  2. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070806&content_id=2132964&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb He's a much better option than Ohman for a lefty in the pen, IMO...
  3. Was a decision made? Nothing official yet, no. I still think it will be Pie and the E-Patt blurb was just a snafu. I agree the Cubs.com piece was probably a mistake... as it has already been changed to Pie. Since when has Carrie Muskat been known to be infallible? Actually the front page of Cubs.com still says Eric Patterson. Where? Did you refresh your page? It could be bringing up the old cache'ed page. This is what I read at the bottom of the link regarding Soriano's injury: "The Cubs could call up outfielder Felix Pie from Triple-A Iowa, move Theriot into the leadoff spot, and see if someone can pick up the offensive slack. All of that will likely be decided on the plane ride to Houston..." The front page: The Cubs are back in action tonight at 7:05 p.m. CT when they open a seven-game road trip against the Astros at Minute Maid Park. Rich Hill starts for Chicago, while top prospect Eric Patterson is expected to be recalled to replace an injured Alfonso Soriano.
  4. Brewers @ Rockies - Vargas (9-3, 4.78) vs. Fogg (5-7, 4.87) - 8:05 PM CT Padres @ Cardinals - Wells (5-7, 5.18) vs. Looper (8-9, 5.23) - 6:05 PM CT Atlanta and L.A. have days off If you're interested in the Barry Bonds circus... they host Washington at 9:15 PM CT on ESPN2
  5. guys! Epatt is in a HR drought in Iowa, therefore he'll fit right in... call-up makes perfect sense.
  6. HEY GUYS!! The Cubs are giving a standing O to Glavine. Oh who's that #34 coming in from the bullpen???
  7. I have no idea what the lineup will be because a lefty is on the mound, Soriano is out, Pie probably will be called up but won't start, and Aramis is probably due for a day off...
  8. Could see it coming from a mile away...
  9. I'd be OK with Floyd in there against a lefty but NOT JONES. I fear that since Jacque got 2 hits to RF yesterday that he's gonna try to pull everything more so than he already did.
  10. RH loaded lineup again likely: Soriano LF Theriot SS Lee 1B Ramirez 3B DeRosa 2B Murton RF Pagan CF Kendall C Marquis P edit: Although Cliff does have good numbers against Glavine: .394, 2 HRs - so we'll see what Lou looks at...
  11. Phillies @ Brewers - 1:05 CT (Eaton 9-7, 5.87 vs. Suppan 8-9, 4.97) 755s @ Padres - 3:05 CT (Lowry 12-7, 3.32 vs. Germano 6-6, 4.38) D'Backs @ Dodgers - 3:10 CT (Webb 10-4, 3.08 vs. Penny 13-2, 2.60) Rockies @ Braves - 12:05 CT (Cook 8-6, 4.13 vs. James 9-8, 3.70) Go Phillies, 755s, DBacks, and Rockies! Scenarios: With a MIL loss and a CHC win, Cubs lead Central With a MIL win, a CHC win, and a SD loss, Cubs lead Wildcard
  12. But he's been our best hitting catcher since Barrett He's got 9 hits in 8 games with that clutch double on Friday plus he's patient at the plate. I know he takes a lot of heat for his lack of defense but it really hasn't cost the Cubs that much. I think Jason Kendall is a NL player too, one of those Edgar Renteria types that cannot be explained.
  13. Holy crap! It's gonna be a slugfest according to those batter vs. pitcher matchups - Kendall with 2 HRs off Glavine
  14. I don't think it really matters who closes. But Marmol is the guy who's pitching the best, along with probably Howry. They should be facing the middle of the other team's order; let the other guys take on the 6-9 hitters when possible. If definitely matters who closes. A closer needs to be able to throw strikes (Marmol). Dempster walks a ton of guys and it just builds up the pressure. You should have your best relievers pitching in big situations, whether it be earlier in the game or later, rather than using them in the 9th inning with a lead. The closer label/position is the most overrated thing ever. If you have a shutdown pitcher like Marmol, would you rather him come in, let's say, in the 7th inning of a tied game with 2 on and nobody out, or in the 9th inning with nobody on and nobody out and a lead (which is typically the situation that your "closer" comes in for)? I see your point but Dempster just doesn't seem to fit into the closer role at all. I don't trust him at all to nail down the win. As they say, the last 3 outs are the toughest ones to get. With Wood on the comeback trail maybe he could take Marmol's current spot while Marmol becomes the closer?
  15. Soriano is 2-15 against Maine with both hits being HRs Jones has a HR :x Floyd is 2-3 Ramirez 2-7 that's about it for the Cubs against Maine
  16. This game is our only chance to avoid a sweep. I am fully expecting a loss Sunday with Glavine vs. Marquis. As for tomorrow's outcome, Luis Castillo will probably chop a ball off the plate and over Aramis' head scoring Ruben Gotay in the 9th inning in the 1-0 loss.
  17. Vance, if you win, any word on what game it would be? Also, do you get to chat with Len and Bob in the bottom of the 7th?
  18. Hopefully the positives have outweighed the negative so far but I'd like to see what you all think about this... Unfortunately there are a lot to choose from...
  19. I think Wood or Wuertz should have pitched the 9th. Lou's gonna learn sooner or later that Dempster is at his worst in a tie game or non-save situation.
  20. I don't think it really matters who closes. But Marmol is the guy who's pitching the best, along with probably Howry. 21. IMO, the Cubs won't go far with Dempster as their closer. He is a high stress pitcher - the more men that get on base, the worse he is. Lord knows how the 9th would have gone today if the home plate ump had eyes but Carlos Marmol needs to become the closer ASAP.
  22. yep that was a Sunday night ESPN game last year where Marshall HRed and then blew a 6 run lead. Cliff Floyd hit like 2 HRs and the Mets had about 3 grand slams.
  23. Brian Lawrence making his first start of the year is pitching today for NYM
  24. Man when Pat said "Cubs are in first place", a chill went up my spine
