  1. Easy, easy, easy there. I appreciate the nice words, but Derwood reminded you guys before about heaping too much praise. You just know it'll go to my head. Just trying to have a little fun today.
  2. Bruce, do you think that's more indicative of coaching and managing styles, or disinterest from the players? If the latter, have coaches/manager tried to light a fire under the players' butts to get them onto the field? This has everything to do with coaching and managing styles.
  3. One of the things more night games at home was supposed to accomplish was to give the Cubs a chance to get some early work in. They always claimed that day games prevented them from doing this. So now they've got more night games, and still they don't do one of the things they said they'd been doing. It was just an interesting contrast yesterday, seeing the Pirates out there early and working hard on every aspect of the game and the Cubs getting ready for their team picture. I recall former hitting coach Jeff Pentland requesting and getting the field on the road once a series. Not only has this team not taken advantage of the opportunities to get some early work done at home, it hasn't done it on the road, either.
  4. It was ruled a trap according to Pat & Ron. No. Lineout double play. The second baseman wasn't sure, so he threw to short. Shortstop threw back to first in time to double off Theriot. Official scorer ruled it a 4-6-3 lineout double play.
  5. Lineups posted early today Cubs Pierre, CF Bynum, 2B Ramirez, 3B Lee, 1B Barrett, C Murton, LF Pagan, RF Theriot, SS Zambrano, P Pirates Duffy, CF Bautista, 3B Sanchez, SS Bay, LF Nady, RF Paulino, C Doumit, 1B Castillo, 2B Maholm, P
  6. That's a tough subject. From my understanding, he was responding to reporters' questions. Dusty has received hate mail _ one hate letter is too many. I honestly don't know his motivation for keeping the subject going. The one thing I'm glad he said was that he received hate mail in San Francisco. There are certain media members there who have painted Chicago as some racist backwater. From what I know, most of the people who have criticized Dusty have done so based on his job performance. But you're always going to have racist crackpots.
  7. Thanks for the thread. Dierker is an intriguing guy. He'd certainly be good for the writers. He has worked as a broadcaster and as a manager, he was more than accommodating to the writers. I guess I'd have to look into his pitch-use patterns closely. I'm a big fan of Jim Riggleman. He was prepared day in and day out and gave reasoned answers to every question, whether you agreed with him or not. I still talk to him on occasion. He had a losing record in San Diego and a losing record in Chicago, so that makes him a tough sell in other cities.
  8. Looks like we'll start on time. May get a delay. Par for the course in Pittsburgh.
  9. Lineups (Tarp on field at 6 EDT) Cubs Pierre, CF Bynum, 2B Ramirez, 3B Jones, RF Lee, 1B Barrett, C Pagan, LF Theriot, SS Guzman, P Pirates Duffy, CF Bautista, 3B Sanchez, SS Bay, LF Nady, RF Paulino, C Doumit, 1B Castillo, 2B Snell, P

  11. Lineups Cubs Pierre, CF Bynum, 2B Ramirez, 3B Barrett, C Jones, RF Nevin, 1B Murton, LF Cedeno, SS Hill, P Cards Miles, SS Duncan, LF Pujols, 1B Rolen, 3B Encarnacion, CF Wilson, RF Belliard, 2B Bennett, C Carpenter, P
  12. Space was tight in the paper for today, but Dusty lamented a number of "questionable calls" on Pierre's attempted steals and that catchers have been throwing it "right on the toe" to nab Pierre.
  13. Lineups Cubs Pierre, CF Bynum, 2B Ramirez, 3B Jones, RF Barrett, C Mabry, 1B Pagan, LF Cedeno, SS Mateo, P Cardinals Miles, SS Duncan, LF Pujols, 1B Rolen, 3B Edmonds, CF Encarnacion, RF Belliard, 2B Bennett, C Suppan, P
  14. Yeah, I know that's "not his department". But my point is he should be able to go to the higher ups and demand the space. I feel like if this was an issue in NY, Joe would have no problem demanding the space. Same with Ozzie on the southside. Dusty's department is the field, and if another department is interfering, he's got to press the issue. Same goes with Hendry, and you would think, MacPhail. When I asked the question the other night, Dusty wanted no part of it. He should want every part of it. One of the Phillie writers asked us about it the other day. He said, "Doesn't this p*** the baseball department off?" I said, "It should."
  15. Okay, so they have time to do something now, and only Pierre is doing work. We already know he works hard though. The opportunity doesn't seem to have inspired the rest of the team to do anything. That's neither the point, nor is it true. The point is that there is no opportunity to do things. The truth is that there indeed are other guys on the field right now. I cited just one example. When fields are available, generall a lot of guys take advantage. Whether it does any good or not is another story.
  16. It's not the Cubs making excuses. I'm sure the front office would prefer that this got no press whatsoever. That's right, they'd like it to get no press. I'm sure the club rakes in a pretty penny for these groups to use the field. The lead-in header I put on my note the other day was "Wag the dog." That's what we have here.
  17. This IS ia big issue. A lot of teams take early bp, which can start at 1. I get the to park at 2 in a lot of cities, and guys are out there working. It's 3 now, and there is a Cardinal working at shorstop. A little while ago, Juan Pierre was doing some on-field work. Early BP is a fairly common occurrence. All of this fan-clinic nonsense is costing the Cubs (and the other team) valuable time they could be using.
  18. You're right, Tim. Dusty is accurate on the power point. A homer can unclog those bases, too. The other point? Geesh.
  19. Nah, he really believes that if a lot of slow guys walk, it clogs the bases for guys who can run. He stated that in the spring of 2004 in response to a question by me. Maybe we can get the NL to go back to all Astro-Turf fields and 385-foot power alleys.
  20. I've cut my base clogging related google news searches down to every other week. When was it said/when did the IQs of everyone in that room lower? Actually, I'm off today as I get ready for the road trip and to send a kid off to college for her senior year. But I will weigh in on the subject in the next few days. It's probably a good thing I wasn't in that room today.
  21. What took you guys so long to find this one?
  22. Lineups Phils Rollins, SS Victorino, CF Utley, 2B Howard, 1B Burrell, LF Dellucci, RF Lieberthal, C Nunez, 3B Myers, P Cubs Pierre, CF Bynum, 2B Ramirez, 3B Jones, RF Barrett, C Mabry, 1B Murton, LF Cedeno, SS Guzman, P
  23. Any hints from Baker on how he'll play the middle infield with Izturis down ? Cedeno at 2nd when Coats is at SS, Cedeno at SS when Theriot is at 2nd ? Any chance Fast Freddie steals time at 2nd ? Probably Cedeno at SS every day and a platoon of Theriot and Freddie at second. Spot duty in the outfield for ol' Buck.
  24. Lineups Phillies Victorino, CF Sandoval, 2B Rollins, SS Howard, 1B Burrell, LF Lieberthal, C Dellucci, RF Nunez, 3B Moyer, P Cubs Pierre, CF Theriot, 2B Ramirez, 3B Nevin, 1B Jones, RF Murton, LF Blanco, C Cedeno, SS O'Malley, P
