    Every time someone says this, the inevitable opposite happens.

    I think it's going to have a lot to do with the manager- and player-selected roster spots, given the 1-player-per-team rule. For example, Cristian Guzman's hitting .330 for the Nats, but Dunn's hitting reasonably well enough that he could theoretically be the Nats' representative, which would leave a potential reserve shortstop spot for Theriot, and MLB can also then use Dunn in the HR Derby. There are more machinations involved for the reserves than simply who's playing the best at each position.

    And now the obvious question, can the Ricketts family start authorizing payroll decisions as soon as the sale is agreed upon or does MLB have to approve the sale before that can happen?

    See for yourself. Looks like as a Marlin he put up fairly solid peripherals (OBP/SLG/OPS) and power numbers about on par with what he's done as a Cub the last two seasons. His career line says most of what it needs to, really: he'll hit for a solid average, decent OBP with good power (particularly with 81 games a year at Wrigley) with excellent defense and quiet leadership in the clubhouse. There are better first basemen today, but the Cubs could do way, way worse than D. Lee right now.
