright. His numbers so far in Tenn. have been pretty good -- .817 OPS, 6hrs and 35rbi's. What's the scoop on him? I know he's 25yrs old and he's repeating AA ball, but based on his #"s from last year he could be in Iowa if there was room for him.
  21. According to reports, the Yanks are looking for some outfield help as well. Maybe they'll take Fukudome off the Cubs hands and not ask for his salary to be covered.
  22. Good article actually.
  23. <> I thought this idea was really pretty crazy, but maybe the Cubs could put themselves in the middle of an Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sox deal. The Cubs could provide the Red Sox with a younger player who has more years of eligibility available to move on to the Padres for Gonzalez. The Cubs will have to give up some pretty good prospects.
  24. I'm really having a tough time believing that the Bradley situation is not handcuffing the Cubs this offseason.
