  1. Correct. Sarcasm, right? You do realize speed doesn't mean jack crap at the top of the lineup, right? As a matter of fact, our attempts at stealing this year have actually cost us -3.52 runs according to EqSBR on BP. Murton's OBP is far more important than any amount of speed could be. Actually, according to studies by Bill James, batting order as a whole makes little or no difference. As long as you don't bat your worst hitters at the top or middle of the order you can mix the other players around randomly and the total runs created comes out almost exactly the same.
  2. OMG!! The Cubs are down by 3 runs in the 5th inning!?! This game is over, and probably the season too!! This team is the worst ever!! Honestly, it's like some people have never watched a baseball game before, much less an entire season.
  3. Cobb got a hit 36% of the times he stepped to the plate during his career. Even the best home run hitters of all time only get a home run in 1 of every 11-12 AB's. If he didn't have a home run stroke to begin with, how can you fault a guy for not trying to hit home runs when he's able to get a hit so frequently. I wish the Cubs had a guy who could hit .370 and steal 60 bases. but if he COULD hit HR's and chose not to, that's bad baseball That's why Dave Kingman was the smartest player that ever lived, right? He knew he could hit HR's and the best result of any at bat is a HR so he just swung for the fences every time up.
  4. Ohman has appeared in 46 games and Howry in 52 games this year. If one were to assume your ten game estimate that they have blown for the Cubs is correct then that means that they have failed in about 10% of their appearances. How many out of 100 appearances would you assume that the average reliever would blow? BTW - the ESPN stat site shows Ohman has no blown saves this year and Howry has 4 so maybe you are overstating their impact a bit. It means that there were probably games they sucked in that you blame the loss on them when there is a fair chance the team would have lost anyway.
  5. Piggy, Cherry, Rapada, and Marmol will be fixtures in our BP for years to come. disagree. Marmol probably, the others I doubt it. I'm sure the advance scouts will take your prognostication into consideration. Are advance scouts the only ones allowed to give opinions about players on this board?
  6. What do you mean? the huge alley in right center. though right down the line it isn't as bad as the rest of the park with that crazy section of seats that juts out from the foul pole. If SD "Barry-proofed" Petco Park then did SF also "Barry-proof" PacBell? It is deeper to right center has the high wall in straight away RF.
  7. I am almost positive he is in the 2nd year of a 3 year deal.
  8. You mean higher mound. yeah, sorry
  9. That would definitely be worth the price of admission. You know I'm there. Adults-only game threads, I might shell out for that. if Tim made an adult-only section available for Premium subscribers I bet a ton more people would sign up Yeah, saying the "F" word makes for HILARIOUSLY great fun... when I was 14.
  10. Zup? http://img27.picoodle.com/img/img27/9/8/4/f_ruthm_dae597a.jpg 1921, age 26: .378 Batting Average, 59 Home Runs, 171 RBI, 177 Runs, .846 Slg. %, .512 OBP, 457 Total Bases, 44 Doubles, 16 Triples, 17 Stolen Bases, 145 BB, 1.359 OPS oh ya, I have a career ERA of 2.28 and WHIP of 1.16 in 148 games started. Stick Barry back in 1921 and, barring a hate-crime, he would put up numbers that would have had him burned at the stake for witchcraft. Back in 1921 he wouldn't have had the cream and the clear to assist his body recovery time, his lounge chair and plasma TV in the clubhouse or his body armor to protect him from inside pitches. Not to mention that the rules of the game back then were much more favorable to pitchers (lower mound, doctoring of baseballs allowed, etc). What Ruth did as a comparison to his peers is mindboggling, much more dominant than even Bonds has been to other current players.
  11. Blanco to the 60 day makes sense and then when (if?) he is finally ready they can DFA Hill since they won't want to be carrying 3 catchers on the active roster (especially since Hill has no value as a pinch hitter). I am not so sure about Murton going down when Ward comes back. He is hitting and Piniella has talked a lot about needing another RH bat. Hendry couldn't get one for him by trade so he has Murton by default. I would say that at the moment Cedeno is most at risk of going down when Ward comes back.
  12. If he can't even get the trade right then how much can I trust the rest of his info.
  13. Agreed, keep Riot as short. In the current rotation Fontenot is going to be more a bench player than a starter. With everyone healthy Floyd is the regular RF (with Murton and Pagan getting starts against most LH pitching) and DeRosa is the regular 2B. Fontenot would only be getting starts when DeRosa needs a day off or when Lou is compelled to start DeRosa in RF. This should be no more than a couple days a week total. I think that arrangement will keep Fontenot rested and at his most effective.
  14. I think the Cubs will activate Blanco and Wood at the same time this coming weekend and DFA Hill as the corresponding roster move to clear the room on the 40 man roster. I doubt any teams will be leaping at the chance to grab Hill so he probably will accept the assignment back to Iowa.
  15. I would guess that it would be the right handed option to Floyd in RF and/or Jones in CF. His splits against LH pitching look pretty good and the Cubs are definitely looking to improve in that area. I would say it wouldn't be too bad depending what they have to give up and how much salary Baltimore would take on.
  16. Blanco seems to be getting close to being ready as well, and I would think the combination of Kendall and Blanco would be just as good as Laird.
  17. I am so conditioned to root against them that I was actually concerned about them having a runner at 3rd with one out and Pujols at the plate. It took me a minute to realize that I should actually be hoping that they do score the run.
  18. In all fairness, Lou hasn't given him much of a chance to work off the rust since coming back. Two appearances in a week and the last one was 4 days ago.
  19. I think it was the brilliant Kevin Kennedy earlier today that said Sori would be "very lucky" to reach 35 HR & 70 RBI.. Soriano carried the Cubs for a stretch there so it can be argued whether his production is worth the salary but it would be hard to make a case that the Cubs would be still in the race without him. Hendry and management said in the offseason that their goal was to win now and Soriano has helped make that possible.
  20. His AVG has skyrocketed to .226! Looks pretty darn healthy compared to Hill's .173.
  21. That's all I'm implying as well... If the game is on the line, then bring him in..not w/ a 5 run lead. Just my opinion. yeah and if they put eyre or petrick in and griffey puts one out, then all of a sudden it's 6-4 and it does matter truf, you cant pitch him everyday either, at some point you need to pitch everyone. he had pitched to two batters in the past six days Lou needed to use his best pitchers to close out this game and stop the losing streak at two. If he messed around and let the Reds back in this and the bullpen eventually blew the game it would be a real bad loss.
  22. Just got in and was very please when I checked the score. After reading the game thread yesterday after the loss I was almost convinced this was an automatic loss the way people were talking about Harang like he was unbeatable and just hoping to avoid a sweep.
  23. I haven't seen a specific timeframe, but he is out on a rehab assignment now (Peoria, I believe). There's a limit to how long they can keep him out on a rehab assignment though... the way things are going would anyone be surprised if the Cubs DFA'd Kendall and activated Blanco in a few days? I will be very disappointed if they get rid of Hill just to keep Kendall. Maybe Kendall will end up on a DL stint of his own.... How could you be disappointed with them getting rid of Hill to keep ANYONE? Having seen pathetic offensive catchers such as Rich Wrona, Tim Blackwell, and Paul Bako in my days I thought it could not get any worse. Now I have been treated to the Koyie Hill experience this year and know I was wrong.
