just got home. Nice win. RFK isn't much as a stadium - not even the food or drink are redeeming. However, $20 seats in the mezzanine above home plate as a walk-up can't be beat. It was at least 40% Cubs fans. I'll be back on the 4th. Yes, I'm facing the national nightmare that is DC on the 4th. But heck, it's better than working (which is what I'd be doing if I was on my overseas assignment). And for fun: there were a dozen Cub fans in my section. When Jones came into PH in the 9th, he was soundly booed. Poor JJ can't even get peace on the road! GO CUBS

Zell has influence because there is probably an agreement on the asset ratio for his stock price. If the Cubs are sending $7-8 mil out, that has an impact. He vetoes, saying it violates the terms of his agreement of sale. Ostensibly, it would affect the value of his stock. In the grand scheme of things, this is probably true to an extent. It should be irrelevant given the total value of the Trib and the future value of the Cubs. In other words? Dadgum right this is under protest!

Exactly. How is this okay? He owns the White Sox, but because of the sale of the Trib he gets final word on Cubs' transactions too? Terrible. Ok, I'm seriously pissed at this. Zell is a PROSPECTIVE owner. He shouldn't have any say in management unless is was specifically outlined in an agreement. I doubt this, because the Trib would be otherwise hamstring in its cash management. Someone is trying to maximize his return over caring about team success.

Certainly possible. But we're down to 20 minutes. And if Selig has to approve of a deal, then its looking increasingly unlikely. The Cubs could just DFA Jones and it buys them 10 days if there was anything holding up a transaction before the game. That would give the Marlins (or any other team wanting him) so much leverage though. Exactly. At that point the marlins could just say "Well, if you dont give us what we ask for, we'll just let you have to release him. Then you have to pay his whole salary. Sucks to be you" Yep, they could pick him up, give up nothing, and pay him the league minimum. while we pay him $8 mil over two years.

Any team that decided it couldn't wait the 10 days and therefore sought a trade would offer up even worse talent than now and we'd likely have to eat even more salary to make that happen.
